Backstory

In the Montes Promotorium mountain range in the far north dwells a nomadic tribe of lizard-like creatures. Even though the conditions are harsh, the tribe has dwelled there for many years as it provides excellent protection from the outer world.

Laciles was born as the son of a high priest, one of the most important people in the tribe. At first sight, Laciles seemed like a regular child: playful, full of questions and causing trouble from time to time. However, as the years passed Laciles became more and more reserved and he distanced himself from others. Laciles felt most comfortable when he was all alone in the vast forests that stretch out over the mountain range.

On his nineteenth birthday, Laciles was sent away with seven others to become warriors. Laciles had to train for three years in very harsh conditions, however he was disciplined and determined. Laciles turned out to be the best assassin his superiors had ever seen as he never hesitated and did not show mercy, he had a true talent for killing.

When Laciles returned to his home, his own father did not recognise him, Laciles had changed. Laciles soon learned that almost everyone in the tribe kept their distance, however he did not understand why. Even though Laciles was never a threat towards his own people, it turned out that he potentially could be.

On the darkest of nights, the high council of the tribe held a meeting to decide about Laciles' fate. After many hours, even his own father agreed that Laciles had to disappear for good. The next morning, Laciles was summoned by the high council about an urgent matter: Laciles had been chosen to take part in the trials! The trials were the final stage into becoming a warrior, Laciles' greatest dream. He was to be brought far away from the place they lived and to survive under extreme conditions all by himself for three years! After this, if he succeeds, he would return gloriously to his home.

On the night of departure, his sister Irana came to visit Laciles in order to talk him out of it. "It is too dangerous Laciles. You might die!" "So what? I have to take this chance, Irana. At the moment I am only hated and despised. However, if I return that will all be over! They will respect me and see me as one of them." "Laciles you are already one of them! Besides, I care about you. You are supposed to be here, to protect me. Think of all the good times we had, please don't go!" "I care about you too Irana, but I have to do this! I will see eachother soon, the time will pass quickly, I promise.." As Laciles spoke his last words he walked out of the house in order to depart.

Laciles survived on his own for a very long time under the most extreme circumstances. On a day while he was hunting, he was caught off guard by a viscious blizzard! His vision was limited and he lost all sense of direction. Laciles dealed with these situations in the past but this seemed to be different. The many days of exhaustion and the little amount of nutrients had weakened him. He immediately realized he was truly in grave danger, he had to find a place to stay! With the temperature dropping rapidly he felt he was running out of time. After walking around for hours through the knee-high layer of snow he knew was about to faint, when he suddenly saw a small shimmering light not far away from him; it kept him going. Laciles jogged in the direction of the green-blueish light. There was, however, something odd about this light: it seemed to be in motion! The light guided him towards a cave, at last he had made it to a safe haven!

Laciles covered a part of the entrance with rocks to protect him from the blizzard, also he put down his lumber in order to create a campfire. The light was located at the other end of the cave, suddenly it spoke: "Are you alright?" Laciles was startled but he was too weak to move. "How are you feeling?" "...g-g-good.." Laciles replied. "Tell me, what brings a warrior like you to the Gelu Tundra?" "I am supposed to survive here for three years in order to become a true warrior." "Ah I see, some sort of initiation perhaps?" "Yes that is right. Ehm.. don't mind me asking but who are you?" "I go by the name of Arcanus. Who might you be?" "I am Laciles. This may seem a rather odd question but what are you?" "I am a being of pure energy, I reside here for thousands of years collecting knowledge and I store all this knowledge in my library." "Pure ener.. Wait, knowledge? What kind of knowledge?" "All sorts, I desire to know everything!" "I see, but where exactly do you store it?" "In here..." Arcanus pointed to the far back of the cave and he said: "If you are feeling fit enough, I am willing to show you my Library." "I would be honoured." Laciles replied.

