[14.9] Nautilus, The Titan of the Depths [Full Guide]

By Foxirion
Introduction
Welcome, fellow Summoners! I am Foxirion, your guide to mastering Nautilus in the Support role. Join me as we dive into the depths of the ocean and command the tides with the Titan of the Depths by our side.
Nautilus's crowd control, tankiness, and engage potential make him a dominant force in the bot lane as a support. Whether you're peeling for your carries, engaging in teamfights, or setting up picks with your deadly hooks, Nautilus brings unmatched utility and disruption to the battlefield.
In this guide, I will share valuable insights on Nautilus's abilities, item builds, laning strategies, and playstyles tailored specifically for the Support role. From zoning enemies with your imposing presence to initiating fights with your ultimate's devastating impact, you'll learn how to control the pace of the game and lead your team to victory as the Titan of the Depths.
Join me on this journey as we navigate the waters of the bot lane with Nautilus as our anchor. Together, we will secure kills, protect our allies, and establish dominance in the support role, ensuring that our team emerges victorious in every skirmish and teamfight.
Abilities

Passive - Staggering Blow

Nautilus' basic attacks deal bonus physical damage and root his target briefly. This passive ability allows Nautilus to control enemies and set up his other abilities effectively, making him a potent crowd control tank in fights.

Q - Dredge Line

Nautilus hurls his anchor forward, pulling himself to the first enemy hit. Upon reaching the target, Nautilus deals damage, briefly stuns them, and temporarily gains bonus attack speed. This ability is crucial for Nautilus' engage, lockdown, and initiation in fights, allowing him to catch out priority targets or peel for his allies.

W - Titan's Wrath

Nautilus activates his shield, gaining a temporary shield that absorbs damage. While the shield holds, Nautilus' basic attacks deal damage over time to enemies around his target. This ability enhances Nautilus' survivability in fights, making him a durable frontline tank that can soak up damage and disrupt enemy formations.

E - Riptide

Nautilus slams the ground, causing the earth to ripple out in waves. Enemies hit by the waves take damage, are slowed, and are briefly knocked up if they are in the center of the effect. This ability provides Nautilus with strong area control, wave clear, and crowd control, allowing him to disrupt enemy movements and set up plays for his team.

R - Depth Charge

Nautilus sends a depth charge in a line, knocking up and stunning the first enemy champion it hits. The charge continues forward until it reaches its maximum range or hits an enemy champion, knocking them up as well. This ability is Nautilus' ultimate engage tool, allowing him to initiate fights, catch out key targets, and disrupt enemy formations with its powerful crowd control effects.
Runes

Resolve

Resolve

Grasp of the Undying

Grasp of the Undying is a fantastic rune for Nautilus. It synergizes well with his tanky playstyle, providing him with bonus health and adaptive damage every 4 seconds in combat. This allows Nautilus to trade effectively in the laning phase and become even tankier as the game progresses.

Aftershock

Aftershock is a core rune for Nautilus. It enhances his durability after initiating with his crowd control abilities. When Nautilus immobilizes an enemy, he gains bonus resistances and deals area of effect damage around him. This makes him extremely tanky in the middle of team fights and allows him to deal significant damage to multiple enemies.

Shield Bash

Shield Bash synergizes well with Nautilus' W ability, Titan's Wrath, which provides him with a shield. When Nautilus has a shield, Shield Bash grants him bonus armor and magic resist and causes his next basic attack to deal bonus adaptive damage. This enhances Nautilus' trading potential in the laning phase and his durability in team fights.

Conditioning

Conditioning is a good choice for Nautilus. After 12 minutes, it provides him with bonus armor and magic resist, and increases his total resistances by 5%. This enhances Nautilus' tankiness in the mid to late game, allowing him to soak up even more damage for his team.

Bone Plating

Bone Plating is a great rune for Nautilus. After taking damage from an enemy champion, the next three spells or attacks from the enemy champion deal less damage. This helps Nautilus to be more resilient in the early game trades and reduces the burst damage he takes from enemy combos.

