Lore

"Never question my loyalty. You will never know what I endure for it."
―Katarina

Driven by an intense killer instinct, Katarina uses her talents as an assassin for the glory of Noxus, and the continued elevation of her family. While her fervor drives her to ever-greater feats, it can sometimes lead her astray.

From childhood, Katarina displayed a natural gift for combat. As the daughter of a prominent Noxian general, many paths were open to her, but she rejected them all for the path of the blade. Rigorously trained by the finest assassins in Noxus, her father the best among them, it was not long before Katarina demanded her first assignment. The task they gave her was aggravatingly simple: assassinate a low-ranking Demacian officer. As she set to her work infiltrating the enemy camp, Katarina discovered an opportunity too tantalizing to pass by – the arrival of a Demacian General. Stalking him to his tent, she quietly dispatched his guards and slit his throat. Pleased with her impressive kill, she disappeared into the night. Katarina's elation faded the next day when her original objective, the Demacian officer, led his forces to ambush unprepared Noxian soldiers. Though the Noxians fought valiantly, they suffered heavy casualties. Furious at her mistake, Katarina set off to complete her original task. Returning to the camp, she spied her now heavily guarded target and realized a stealthy kill was no longer possible. Drawing her blades, Katarina swore the officer would die, no matter the cost. She leapt into battle, unleashing a whirlwind of steel. One by one blades flashed and guards fell, each strike bringing her one step closer to the officer. A final thrown dagger restored her honor. Bloody and bruised, Katarina barely escaped the Demacian forces, and returned to Noxus a changed woman. The scar she earned that night now serves as a constant reminder that she must never let passion interfere with duty.

Abilities

Voracity(passive)
Scoring a kill or assist will reduce all the cooldowns of Katarina's abilities by 15 seconds.

Bouncing Blades
ACTIVE: Katarina throws a dagger that bounces quickly from enemy to enemy, dealing magic damage and marking each enemy hit for 4 seconds. Bouncing Blades hits a total of 5 unique targets (4 bounces), each striking the closest next target. Each subsequent hit deals 10% less damage.

Striking a marked target with an ability or basic attack will consume the mark to deal additional magic damage.

Runes

Greater Marks of Magic Penetration
Since I always play Katarina AP it's great to have the Magic Penetration at both early and late game, it will reduce the effectiveness of your opponent's Magic Resist.
Greater Seals of Armor
I mainly pick these seals because mid players often harass with auto attacks, aside from that they also reduce the damage you receive from minions.
Greater Glyphs of Scaling Magic Resist
Scaling Magic Resist Glyphs give an advantage over flat Magic Resist Runes after level 6, since you hit 6 on mid in no-time, these will probably help a lot more in your lane, and most importantly; team fights.
Greater Quintessences of Ability Power
And of course we need some extra Ability Power, these Quints give you 15 AP from the start, so they're great for that extra early-game harassment.

Summoner spells

Flash is, in most cases, the best for every champion because it’s just to strong right now. You can engage fights, disengage fight, escape ganks, land good ganks with it most important you can get better placement in team fights. Overall just too good not to get (atm).
IgniteI take it just for the dmg bonus.

Some people take Exhaust for Katarina just for the slow so they can land all ultimate. That's not right because, katarina doesn’t need slow after her remake, because she can land 90% of her ult without slow.

Items

Abyssal works extremely well on Katarina because all of her skills have close range so she can benefit from Abyssal Scepter's debuff. +Of course the Magic Resist you get.

Rabadons Deathcap is a must buy for Katarina because all of her skills have Ability Power ratios and Deathcap provides the highest +Ability Power in the game. Buying it will increase your Bouncing Blade, Shunpo and Death Lotus damage substantially.

This is one of Katarina's core items, due to the awesome passive it provides. Use Zhonya's Hourglass if you get caught out of position in a team fight, or if you went in in a team fight and all your skills are on cooldown. Zhonya's Hourglass also allows you to initiate team fights and still be safe which is great if your team lacks initiation.

Gives you high damage output with the awesome passive, so you will be able to grab kills easily which will help you to snowball into victory.

Void staff will give you first-class damage output combined with Rabadon's Deathcap and it will also allow you to kill your opponents even if they have high magic resistance values.

Other Items

Get this if the opposing team has lots of crowd control abilities that can be removed by Quicksilver Sash. !!Keep in mind that knock ups or knock backs cannot be stopped using Quicksilver Sash.

If you have Guardian's Angel, and die, and your team mates kill someone while you are reviving your passive will proc and you will be able to cast all of your skills after you revive.

Sustain items

Buying health, spellvamp (and health regen) is not my style, I think going for the highest damage output under the lowest time is most important for a champion like Katarina. Because of that I won't write about sustain items.

