Champion Build Guide
Hello everyone and welcome to "My Viktor's Build" guide. I am EUNE League of Legends player and my name in game is Hektor Ulmer (not my real life name, it's just what I added). My rank in other account was Diamond III, but I can't really remember my old account name because I took a break from the game for a several years but I really don't mind that and now I created new account to play for fun and not to be the best player in the game. My favourite champion in game is Viktor. I play many roles but my best role is Mid and Top lane. From that being said, I am going to show you why Viktor is the best mage champion to play. If you don't wanna read my guide and if you are only interested on items, that is fine for me because I created this guide for any players who mains Viktor to get better in ranked or to play him just for fun. :) |
Mid Lane: Strong Difficulty to play: Hard Viktor is perhaps one of the best scaling mages in the game with crazy AOE damage, strong waveclear, great zone control and good mobility thanks to his Siphon Power from his passive Glorious Evolution once upgraded and he has one of the best ultimates Chaos Storm in teamfights. He also does great against almost any mid laners once you have purchase few items and upgraded first ability from passive Glorious Evolution and there is no way that enemy champion can do to you if you of course, didn't die early and if you are well farmed. From my experience, let me show you everything you need to know and how to play Viktor. |
Pros
+Strong waveclear once you upgraded your Death Ray +Crazy AOE damage with his Chaos Storm +Great zone control +Great at kiting +His ultimate Chaos Storm can interrupt channel abilities +Does absolute amazing job in teamfights +Very hard to destroy Viktor once he is fed +Becomes GOD in late game once he has full items +He has probably best dance in League Viktor has an insane late game scaling thanks to his passive, excellent waveclearing, burst damage, crowd control and it will be almost impossible to 1 vs 1 Viktor with full items and good mobility from his upgraded Siphon Power. He can almost 1 shot squishies from his Siphon Power, kite with Death Ray and can stop chanelling abilities with his Chaos Storm making him one of the bast teamfighting champions in the game. :) |
-Like all other mages, he is squishy -Weak early game -Bad waveclear before upgrade -Hard to play -Immobile, which he can be easily ganked -Weak when behind -Needs time to scale -Weak against assassins and gap closers -Players often ban him in draft modes :/ Unfortunately, Viktor has many weaknesses. He is squishy like other mages, weak in laning phases, can be easily ganked since Viktor is pretty immobile champion and has a low range abilities besides from his Death Ray. It is also quite hard to play with him. He also has some bad matchups against few assassins, gap closers and long range champions. :( |

This is my 2nd viable First Strike but with sustain:
And this is that I use against easy/fre matchups that they don't have any kill pressure on you and you can freely scale:
If you don't wanna use these runes, there are other options you can use as Viktor. I am going to show you some other viable runes: This is my Summon Aery Rune page Sorcery:
|
VS
|
So people are started to thinking which rune is best in Season 12 on Viktor. First Strike or Summon Aery? Some people think that Summon Aery is best right now due to the strong early game poke but some are thinking that First Strike is better because it's very good in the late game and gives you a gold based how much you have dealt damage on the enemy champions or some people are using Phase Rush or even Electrocute. So let's see what these 2 Rune Keystones that are very strong on Viktor do:
FIRST STRIKE
|
PASSIVE: Dealing damage or applying a crowd control effect to an enemy champion within the first 0.25 seconds of champion combat, grants 5 Gold 5 and First Strike for 3 seconds, causing all of your post-mitigation damage dealt against champions to deal 10% bonus true damage. Afterwards, you are granted (Melee 100% / Ranged 70%) of all bonus damage dealt within the duration as gold. First Strike will be placed on full cooldown after being struck by an enemy champion before you strike them. Cooldown: 25 - 15 (based on level) seconds |
SUMMON AERY
|
PASSIVE: Damaging basic attacks, abilities, item effects, and summoner spells against an enemy champion signal Aery to pounce at them over 0.45 seconds, dealing 10 − 40 (based on level) (+ 15% bonus AD) (+ 10% AP) Adaptive damage. Healing, shielding, or buffing an allied champion signals Aery to jump to them over 0.35 seconds, shielding them for 35 − 80 (based on level) (+ 40% bonus AD) (+ 25% AP) for 2 seconds. Aery applies her effects upon arrival. Aery then lingers on the target for a little less than 2 seconds before flying back to the user, and cannot be sent out again until she returns. Aery is initially very slow, but gradually accelerates, and can be picked up by moving near her. |
As you can see, these Rune Keystones do different damage. First Strike gives you 5 gold and begins to deal extra damage for 3 seconds after dealing damage or applying crowd control on the enemy champion. Once the 3 seconds have passed, you will receive a gold based how much you have dealt. Note that First Strike deals TRUE damage which is cool. It has a 15 seconds cooldown when you reach maximum lvl 18. This rune is pretty weak early but it gets stronger in mid and late game.
Summon Aery is a poke rune that deals bonus magic damage on the enemy champions when using basic attack, abilities, item effects or summoner spells as well. You can see her when she lingers the target and it will fly back to you. It's pretty slow but it moves faster and you can pick her back by moving near her. This rune is way stronger early than First Strike but it doesn't do much in the late game as you would expected. You can pretty much win trades against enemy champions early rather than First Strike. Unlike First Strike, it doesn't give any gold.
But what does First Strike makes so great for Viktor:
1. His Q Siphon Power can be used as an early tool for poking your enemy. Not necessarily for killing them but for farming extra gold.
2. Viktor will deal the most damage with his E Death Ray which is his main harass ability and this ability will give him the most gold.
3. If the opponents get way too close for comfort be sure to lock them in place with your W Gravity Field and unleash your abilities and watch how much you will gain gold while dealing damage.
4. All of his basic abilities can be upgraded or augmented each time he gets a kill and once you have all upgraded abilities, you will gain even much gold than before.
5. He is a scaling mage champion meaning First Strike is extremely good on scaling mages for late game or even some assassins.