At the end of the cave turned out to be a massive door made of the hardest material Laciles had ever witnessed. The door was engraved with runes, ancient texts Laciles couldn't translate. Arcanus used his magic to open the gigantic door. Behind it was a huge open space that showed how truly big the library was. It had multiple floors, bridges, it looked if it was one big underground city all carved in the stone of the mountains. Arcanus showed Laciles around, about every section, bookshelf and showcase he spoke with great entusiasm. However then there was the moment Arcanus asked a question himself: "Do you not have questions about anything?" "No, I can't think of anything." Laciles replied. "I think there must at least be one question that is troubling you. Am I right?" Laciles thought deep and hard, he could think of something but he was not sure Arcanus would have an answer to that. Actually, Laciles was sure Arcanus could not provide him with an answer. "Well...?" asked Arcanus. "There is one question I have but I am almost sure that you cannot provide me with an answer." "Ask it, and let me decide what I can and what I cannot answer." replied Arcanus. "I deeply desire to know why my family, friends and people seem to hate me. They never accepted me as one of them. I want to know why." "Hmmm so I see... I am not sure, but I think I can provide you the answer to your question. Follow me, young warrior, follow me to the Temporal Pool!" and Arcanus departed, Laciles would follow.

They walked for about an hour through the underground library, Laciles was still speechless about how big it was. They walked though huge hallway with statues of certain warriors who seemed to be of the same race as Laciles, but before Laciles could ask anything Arcanus pointed at a giant round door at the end of the hallway. "We have arrived at the Temporal Pool! Are you sure about this?" asked Arcanus. "Yes, I am certain about this." said Laciles determined.

Once again Arcanus used his, seemingly powerful, magic to open the door. Behind it was a huge round room with a pool in the middle. Laciles went over to drink from it. "NO! Do not touch the pool!" shouted Arcanus. "Whats wrong?" "This is the Temporal Pool, do not touch it for you will dissolve into time itself." Laciles quickly stepped back from the pool. "Now, let us begin the ritual!"

Laciles was back in his hometown but everything seemed different somehow. "Am I back?" "Yes, from a certain point of view. We are back, ten years ago. No one will be able to see you, but you can see them." "I see, I'm not sure where I should start looking..." "You need to be quick, we cannot stay for long. For if we do, time itself will become unstable and eventually rip apart!" "Owkay.... Well we certainly don't want that to happen, right?" "Exactly! Is this the time period you are looking for?" "No, I'd like to go back to the moment when I arrived from my training." "And when will that be?" Laciles told him the date of his return and Arcanus took them there.

After investigating, Laciles found out why they hated him. "Have you found your answer?" asked Arcanus. "Yes, I have. I cannot believe they fear me..." "They fear you? Why do they fear you?" asked Arcanus, he seemed intrigued. "They see me as a threat to them, I never harmed anyone. I don't understand this." "I see but why would they consider you a threat? Is it because of your lack of empathy and compassion?" "How do you know that?" "I know a thing or two. Besides, I have never heard about such an initiation Laciles." "What do you mean?" "Your initiation, you had to survive on the Gelu Tundra. I have never heard of such an initiation." "Ehm me neither when I heard it, but warriors are not allowed to reveal anything about their trials." "Shall I take you to the moment before you heard about your initiation perhaps?" "Hmmm, yes let's do that."

After Laciles learned the terrible truth about his trial, he demanded Arcanus to return him. Arcanus did as Laciles pleased and they both returned to their own time. "They... they... wanted me to die! Even my own father!" Astonished and defeated, he left the room.

Laciles prepared for his departure. "Where are you headed? Your hometown?" "Yes. I shall give them a reason to fear me!" "Let me aid you in your quest for vengence." "You can help me? How?" "Well, I can guide you to your hometown. You said you did not know where to go, right?" "Lead the way then!"

Arcanus knew the entire area and he led Laciles back to his hometown. Laciles walked up to the two guards and killed them without hesitation! He roamed through town, looking for his father, anyone who would dare to stand in his way was slaughtered. Finally, he confronted his father who had not heard that his son had returned.