Laning phase

As I said Katarina has the weakest base damage from all ability power mid champions that means that you can’t kill other ap mid champions unless you outplay them hard. So basically because of that you are force to play pasive in lane and just farm. There is nothing you can do (almost against all champions) before level 6 with Katarina you just have to deal with it. Try last hitting with your Bouncing Blades and Sinister Steel. Try not to take lots of harass from enemy mid laner, don’t go to close just to get 1 cs. After lvl 6 Katarina starts to shine, there is some lanes that you can just harass with ult, because it has really short cool down. For example: Karthus, Ryze these champion don’t have anything to interrupt your ultimate and after lvl 6 Katarina full combo deal more damage than theirs do basically you just throw your Bouncing Blades-> Shumpo-> Sinister Steel-> ult and that is you back off and after that he is forced to go back or after your Shunpo comes off cool down you can just flash-> Shunpo-> Bouncing Blades-> Sinister Steel-> Ignite and he is dead 100% (most of the time depending on situation) If you kill your enemy in lane once don’t let him come back to the game try zoning him out (not letting him to get cs) harassing him when you can. And if you die in lane don’t start to freak out most of the time if you died against your lane opponent with Katarina it’s over for you won’t take him 1v1 don’t even try just focus on farming over farm her take wraiths from your jungle, do everything just to get farm but play passive don’t die again, wait for your jungler to gank, try to kill her with your jungler. Let’s say he/she has 1/0/0 and 100 farm and you have 0/1/0 and 130 farm (she is losing in farm because she tried to harass you, didn’t took wraiths etc.). Just chill after you die :) Other thing I forgot to say is never ever use Shunpo in lane unless you know you can deal more damage than your opponent to you and make sure there is no enemy near lane, because in laning phase your Shunpo will be level 1 and level 1 Shunpo has 12 second cool down so basically if enemy jungler come you are screwed because you don’t have your escape spell.

Farming

Katarina is really strong in farming after her remake. She can just Bouncing Blades Sinister Steel and 5 minions are dead. She can easily kill wraiths camp because she has lots of AoE damage with her skills. After Katarina remake, riot buffed Bouncing Blades range so I would call it long range spell now and her Sinister Steel isn’t that bad too.
You may find little bit hard to last hit with Katarina's skills in first levels because of her low base damage, but with time you will get used to it.

Mid-game

The mid game is the part of the match where you start working towards objectives such as; kills, turrets, inhibitors, dragon and baron. All of these objectives will put your team on the lead, which should eventually win you the game. So in this state of the game it's not only important that you try to push your own lane, but also gank other lanes so you can help your teammates get a lead on their lane. After the first few objectives are either won or lost, team fights will start occurring.

Teamfights

In team fights your role is to take out ad or ap carry. NEVER go first as Katarina because enemy team will just eat you alive before you can make anything. Don't go right after your team (or enemy team) initiate because they will just cc your ult. Wait few second until they use all of their cc until their ad or ap carry will lose there positioning and than just burst it down.

Quotes

Katarina's old voiceovers were similar to the new ones but were angrier.

Katarina's old taunt used to be, "Remember, evil spelled backwards is live. No coincidence."

Katarina's old joke is a reference to her old voice actor, who mispronounced the term "Dance Macabre". The joke refers to the Danse Macabre, or "The Dance of Death," a medieval allegory on the "Universality of Death."

Katarina is one of the few champions that had their in-game voices changed; others include Anivia and Janna.

Katarina's quote "Why? Because I can." is a tribute to Shawn Michaels, famous WWE wrestler.

Relations

Katarina and Garen first fought during a war between Demacia and Noxus.

Katarina and Garen were the ones who stopped the inter-city brawl in Kalamanda.

According to Blitzcrank's "Fleshling Compatibility Service," a dating service made by Blitzcrank, Katarina and Garen make a perfect couple, but are not officially together. Fans have since been joking about their relationship.

Katarina once came to Demacia to protest about High Councilor Heywan Relivash's conspiracy in Kalamanda along with Jarvan IV. She was attacked but Garen defended her.

With her unreleased skin, she is revealed to be part of the Crimson Elite, along with Riven and Talon.

Katarina is the sister of Cassiopeia, making them one of five pairs of sibling champions. The other siblings champions include Kayle and Morgana, Garen and Lux, Nasus and Renekton, and Darius and Draven.

Katarina's Shunpo is possibly a reference to a fictional technique in the popular manga series Bleach. Its name is Japanese (written as 瞬步) and means "Flash Steps," indicating that the person can move between two spots in the blink of an eye.

Katarina was one of the champions chosen for the Noxian pool available during the Ionia vs. Noxus match. However, she was not one of the selected champions.

When Katarina was first released, her default skin was the one that is now labeled as her Mercenary skin. This also applied to her imagery on skill icons, which can still be viewed in-game. She later had her skin, her voiceovers, and her backstory reworked.

Katarina's dance references from the last dance scene in the movie Napoleon Dynamite.

It has since been changed; It still features the first part of the dance, but the later animation of the dance is now a punching motion with her knives that rapidly gains speed.