Both of these Rune Keystones are very good on Viktor. You can choose First Strike for poking (not necessarily for killing them but for farming extra gold) and scaling into late game or Summon Aery for stronger early game poke and winning most of the trades especially if you have Ignite. What I choose? I choose First Strike for scaling and farming for gold because it's really cool and great Rune for Viktor and I think it's way better than Summon Aery. With my upgraded abilities and full build, I will one-shot almost everyone in the late game (not against tanks). From my experience, First Strike is a must try on Viktor until it gets nerfed and believe me, you won't be dissapointed. :)
You should start at lvl 1 with ability Siphon Power because you will begin to harras enemy champion in laning phase. With this ability, there is no other champions that can deal with you since you deal a nice amount of damage and you gain small shield that absorbs some damage. Then at lvl 2, you put a point into Death Ray since this is the main ability and you will be maximize this ability as soon as possible and then at lvl 3 Gravity Field. Death Ray is the main source of damage and poke, while Siphon Power is the second ability to max after Death Ray and finally the Gravity Field at last. Always put point at lvl 6, 11 and 16 Chaos Storm.
You can also put point at lvl 1 Death Ray if you are against ranged champions and you can clear first 3 minions easily or if the enemy team is going to invade so you can poke them and use in bushes if they are hiding.
In some matchups, you wanna put a point at lvl 2 Gravity Field if they have a gap closers let's say you are up against Tristana mid and she will use her Rocket Jump at lvl 2 to jump on you to deal damage and auto attack you and you can use your Gravity Field on her so you can escape. This will save your life to run away and preventing them for getting kill.
Starting Items:
DORAN'S RING A standard item for most of the mages. It gives you Aility Power, Health and a passive that restores mana when you damage and enemy champion. This is where I start in almost every single game and every player should start too. |
CORRUPTING POTION Another option to start that gives a lot of sustain. Since Viktor doesn't have any sustain abilities, it is good to trade early game against any enemy champions especialy against melee. If you combine together with Biscuit Delivery and Time Warp Tonic, it will give you tons of sustain so you will be able to stay in your lane for much longer which is awesome. |
DARK SEAL If you wanna to snowball or thinking that you have an easy opponent, you can go for this item since it gives you more Ability Power for each takedown and you can later upgrade to Mejai's Soulstealer. Obviously, you should start this only if you think you can really snowball hard or you can buy this Item when first recall. |
SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL If you are planning to rush early Lost Chapter and don't wanna waste your gold like Doran's Ring, then this is good start. Since Viktor has a bit mana problem early, this item will help you to spam your abilities a bit more. |
TEAR OF THE GODDESS If you are having with mana trouble early especially if you are facing against manaless champion, you can start with this item. It will help you to increase your mana and you can stay in your lane for much longer and spam a lot but please do not upgrade into Archangel's Staff because, it's not good anymore on Viktor as it only gives ability haste, not ability power anymore. Once you are almost full build, sell your Tear of the Goddess and buy something stronger. |
STEALTH WARD You must ALWAYS start with Stealth Ward. It reveals surrounding area so you can see on the map if the enemy junglers comes to gank you or if enemy mid laners goes roaming. Later after the enemy or your tower in mid lane is destroyed you can keep it or you can buy Farsight Alteration or Oracle Lens depending what the enemy team comp looks like. |
First Recall:
LOST CHAPTER You must get this item as soon as possible. This is very important item for every mages to upgrade into mythic item of their choices. |
SEEKER'S ARMGUARD If you are facing against AD assassins especially against harder matchups, then get it to survive their burst. Without that, you will be easily killed and they will start to snowball. |
VERDANT BARRIER If you are facing against AP burst, then this item will help you to survive. Later upgrade it into Banshee's Veil. |
CATALYST OF AEONS This item and Rod of Ages is back. It doesn't give you Ability Power but it gives you Health instead. Build this only if you are going for Rod of Ages. Don't build Lost Chapter together because Rod of Ages is also Mythic item and you won't be able to upgrade your Lost Chapter. |
OBLIVION ORB If you are against some champions that heals a lot, then you can buy this as a first item. I don't buy this before Mythic item even if I struggle. |
CONTROL WARD Buy this often when you are going to recall. It will help you to reveal location and invisible wards so you can clean them. This also reveals invisible champions such as Twitch. Put it in the bush near enemy red buff, players often don't see there. |
Mythic Items:
LUDEN'S TEMPEST If you are playing against a squishy enemy team, then this item is a must buy. If you combine together with Sorcerer's Shoes, Lich Bane and Shadowflame, you will completely delete one enemy champion if he of course doesn't have any magic resist. This Mythic Item is currently best right now on Viktor or any other mages for now so you should buy it if the enemy team doesn't have any bruisers or tanks. |
LIANDRY'S ANGUISH This item is good if the enemy team has a lot of bruisers or tanks. It's also effective against a champions that you are facing in laning phase such as Cho'Gath or Vladimir. This is by far the best scaling item on Viktor. |
CROWN OF THE SHATTERED QUEEN If you are facing against a burst champion or any assassins especially if you struggle a lot, then this Mythic Item will help you. Unlike Luden's Tempest, it's quite cheap, it gives you some defensive stats and has a passive that can make you to become safeguarded and gain 75% damage reduction and while safeguarded, you gain some AP. |
EVERFROST If the enemy team has a lot of gap closers and dashes, then this Mythic Item will defenitely help you. It's also effective against some matchups such as Irelia, Yasuo etc since they have almost infinite dashes. Since this Mythic Item has been nerfed (slow/root has been reduced from 1.5 to 1 seconds), I think it's still fine item to buy. |
ROD OF AGES Rod of Ages is back for beloved players! This item is currently strong right now. It gives you Ability Power, Health and Mana and each minute it increases your Ability Power, Health and Mana up to 10 times. After reaching max stacks, you will gain a level and it will improve your other passive that restores your Mana and Health upon taking damage from champions. This item is very good for many mages and AP bruisers but the downsides it slowly scales in late game. I still do not prefer to build on Viktor as he needs more Ability Power and Haste to deal more damage from his spells. Still, it's a very good Mythic item if you want to be more tanky in late game. |
Boots:
SORCERER'S SHOES My standard boots for almost every game. It gives you flat magic penetration which is good for early and mid game. |
IONIAN BOOTS OF LUCIDITY Quite good for CDR. With these boots, you will be able to spam your abilities a lot. Also, reduces your cooldown on your Summoner Spells. |