"Hello there." "Laciles! Ehm... I did not expect to see you so soon." he noticed the crimson blood dripping from Laciles' blade. "What have you done?" "I am fullfilling my destiny father." "What are you talking about? Why have you murdered those people? Your people!" "My people ceased to exist as soon as they wanted me dead!" "What are you talking about? No one wanted you dead." "This whole 'trial' was a trick. You all wanted me to die!" Laciles' father was speechless, how could his son know the truth? "Yes I know, I know all about it. About you and your council of treacherous monsters! But it doesn't matter anymore, they are all dead except for you!" Laciles was about to strike, but he felt a cold feeling in his neck, the cold feeling of a steel blade. "Drop you weapon!" demanded the, seemingly female, voice. She walked around Laciles until she faced him, Laciles recognised her. "Irana?! Is that you?" It took Irana a while to recognise her brother, when she did, she lowered her blade. "Laciles? You have returned!" she sounded happy. "Irana, watch out! He wants to kill me!" "Is that true Laciles? Did you murder all those people?" "Yes I did." said he calmly. "Why would you do such a thing?". Laciles explained her everything, she was astonished by what her father had done but she did not share Laciles' zeal for killing. She let Laciles decide their father's fate.

"You have got something that belongs to me!" said a voice from outside the house. The door smashed open and Arcanus entered the building. "Well done, Laciles. Only can you spare him a little longer? He has something that belongs to me!" "Sure, I wasn't planning on killing him anyway." everyone was surprised by Laciles' response.

Arcanus told the tale of a young warrior named Anrha who entered the Gelu Tundra in search of an artifact. Bringing the artifact home would make him an honourary member of the tribe. However, Arcanus managed to reach the artifact before Anrha could. "What is it that you seek in these outskirts of the world? They are so hostile and have nothing to offer to those who are mortal! Begone.. or perish!" "I'm here to claim the artifact you just took." "There are secrets that musn't be disturbed by the mortal beings that drift across this world." "Secrets? Oh no, you get me all wrong mighty Arcaneborn; I only require the artifact to complete my training." "Hmmm... an initation?" "Yes." After thinking for a while, Arcanus offered him a deal: "You may take the artifact home if you will hand it over ten years from now at the main gate of your city." "Sounds like a deal!" However, just before Anrha could walk away with the artifact Arcanus warned him: "If you do not honour the deal.. you will suffer the consequences!"

Exactly ten years after the agreement, Anrha was ready to take the artifact to Arcanus but before he could take it, it was gone. It turned out that the 6 year old Laciles took it out to play with it. Anrha ran for his life in search of his son, however fate did not smile at Anrha that day and the artifact fell into a deep and dark chasm... Fearing the consequences, Anrha never showed up at the meeting and three days later his wife died.

Laciles was astonished and shouted: "I bet you've always blamed me for the death of our mother!" "... yes.. yes I did." "Lead me to the chasm!" demanded Arcanus. "Will that bring my wife back? No!" "No it will not, but it'll prevent your daughter from dying!" Anrha lead Arcanus to the chasm and Laciles followed.

Laciles descended down the chasm in search of the artifact. Below in the utter darkness he heard water flowing violently. After a long and exhausting search, Laciles noticed something shimmering in the darkness: The Artifact! Laciles climbed back to the top and handed the artifact over to Arcanus. "Thank you for your services Laciles; you have served me well." Arcanus departed as soon as he received the artifact.

In this split-second Anrha rushed over to Laciles and pushed him into the chasm. Irana looked in horror as her brother tumbled down in darkness. "Do not look like that Irana, he was a traitor and a murderer. He is of no use to the tribe, only a threat, one that had to be eliminated." "He was my brother and I loved him! How can you condemn your own son to death? How can you blame him for mother's death?" The moment Anrha turned around Irana pierced his heart with her sword. While her father's lifeless body dropped on the ground, Laciles was carried away for hundreds of miles by the water.

He was found unconcious by two young humans: Mundra and Maya. They laid him down on the cart that they used to collect lumber in the snowy forest. Laciles woke up in bed days after the kids found him. The 17 year old Maya sat beside him. "So.. you finally decided to wake up huh?" "Ehm... yeah I guess so; where am I?" "You are in Mizu, the capital of Regnum Aqua."

Laciles did not remember anything but his name and where he was from. He forgot about all events that had happened in the past. Laciles embraced his new homeland quickly and he also learned about its problem: the invasion of the east! Under the banner of Shadûz; they had invaded these lands. Laciles did not hesitate and offered his sword and skill to the armies of Regnum Aqua.

"My sword answers to no one; except to those I hold dear."