Overgrowth

Overgrowth is a good rune for Nautilus. For every 8 minions or monsters that die near him, he gains additional maximum health. This allows Nautilus to become even tankier as the game progresses, enhancing his ability to act as a frontline for his team.

Revitalize

Revitalize enhances Nautilus' shield from his W ability, Titan's Wrath, and any healing he receives. It increases shields and healing by 5%, or by 10% if he is below 40% health. This increases Nautilus' overall survivability, especially in clutch situations where he is low on health.

Unflinching

Unflinching provides Nautilus with bonus tenacity and slow resistance for each summoner spell on cooldown, and additional tenacity and slow resistance if he is below 30% health. This allows Nautilus to resist crowd control effects and stick to his targets more effectively, especially in crucial team fights.

Precision

Precision

Triumph

Triumph is a great rune for Nautilus. It restores 12% of his missing health and grants an additional 20 gold every time he participates in a kill. This provides Nautilus with extra survivability in team fights and skirmishes, allowing him to stay in the fight longer and potentially turn the tide of battle.

Legend: Tenacity

Legend: Tenacity is a good choice for Nautilus. It grants him bonus tenacity for every Legend stack he has, up to a maximum of ten stacks. This allows Nautilus to resist crowd control effects, enabling him to move freely in team fights and use his abilities without interruption.

Domination

Domination

Cheap Shot

Cheap Shot is a useful rune for Nautilus. It deals bonus true damage to enemy champions who have impaired movement or actions. Since Nautilus has multiple crowd control abilities in his kit, he can trigger Cheap Shot regularly to deal additional damage.

Ultimate Hunter

Ultimate Hunter is a good rune for Nautilus. It reduces the cooldown of his ultimate ability, Depth Charge, for each unique enemy champion he has killed. This allows Nautilus to use his powerful ultimate more frequently in team fights, providing his team with valuable crowd control and engage potential.

Inspiration

Inspiration

Glacial Augment

Glacial Augment can be useful for Nautilus. Basic attacks slow enemies for a few seconds, which can enhance Nautilus' crowd control capabilities and make it easier for him to land his Q ability, Dredge Line. Additionally, slowing an enemy with an active item shoots a freeze ray through them, freezing the nearby ground and slowing all units inside.

Hextech Flashtraption

Hextech Flashtraption can provide Nautilus with some interesting playmaking potential. It allows him to use a Hexflash, a channeled blink, while his Flash is on cooldown. This can enable Nautilus to make unexpected engages or escapes when his Flash is not available.

Biscuit Delivery

Biscuit Delivery can help Nautilus with his mana issues in the early game. It provides him with a biscuit every 2 minutes until 6 minutes, restoring health and mana and increasing his maximum mana.

Cosmic Insight

Cosmic Insight is a good rune for Nautilus. It provides cooldown reduction for his abilities, summoner spells, and items, allowing him to use them more frequently. This enhances Nautilus' utility and crowd control capabilities, making him a more effective tank and initiator.
Spells

Flash

Flash is an essential spell for Nautilus. It provides instant mobility which can be used either defensively or offensively. Defensively, it can be used to escape dangerous situations or dodge crucial enemy abilities. Offensively, it can be used to engage onto enemies by combining it with Nautilus's Q (Dredge Line) for a surprise attack. It's almost always picked on Nautilus due to its versatility and playmaking potential.

Ignite

Ignite is a more aggressive spell choice for Nautilus. It provides extra damage and reduces healing effects on the target, which can be useful in securing kills during early game skirmishes. However, it's less common on Nautilus as he is usually played in a support or tank role where survivability and crowd control are more important than damage.

Exhaust

Exhaust is a great spell for Nautilus, especially when played as a support. It reduces the damage dealt by the targeted enemy and slows them, making it easier for Nautilus and his ADC to land their abilities and secure kills. It's also very useful in peeling for your ADC against high damage threats.

Heal

Heal is typically taken by the ADC, not Nautilus. It provides a health boost and a speed boost which can be crucial for survival in fights. However, if the ADC does not pick Heal and it's necessary for the lane matchup (for example, against high poke or burst lanes), Nautilus can take it. It's also useful in situations where the ADC takes a different spell like Barrier or Cleanse for specific matchup reasons.