MERCURY'S TREADS If the enemy team has a lot of CC or that deals a lot of magic damage, then these boots are must to buy. I buy this when I am facing against Veigar to reduce his stun from his Event Horizon and against strong burst mage LeBlanc. |
Core Items:
SHADOWFLAME This item is very powerful on Viktor. It ignores 10-20 of the target's magic resistance depending how much health they have. Very good especially if they have a bruiser or tank or if they have a lot of shields. Combining together with Sorcerer's Shoes and Void Staff, you will do an insane damage and you can deal enough damage even if they are tanks. |
ZHONYA'S HOURGLASS Very good item especially if you are facing against AD champion especially if they are assassins. This item will save you a lot especially against some ultimates such as Fizz Chum the Waters or Zed's Death Mark. I buy this almost every single game to survive in teamfights and to counter some deadly ultimates. You should also buy it to survive any nasty situations. |
RABADON'S DEATHCAP Probably the most important and ultimate scaling late game item that every mage buys. The passive gives you a massive increase of Ability Power. Buy it after Mythic Item only if you are very fed and have enough gold, if not, then buy it as a 4th or 5th item. |
VOID STAFF Very good item for any mages. This Item will help you to ignore their Magic Resist as you will deal even more damage to bruisers or tanks. You can buy it earlier especially if you are against like Galio since he will build a lot of Magic Resist Items but you should buy this as a last item if the enemy team has Magic Resist Items. |
LICH BANE This item is amazing on Viktor. The spellblade passive works together with Siphon Power and with his empowering basic attack, he will deal massive damage or can completely one shot squishy champion. Buy this as a last item if the enemy team doesn't have any Magic Resist Items. |
Situational Items:
BANSHEE'S VEIL This item grants you a spell shield that blocks champions ability and it's very good against heavy AP team or against burst mages such as LeBlanc, Veigar etc. I buy this item when I am facing against Veigar to reduce his stun and survive his ridicilous burst in late game or if they have a lot of CC. |
MORELLONOMICON This item is good if their enemy has a lot of healings or if you are facing against healing champions such as Sylas, Vladimir etc. This item now gives Magic Penetration after some changes which makes this item even more stronger against healing champions. |
COSMIC DRIVE Gives you great Cooldown REduction, Ability Power and Movement Speed and a passive when you deal damage to enemy champions with basic attacks or abilities 3 times, you will gain bonus Movement Speed and AP. This Item no longer gives Health but it gives you much more AP than before and now it's really strong Item for Viktor especially if you have a Keystone Phase Rush. |
DEMONIC EMBRACE A good item against bruisers and tanks as you gain Ability Power equal to your health and dealing damage to enemy champions causes of them as maximum health. |
SERAPH'S EMBRACE This item has been changed and now it gives you Ability Power instead of Ability Haste based how much you have mana. It now has a new passive that gives you a shield when you are below 30% health. The more mana you have, the more shield you will gain. I think this item will be defenitely strong especially into tanky team and also against assassins that can save your lifes. I will try this item in the future games and let you know if this item is worth to buy on Viktor. |
HORIZON FOCUS Honestly, I haven't tried yet that item, but I think it's only good for long range mages who spams abilities from long distance. Your only long range is Death Ray but if you wanna try this item, then maybe it will be worth it. |
MEJAI'S SOULSTEALER An upgraded item from Dark Seal if you snowball really hard. Not reccommended to use in ranked games unless if you are very professional player. |
Elixir:
ELIXIR OF SORCERY If your build is full, then always buy Elixir of Sorcery. It is the best elixir for any mages. It gives your AP, Mana Regeneration and it has a passive that deals True Damage to the enemy champions and turrets. |
In this chapter, I am going to show you which Mythic items you should buy against enemy team comp. There are 4 types of Mythic items that Viktor can buy and they are currently the best. These are Luden's Tempest, Liandry's Torment, Crown of the Shattered Queen and Everfrost. Now I will discuss about these Mythic items first what they do then I will add which Mythic item you should buy into enemy team that I will randomly add:
|
1. Luden's Tempest This Mythic item is one of the most popular and best item for Viktor players. It gives very nice stats including Magic Penetration and has a passive that dealing damage with ability sends 3 bolts nearby enemies to deal damage and gratns you bonus Movement Speed. This synergies really well with your Siphon Power since it will give you even more Movement Speed. This Mythic item is great into squishy enemy team but pretty bad against tanky enemy team. |
|
2. Liandry's Anguish This is second best Mythic item for Viktor. Unlike Luden's Tempest, it doesn't give you Magic Penetration. Instead, it has a passive that dealing damage with abilitiy burns enemies based on max health over 4 seconds. It is perfect and deadly against bruiser or tank champion who will stack a lot of health. This Mythic item is best into tanky enemy team but pretty lame against squishy enemy team. |
|
3. Crown of the Shattered Queen This Mythic item is very good if you are against burst mage champion that deal insane amount of damage or against assassins that can take down squishies really well. It's way cheaper than Luden's Tempest and Liandry's Torment: it costs 2800 gold while these costs 3200 gold. It gives you 10 less Ability Power but it gives you health. It has a passive that you will become Safeguarded and gain 75% damage reduction, lingering for 1.5 seconds after taking champion damage. While Safeguarded, you gain Ability Power until it's destroyed. This Mythic item is great against a lot of burst or assassin champions. |
|
4. Everfrost This is quite unpopular but underrated Mythic item for Viktor players. It gives the same stats like Crown of the Shattered Queen. You can activate it to deal damage and slow all enemies who are hitted. Enemies who are hitted in center will be rooted for 1 second. This Mythic item is very good if you are against champions like Ekko, Yasuo, Yone etc. or if the enemy team has many dashes from other lanes. |
But wait, there is another Mythic item that has been removed for a long time ago and now it's back. And that is:
|
Rod of Ages This item is back and it's very good on scaling champions and for those who wants to be more tanky. It gives more Mana, more Health and Ability Power each minute. It's good on champions who has a huge mana problems in early game However, it is not truly good on Viktor since he needs Ability Haste in order to spam more abilities and doesn't have that mana problems in later stage of the game. That being said, I would recommended to build one of the 4 Mythic items above since they are rather much better for Viktor and I won't add Rod of Ages on which champions you are going to buy. |
Now that I esxplained Mythic items, I will show which of them you will use against enemy team comp as Viktor that I have added randomly:
1st example on your team vs enemy team:
If you look at their enemy team below, they have no tanks neither bruisers. They are completely squishy and they don't build health and resistences items. They can be easily bursted down or should I say oneshoted. Which Mythic item you should build. Of course Luden's Tempest is best against them.
Alright, so what about 2nd example:
Their enemy team has bruiser Darius and tanky support Alistar and other 3 champions are squishy. These 2 tanky champions can tank enough damage and can survive some burst. So which Mythic item you should buy. You can either buy Luden's Tempest if you need more damage and movement speed or Liandry's Torment for DoT damage against these 2 tanky champions. Both of them are good against them.
Now let's see about 3rd example:
Their enemy team comp is very tanky and it't seems hard to kill them once they get few items. They can survive much burst and they can stay alive for much longer. This is where you must buy Liandry's Torment to melt their health.
OK, so what about this 4th example:
Their enemy team has only 1 tank Malphite. So which Mythic item you are going to buy? Luden's Tempest right? The answer is no. You will buy Liandry's Torment. Why? Because you are facing Malzahar and he has Void Shift everytime it's up. Your Liandry's Torment can completely ruin his passive and he won't be able to gain protective shield faster. That's the reason.
Now let's see about this 5th example:
Their enemy team has a lot of burst and can delete squishy champions quickly. Pantheon, Elise and Qiyana, they have very strong early game and have an early advantage. This is where you must buy Crown of the Shattered Queen to survive their burst.
And finally, 6th example:
Look at their enemy team. They have a lot of mobility, dashes, they are hard to catch the and they can outplay you. This is where your team needs to have hard CC or slows in order to stop their mobility. As a Viktor player, you should consider buying Everfrost to either slow or root in center so you can burst them down so they won't escape or outplay you.
Early game, you can play aggressively or defensively depending on the lane match-up. Viktor at lvl 1 is one of the strongest mid laner in the game thanks to his Siphon Power which gives him small amount of shield and empowered basic attack which does great damage early. Still since you are weak early, your goal is to farm as much as possible for late game. If you are against easier ranged matchups, you should start with Doran's Ring since it's the most standard item for Viktor and it's currently strong right now. However, if you are against melee champions or harder ranged champions such as LeBlanc, you should start with Corrupting Potion and take rune Time Warp Tonic for sustain and trading power. Always ward early somewhere, you will probably getting ganked a lot since Viktor is very immobile and doesn't have any great escape abilities. Once you first recall, you should buy Lost Chapter as an important item to upgrade into mythic item or if you are against harder AD or AP champions, then consider buying Seeker's Armguard or Verdant Barrier to survive their burst. Your first upgrade with Death Ray should be around 10 minutes or less if you got takedown early thanks to your jungler or if you have managed to solo kill. With this, your waveclear will be much faster as before and push your enemy under their turret and you can either bully him or roam other lanes. After 15 minutes or more, you should complete your mythic item depending which enemy you were against and boots. With these items, your power will grow up much higher and you will start to outdamage your opponents if they are not ahead. |
This is where Viktor really shines now. You should still continue farm minions with Death Ray and start taking objectives like turrets, dragons or their enemy jungle camps. If you somehow fall behind do not worry, you can still comeback even if they are ahead because Viktor outscales most of the champions in mid lane. Try to clear the waves with your Death Ray and push other lanes but don't too much or the enemies will come and kill you. In the meantime, you should have completed at least 1 core item Rabadon's Deathcap or Void Staff depending how tanky or squishy their enemy team is. Once you have maxed Siphon Power, Death Ray and put lvl 2 at Chaos Storm, you will start to notice how different damage you deal then before. You can even kill squishy enemy if you are quickly enough with combo Death Ray, Chaos Storm and Siphon Power + empowered basic attack. Fights will happen a lot and you should group and work as a team to win this game. Make sure to always take down objectives such as dragons and place wards in bushes or near at dragon and baron. Viktor is great in teamfights with his AoE abilities and zone control but always make sure to not go first and stay far away and kite enemies. |
Now this is where it starts to change. This is where Viktor becomes monster in late game or should I say: God of Machines. You want to always grouping with your team in the stage of the game. You will be huge threat to the enemy team so you should always stay far as possible and not get killed. You also never want to solo split push alone because Viktor is immobile and you can get yourself killed. If you have a champion like Fiora, Sion, Tryndamere etc, they can split push solo due to having excellent dueling power in 1 vs 1 and escaping nasty situation so just let them do work and you stay with your team. In other words, you have AoE abilities so use them in teamfights wisely. In teeamfights, make sure to always stay backline and kite enemies with your abilities. Use your Gravity Field to CC the enemy frontline, so you can burst them fast wtih your teammates. You are a big threat thanks to your Siphon Power which also gives you movement speed and with your empowered basic attack, you will deal almost 50% HP to squishy champion. If you have a Lich Bane, it even becomes much deadlier than before that you don't even need to use Chaos Storm or even Death Ray. Your goal is to do as much damage as possible without dying, make sure you constantly spam Siphon Power to keep up your movement speed buff as much as possible so they will have a hard time to catch you. Do not forget that your Chaos Storm can interrupt chanelling abilites such as Katarina's Death Lotus or Nunu & Willump's Absolute Zero. It also deals massive AoE damage in late game and the closer you are, the faster it moves. Even if you die, it will still move. Use your Chaos Storm wisely. Make sure that the enemy champions are stunned by your Gravity Field or if you miss it totally, you are pretty much screwed. When playing any objectives, use your Gravity Field to zone off an entrance so they can't pass through and keep them busy kiting them with Death Ray so that your team can take baron, dragon or turrets. |
Viktor's Siphon Power can cancel your animation if you time it correctly. I have done many practice in the practice tool game a lot of times. It was hard a bit early but once you practice a lot it will become much easier for you. I found some video that will help you a lot so check it out if you want to.
And also, you can watch this video:
Don't always use Gravity Field or just for no reason. Use it when enemy is going to engage you or if they are CC'ed or if the enemy jumps on you, quickly use Gravity Field and activate Zhonya's Hourglass to survive. In teamfights, make sure to use Gravity Field where are the enemies are very close to each other so you can use full combo Death Ray and Chaos Storm.
Death Ray does not interrupt your movement so you can still use it while moving.
This is great when the enemy is chasing you and you can still poke them while moving.
One note that your laser also reveal some location such as bushes.
Do NOT forget that your Chaos Storm can interrupt any chanelling abilites. A lot of people forget about that and are confused why their ult stopped for no reason. Chaos Storm moves faster the closer you are but moves slower when you are far away. Also even when you die, it still moves so be sure to click on the enemy champion to with your R to follow them and problably kill them.
Farming
Farming is the most important thing in the game. You have to make sure to always last hit minions when they are close to death. Simply use your basic attack to last hit minions. When under your turret, make sure to wait for your turret to hit them before last hitting them. Don't always use your abilities to hit minions unless if you are going to clear them fast. Once you have upgraded your Death Ray, you can faster waveclearing. Always last hit Large Cannon minion as they give much gold and 5 of your Hex Core from passive.
What does freezing mean?
Freezing is a technique that lets you deny your opponent exp and cs. Freezing a lane means that you kite/tank the minions without letting your tower hit the creeps. Always make sure that enemy minions beats yours. If you are keep doing this, you are completely safe from ganks while your opponent will be afraid of ganks and will eventually lost a lot of exp and cs.
I do not recommended to freeze against harder matchups unless if you are very far ahead. If you want to freeze, make sure the enemy pushed you under the tower. In this way, enemy will be vulnerable to ganks. Freezing will force the enemy laner to overextend for farm and will keep you safe since you will be close to the turret. The downside is that you won't be applying any pressure, leaving your opponent free to roam. If you are very far ahead and you are freezing by not pushing, enemy will be in your kill range and he will loss a lot of exp and cs leaving him behind. This is a great way to snowball to lead unless if you have other objectives such as dragons, towers etc.
Warding in League of Legends is incredibly important for every role and every game you play. It is a necessity for everyone to know when to ward, where to ward and how to become better at warding.
Without any vision control, you will find it difficult to survive the early game, win the mid game and close out the late game. When you understand the fundamentals of warding and how you can use it to your advantage, it can really help you win more.
Every player has to start (unless if they play as a jungler) with Stealth Ward. This ward is very important to reveal small area around. You can either place it if you think the enemy team is going to invade or you can place it later once around 3 minutes. Once you have first recall, you should buy at least 1 or 2 Control Wards. This ward will always stay until it's destroyed and it will reveal any invicible units and Stealth Wards as well. I have added wards in this new Mobafire map and you can see notes by using your mouse on Ward Icons:
This is probably the best places you can put your wards. The more you will put the wards, the more vision score you will gain. After you have finished your lane, you can keep your Stealth Ward if you need more wards or you can replace it with Farsight Alteration to reveal small area from huge distance or with Oracle Lens if you wanna clear enemy wards or the enemy team has like Teemo to reveal his mushrooms. It's up to you.
Roaming is very impactful for a mid laner because it is the center lane on the map. You are always a threat to help out top or bot lane. Mid laners are also usually the closest to their jungler, and as such can make plays on the map together.
It is important to first tend to your minion wave before you roam. Ideally, you will get the minion wave pushed into the enemy turret and then look to roam. You can still roam if you clear the minion wave after the enemy mid clears theirs, but you will have lost tempo on your map movement.
You also need to be aware of the situation on the map you are moving toward. Your allies should have enough health and mana to support you in your gank. It is also helpful if your allies can communicate to you what summoner spells the enemies still have available.
You must be sure that you have a safe path to the lane you want to roam on. The enemy jungler can block your path if you do not have sufficient wards or information on the junglers whereabouts.
Every champion in Mid lane can roam even those who is immobile. As a Viktor player, he isn't the best chmpion at roaming. You can do it if you have pushed your wave and your Bot lane is being punished. Make sure that you are healthy enough and you have a lot of mana to use your abilities. If the enemy Bot lane is retreating and you are going to roam, that means they know you are going to help your Bot lane because the enemy player must have placed their wards somewhere. In other words, let me show you which way is the best to roam (I drawed this myself. The white is simple way to roam, the blue when you are on the blue side and the red when you are on the red side. It maybe looks it hard to see lines but that is how it is. Don't blame me for this. I thin I will draw better agains soon. XD):
White Lines: This is the simple way to roam. Going on the river and roaming either on Bot or Top way is the fastest way to roam.
Blue Lines: If you are on the blue side, there are some ways to roam. If you are planning to roam on Bot lane, you can do it by going on river, then heading near Blue buff on the red side and then going into bushes. Once you reach there and if the enemy Bot lane is near their tower, you can come to help your Bot lane to get the kills. If you are going on Top lane, first go to riven then go between the baron and Red buff on the red side and then go in the bushes. Be prepared if the enemy doesn't know you are there so you can help your Top laner to get the kill.
Red Lines: If you are on the red side, if you are going to roam on Bot lane, you can go between Red buff on the blue side and dragon and once you reach in the bushes, be quick to get there or else the enemy will retreat near the tower. Or if they are near their tower and they are low, you can try to get the kills. If going on Top lane, first go to the river and then go left where is there near blue buff on the blue side and then head to the bushes. Once you have reached there, if the enemy is completely low, help your Top laner to kill the enemy.
So everybody is asking what to do when your enemy is ahead and you are behind. Well, if you are behind, don't worry about it, the game isn't just over yet and it isn't so early to surrender. Keep your mental up. Playing from behind is something you got to learn. This extends to both in lane and out of lane gameplay. If your team is ahead and you're behind, then there is a high chance to win the game. For example, if Bot lane is very ahead and they have destroyed their enemy tower, they will likely to be fed and the enemy team will try hard to destroy them so just pray if they are good players. If you and all your team is behind, then there is a very little chance to comeback as it will be very hard to stop them unless if the enemy is completely throwing the game.
Your general focus should be on farming and avoiding fights. Also avoid roaming and utilize lane wards so you can warn your team when your opponent goes somewhere. Do not follow their roams. Even if you do get there in time, your impact will be severely limited due to being behind. Also, build defensive items to survive if you are behind. This will help you to prevent them to busrt you down quickly. It will not work every single game but at least it will give you a bit advantage.
As a main Viktor player, I also struggle often because I often get a bad jungler that plays poorly or if I am getting camped a lot by their enemy jungler. I still keep mental cool up and not arguing to my teammates and if my teammates are complete toxic, I completely mute them and keep focusing on game. This is what high elo players also do. Every player has a bad game or bad day so if you having problem with that, just take a break and forget about that situation. And besides, you cannot win every single game even if you are doing your best. Sometimes, the enemy team is just plays better than you so you just have to accept it. It's just a game.
Viktor does really well against many opponents in midlane but he struggles against assassins and gap closers but if you know how to play against assassins correctly, then you will have an easier time. So I am going to show you many matchups in midlane. Please keep in mind that some matchups are also quite rare and I will also add matchups that for example: sometimes, ADC from bot is in mid or sometimes, Support is in mid and goes AP. I will also add difficulties and things in matchups that you will see:
Difficulty: Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard or Very Hard
Recommended Runes: This will describe which runes you should use against champions. Some of the champions will have 2 or even more options but it's up to you which you will use
Which Summoner Spell you should use: This will describe what summoner spell you should use before the game starts
Which Item you should start: This will describe what item you should buy first when the game starts
Which Rune Keystone they use: This will describe which rune keystone are they using
Which Summoner Spell they use: This will describe which summoner spell are they using (I will not put Flash as a main summoner spell on matchups since everyone is using it so I will just add only what secondary summoner spell are they using). However, some players will use both summoner spells like Ignite and Teleport instead of Flash for killing pressure
Which Item do they start: This will describe which item have they started with
Recommended Mythic Item: This will show you what Mythic Item you should buy what champion you are facing in Mid Lane (you don't have to buy what is shows, you can buy any Mythic Item. It's up to you)
Their usual full build: This will describe what players have their full build when they have bought items (This is just in my opinion. Many players have their different full build what do they like or what is strong in the current meta)
I added a quick matchup tier list so you can see every champion what I added in each difficulty that there are in my opinion but every player have their opinions as well [some of these matchups are rare or very rare and possible to see in blind picks especially in draft or ranked games in low or high elo):
Now this will show you which recommended Keystone Runes you should use against enemy champions. This is my opinion which are the best against. Some champions have high long range abilities that can poke you from distance so you will use Arcane Comet, some champions have slow CC and/or you want to kite your enemy good and disengage, you will use Phase Rush, some champions can be easily punished or you want in general win your lane hard, you will use Summon Aery and the most used Keystune Rune for Viktor that you want to scale and gain much gold and you are very experienced player, then you will use First Strike. Honestly, you can use any Keystone Runes which one do you prefer:
Now, I wlll also show you what recommended Mythic Item you should buy when you are facing an enemy champion in Mid Lane (this list shows you what I think what Mythic Item is the best against. However, you can buy any Mythic Item, it's up to you. Or if the enemy team has a lot of tanks and you are facing a squishy champion, then you may buy Liandry's Torment or if they have a lot of dashes, then buy Everfrost. Honestly, it is really up to you which Mythic item you are going to buy):
Now, I will show matchups in alphabetic order from A to Z and explain how to win and survive every lane:
There are a lot of champions that works really well with Viktor but I a going to show you some champions in my opinion that are best in each lane.
Top Lane:
I like him in top lane. He is very strong in the early/mid game and has amazing knock up damage and a chain that can catch champions easily if they are caught by your Gravity Field. His ultimate gains movement speed and more attack damage and if he gets takedown, it will extended for several seconds. The downsides is that he doesn't scale well in late game but can still do well in teamfights. |
Another very strong top laner. Her ultimate can catch one champion and the targeted champion can't escape from through. Viktor can catch caught champion easily without problem. |
A huge beast with lot of CC that works really well with Viktor. If the enemy has stucked in your Gravity Field, he can easily knock them up, silence them and eat them. |
Very tanky and can chase the enemy team with his immunity against CC and also scales well in late game. |
His ultimate is global, it slows, allies gains movement speed inside and deals true damage in the center. His barrels can delete squishies in late game if he placed them correctly. |
With his ultimate in mega form if he manages to hit enemies on the wall, Viktor can easily unleash his combo with abilities. |
With his and Viktor's ultimate, it will be deadly and satisfying in teamifghts. The downsides is that he doesn't scale well in late game. |
If the enemy champions is caught by your Gravity Field, he can easily ult and knock them up which is fantastic. |
Very tanky, so much CC and scales well into late game. His passive can upgrade your Mythic item which is amazing. This giant will sure make you very happy in teamfights as well. |
He does an amazing job together with Viktor in teamfights. With his slow and damage over time ultimate, your Chaos Storm can easily catch and kill them. |
I love Shen. He has global ultimate, can save everyone and with your Gravity Field, he can easily taunt them. |
Very tanky in late game and has tons of CC. If he managed to stunned them, you can delete them with your combo. |
Vladimir top, Viktor mid, both scale well into late game and with your ultimates, it is just insane and terrifying damage. |
His knock up ultimate is really deadly in teamfights which he can cast twice and your Chaos Storm can follow them faster. |
If the enemy champions are caught by your Gravity Field, Yone can delete them with his ultimate. Also, Yone is a monster late game like Viktor. |
Jungle:
Almost every champion works perfect with Amumu and Viktor is no exception. With his ultimate, you can easily kill the enemy champions as quickly as possible. |
If she manages to ult few champions Viktor can take them down with his abilities. |
Very mobile, high damage, can stun champions if he and the enemies are inside the circle and can go back in time to heal thanks to his ultimate. |
His ultimate is very terrifying in teamfights and deals massive damage over time but he is quite squishy champion. |
A ranged jungler that works well with Viktor. If the enemy champions are stunned by your Gravity Field, he can use his Q and ultimate to deal high amount of damage. |
His ganks are extremely good and his ultimate can fear and deal damage to the champions as well. |
My favourite jungler. If he catches the enemy champions with his ultimate, Viktor can place under his circle Gravity Field and Chaos Storm which the result is amazing and fantastic. |
The most pupular jungler in the game and also very strong early/mid game with mobility and damage. |
Very tanky and also has very good ganks thanks to his abilities. If he is bush and he is chanelling ultimate without enemies being noticed, he can deal massive damage. |
So much CC and so tanky and yet very good in teamfights. With her a lot of slow ans stuns you can easily engage and kill the enemy champions. |
He can suppress the enemy champion and drag him with his ultimate and you can quickly kill him with your abilities. |
Very strong duelist, can invade and kill their junglers. can also turned them thanks to his passive and scales in every stages in the game. |
Very strong and very tanky jungler that has ton of CC and excels well in teamfights. |
Great ganks with his knock ups and yet very tanky. Also very fantastic in teamfights as well. |
Bottom lane:
Her ultimate has a stun the farther the arrow travels, the longer it will stun up to maximum at 3.5 seconds. |
An ADC bully that has impressive damage and with your Gravity Field while enemy champions is stunned, he can cast his ultimate to eliminate them. |
A poke ADC that is incredibely hard to catch him and if the enemy is stunned in your Gravity Field, he can surprise them with his ultimate. |
My favourite ADC. Has a root abilities and his ultimate has long range yet massice damage each 4 shot with his final shot is deadly. |
Just like Draven and Ezreal, she can surprise the enemy team with her ultimate. The lower they are, the more damage is dealt. |
Very strong ADC. Mobile, high damage and his ultimate is very effective with your Gravity Field. |
If the enemy team is caught by your Gravity Field, she can cast her ultimate and kill them. Simple is that. |
She is very scary in teamfights especially in close combat which she has a chance to make penta kill with her ultimate. |
His ultimate has a root ability that can snare each champion that they are close enough and you can eliminate them with your abilities. |
Since he is now more playbale in bot lane, they both work really well together. Both scale well in late game and their ultimates will destroy their entire enemy team. |
Support:
Has a knock up, knock back, very tanky and his ultimate reduces his damage. |
He pulls the enemy champion, knocks him up and he is pretty much dead. Nice. |
Nice CC and pretty tanky. Can block most of the abilities with his shield and his ultimate can knock them up. |
Amazing tanky support with a lot of CC. Can soak up a lot of damage before she dies and with her ultimate, you can easily cast your abilities. |
Very tanky support. His ultimate has almost half of the range or the map. Can root enemies quiet easily. |
Another amazing tanky support with a lot of CC. Can easily engage the enemies. |
A nice support with invisibility, can catch champions fairly easy and with his passive when takedown, you will gain extra gold. |
Heal, movement speed, CC, this champion will make you happy especially in teamfights as well. |
Like Blitzcrank, he can catch them and slow them very hard with his cages. |
Nice support. With his revive, you can live twice in row. |
Has a plants, root abilities and her knock up ultimate is very effective in teamfights which will make you happy. |
There are many OP or should I say: Broken champions that many players found them frustrating to beat them or they don't wanna face them in general. I am going to show you what recommended champions you should ban if you are playing going to play Viktor in mid lane:
This is probably the worst nightmare matchup for Viktor. She is still broken champion and a lot of people are crying and want her to get nerfed. She is almost impossible to counter her when you are playing as an immobile mage where you can't do almost nothing but begging for your jungler to help and hug the tower. I really don't understand why some players are playing her in mid lane. It's really disgrace. She is still top 5 most banned champions in the game. If you don't wanna face this cancer, then this champion deserves to be banned until she gets nerfed. |
You don't like this anti AP champion that counters a lot of mages, then this guy is also good ban. He scales like a monster in late game and can almost delete squishy champions and can escape easily with his ultimate. This champion is so easy to carry the game but if you are very proffesional player with Viktor, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to beat him in lane. |
This champion will definitely get you mad when you will play against him. He has many abilities that can outplay you and can destroy your entire team in late game. A lot players ban him because they hate him so much due to his wind wall, he has no sources (he is manaless) and many other things that I can't explain how I also hate him so much. Feel free to ban him if you don't wanna face him. |
Very unbalanced and very broken champion once he gets few items as he can almost any champions 1 vs 1 or even 1 vs 3. Like Yasuo, he is manaless and his abilities and basic attacks deals pshyical, magical and true damage which is ridicilous. Another good ban if you do not wanna face this champion. |
One of the most banned champion in the game. He can counter almost any champions in mid lane if he plays correctly and has very good roams. Despite being nerfed in many patches, the players are still banning him. The good things thought he doesn't scale well in late game because players will buy defensive items to counter him and he only builds damage items which makes him squishy champion. This is my personal ban (my other personal bans are Irelia and Yasuo) so ban this evil ninja if you don't wanna face him. |
There are some champions that are really bad against Viktor. Viktor is a control mage who can completely zone champions who needs to engage with Gravity Field and can kite pretty well with his Death Ray. Therefore you should consider avoid to pick or at least ban Viktor in draft modes or ranked games if you want to play with your favourite champions and you don't wanna face Viktor. That being said, I am going to show you some champion that are quite popular in Mid lane and I will explain each champion to avoid pick:
Annie is a burst mage champions that can delete squishy targets especially if she is ahead. She has a decent matchups in Mid lane but she struggles against long range champions such as Viktor. Annie cannot trade him well because Viktor can zone her with his Gravity Field and can kite her with Death Ray. He can negate some damage with his Siphon Power. He can also push quiet fast once he has upgraded his Death Ray and Annie has a huge problems with waveclear early due to her mana problems. If Viktor brings Cleanse in this matchup, he will remove her Pyromania and will negate her burst post 6. This is defenitely worth to avoid pick Annie or ban Viktor if you want to play with her. |
This matchup is an absolute nightmare for Cassiopeia. Cassiopeia does really well into most melee and short ranged champions which means if they try to trade her, she will cast her Noxious Blast to gain bonus movement speed and will non stop cast Twin Fang until it's dead. Her Miasma can also prevent dashes and blinks against champions like Sylas, Yasuo etc. However, she is very bad against long ranged champions and Viktor is one of them. He can keep his distance and spam his Death Ray to kite her and it's almost impossible to dodge it as she cannot buy boots early doe to her Serpentine Grace and can negate her DoT with Siphon Power. If she tries to engage on him, he will place his Gravity Field on her to stun her and will unleash her power with Chaos Storm and his other abilities and she will defenitely. This is highly recommended for [Cassiopeia]] players to permaban Viktor if you want to main her. |
He is an anti mage champion that can negate a lot of Magic damage and does really well against burst mages such as Annie, Fizz etc. However, he doesn't do well against some mages like Viktor. If he tries to dash on him, Viktor will place his Gravity Field on the ground, go back and keep poking him with Death Ray and keep doing the same thing. After Viktor has bought Liandry's Torment, Galio cannot lane against him anymore and will also be outscaled. This is where you should avoid pick Galio against Viktor. |
If I'm being honest, this is probably the hardest counter for Kayle in Mid lane against Viktor than any other mages. If Viktor goes Summon Aery with Scorch, he will go full aggressive against her and poke a lot. Kayle is extremely weak early game and she is melee pre 6 and she will suffer a lot against him if she goes for CS. A good Viktor will not give her any single CS not even under her tower. She will be forced to recall and then keep getting poked and over and over. Even after lvl 6 it's still very hard and once Viktor has bought Mythic item, there is nothing she can do against him. Since you both scale really well, Viktor can still deleter her with his combo if he is fast enough since Kayle is too squishy to survive his burst. If you want to play Kayle Mid, then consider banning Viktor or do NOT pick Kayle into Viktor at all. |
He is hard countered by Viktor. Kennen isn't good against control mages and Viktor is one of them. Viktor can stay behind minions to avoid his Thundering Shuriken and will poke him with Death Ray from distance. Kennen cannot engage on him due to his Gravity Field and if he gets caught, Viktor can quickly burst him down. He also scales much better than Kennen in late game. This is worth to avoid or ban Viktor if you are going to play Kennen Mid. |
This lane is a horrible for Lissandra. She is ashort ranged champion that does well against many assassins but she is very bad agains long ranged champions such as Viktor. Viktor will just keep distance from her and poke her with Death Ray and if she uses her Glacial Path to teleport, he will place Gravity Field on mark where she will teleport and if she gets stunned, she is defenitely dead by his burst combo. If you main Lissandra then it's highly recommended to ban or avoid pick her against Viktor. |
Viktor is one of the few mages that truly counters Malzahar. He has a shield from his Siphon Power that can negate his DoT, can poke him with Death Ray from distance]], can place his Gravity Field on him if he engages and his Chaos Storm can cancel his Nether Grasp. Once he has upgraded his Death Ray and gets Liandry's Torment, Malzahar cannot lane against him. If I main Malzahar, I would always permaban Viktor and you should too so if you didn't ban him and the Viktor player is very good, good luck on losing LP. |
Almost unplayable matchup for Neeko. Viktor outranges her and he will never let her approach him due to his Gravity Field and if she gets caught, she is 100% dead. He also outscales her in late game where she falls off really hard. Because Neeko is a short ranged champion and she is bad against control long ranged champions such as Viktor, you should consider banning Viktor if you want to main her. |
Pantheon is also countered by Viktor quite hard. He cannot jump on him because of his Gravity Field and Viktor can just keep pking him with Death Ray. He also hard outscales Pantheon in late game. The only to win this as Pantheon is early game before he has a chance to upgrade his Death Ray and buys Mythic item. If failed, then the game is over for Pantheon unless if his teammates are winning. This is also a good to avoid pick Pantheon against Viktor. |
Many players plays him in Mid lane and he has many good matchups if he plays correctly. He doesn't do well against control mages such as Viktor. If you try to fully engage on him, Viktor will place his Gravity Field and will harass you back before you can do anything and repeat on. Once Viktor has purchased Mythic item, Rumble cannot fight him anymore unless if he somehow gets lead. His Chaos Storm can move while his The Equalizer cannot move and he just scales much better than him in late game. This is a reason you should avoid pick Rumble into Viktor. |
It's Ryze. No need to explain. He has one of the lowest win rate in the game. I just added him because he is now a **** champion and nobody plays him anymore. |
Yea, you picked the worst designed champion in the game against Viktor where you have 0 kill pressure without jungler's help. She cannot kill him solo as he can just freely farm and kill her once he has completed Mythic item. He can just burst her down with no problem if he is fast enough. I would never picked Seraphine into Viktor matchup. It's just ridicilous and patheatic how she will get bullied so hard. |
Swain struggles against long ranged champions since he is a short ranged champion. Viktor will just kie Swain with Death Ray and if Swain pulled him, he will place his Gravity Field and keep poking you until you are dead. If Viktor rushes early Liandry's Torment and Oblivion Orb, he will completely outdamage and outheal him. This is why you should ban Viktor in draft modes as Swain main. |
Taliyah is sadly hard countered by Viktor. His trades are just better than her. He will poke you with Death Ray and even if you knocked him back, he will place his Gravity Field and burst you down. He also scales much better in late game. Avoid picking Taliyah into Viktor if you can. |
Vex is an anti dash champion that does really well against champions who has a lot of dashes or blinks such as LeBlanc, Yasuo, Yone etc. However, she is very bad against control mages especially against long ranged champions who doesn't have any dashes and Viktor is one of them. You can't trade him as he can easily avoid your spells and you can't avoid his Death Ray as he will outrange you. After he has bough Mythic item, the game is over for Vex. This is why many Vex don't ban Viktor and they picked her into Viktor matchups thinking that they can destroy him in lane and obviously, they got stomped so hard. |
No, Vladimir does NOT counter Viktor as many people think. Sure, you have infinite sustain against him but the problem is after Viktor has bought first item, he will completely outdamage him. Vladimir is also a short ranged champion and Viktor can just poke him from distance and his sustain won't be enough to stay in lane. If Viktor has bought Liandry's Torment and Oblivion Orb, there is nothing Vladimir can do against him as he will just kill him. If you are brave enough to face Viktor as Vladimir you can pick him but if you die to him, you will regreat it and you from now on permaban Viktor. |
Picking Zilean into Viktor? Excuse me? Zilean has only Time Bomb for damage. Viktor can easily avoid them and he can completely ignore old man and farm for late game. He also does way better in teamfights and can burst you down quickly enough before you can do anything. I would never pick Zilean into Viktor and neither you should too. |
If you wanna know how to counter Viktor while facing him, I found a video from Mobalytics that explains everything you need to know. Hopefully, it will help you out when playing against him!
And that's it. That's the end of the my guide. I hope this guide will help you a lot and make your games much better with Viktor. If you got any questions, feel free to ask me anything. Sorry if my English grammar is bad, I am not great at all and I do a lot of mistakes but it happens to everyone. Once again, thank you and maybe there will be more guides that I will create in the future.
I also created other guides as well so check it out if you wanna play with them:
