Hey everyone! I'm Doubtfull, a Challenger NA Jungler since Season 7. I have been playing Nunu & Willump since their rework and have probably played over a thousand games. I was the first challenger player to start playing the champion and have loved him ever since! The overwhelming majority of Nunu players take Phase Rush in every game, but you will see the occasional Aftershock here and there, so I thought I should include it. The reason we take Phase Rush is because of how incredibly hard it is to lock down Nunu after he triggers it in combination with his passive which makes him faster. Not only does it make it really difficult to kill Nunu, it also makes his ganks incredibly deadly. If you can proc phase rush you can run your targets down and land the root portion of your E Snowball Barrage. I take this every game.

Nunu will deal a lot of extra damage with this rune over the course of a game. He utilizes it very well as he has so many ways of cc'ing targets built into his kit. | MOVEMENT SPEED. The more MS you have before you cast your W Biggest Snowball Ever! the better. This increases your gank potential and allows you to move around the map at lightning speed. |
Sunfire Aegis This is going to be your Mythic item in every game on Nunu & Willump. The damage output that you get from sunfire will always outweigh the utility you can get from the other options. With this you can be a huge threat in team fights, and can also MELT neutral objectives. The ability haste that you get from your Mythic Passive is also pretty nice to have on Nunu. |
Dead Man's Plate If you have read rune portion of this guide, then you should know by now that we put a HIGH priority on movement speed. Deadman's plate gives you pretty incredible stats on top of a bunch of movement speed to empower your W Biggest Snowball Ever!. The item even comes with a bit of free damage when you first auto someone which is not to be underestimated. I build this 2nd virtually every game I'm playing against 2+ AD champions. . |
Thornmail This is probably Nunu's second best armor item. This is cheaper than Dead Man's Plate and gives 20 more armor. If your team needs Grievous Wounds and you're playing against a few auto attack reliant champions, this item can be a great option. It also dishes out a decent amount of damage which is always great for Nunu. |
Dark Seal I build this item every single game on Nunu & Willump. At the end of season 10 Riot buffed Nunu's AP ratios to be completely insane, and for the low cost of 350g Nunu can now get 65 AP. You are very hard to kill, and your passive Call of the Freljord allows you to get assists very easily. This makes getting and keeping stacks very easy. I only upgrade this to a Mejai's Soulstealer if I have completed my second item already and have 10 stacks. The 10% bonus movement speed that you get is REALLY nice for Nunu. |
Randuin's Omen I haven't been building this item too much recently, but it is another strong armor option for Nunu & Willump. It gives 80 armor which is DOUBLE what Dead Man's Plate gives, and can lower the AD and Crit damage of enemies around you for 4 seconds. I think if I was playing into a crit heavy team ( Yasuo, Tryndamere, etc.) I would definitely consider this over a Dead Man's Plate second. |
Spirit Visage Spirit visage was the go-to MR item for a long time on Nunu & Willump but it has some competition this season. I can still see myself building this if I have a team with a lot of healing/shielding on it ( Soraka, Janna, etc.). The increase to healing is nice, but this season I personally prefer the utility of Force of Nature. |
Abyssal Mask This is another strong MR item this season that tanks have in their arsenal. Abyssal Mask gives your entire time 10% more damage to targets that you immobilize. This means anyone that is knocked up by your W Biggest Snowball Ever! or anyone who is rooted by the second portion of your E Snowball Barrage. This item is also 200g cheaper than the other MR items, which makes it a strong choice if you want to empower your teams damage. |
Gargoyle Stoneplate I haven't personally tested this item too much on Nunu but the stats suggest that it is an extremely powerful option. 60 armor + 60 MR are huge numbers, and the shield that you receive from the item is incredibly powerful. If you buy this 3rd (after having bought some sort of HP item 2nd) I think you will have a lot of success. Use the shield after being low HP to bait the enemy team into thinking they can kill you. It will stall time for your Q Consume to come up for a huge heal, or to get off the full charge on your Ultimate Absolute Zero. |
Force of Nature This is my preferred MR item for Nunu & Willump in season 11. The base stats that it gives are pretty great, and Nunu uses the passive Movement Speed better than most tanks will. If you need an MR item I'd strongly suggest giving this one a shot! |
Demonic Embrace Sometimes you get really ahead on Nunu and can afford to build an AP item. Or perhaps your team is just lacking AP damage and you're against a few tanky champions. This is where Demonic Embrace comes in. This is the perfect item to give you a mix of tankiness and a ton of free damage from the burn passive. Don't forget that Nunu also has GREAT AP ratios, making this an all around strong option for him! |
Knight's Vow Sometimes, all of your hopes and dreams are in one champion's hands. If you are against a team comp that is going to be trying very hard to kill that champion, you might consider building Knight's Vow. It is a very cheap item and gives Nunu a nice chunk of HP, while helping out your carries tremendously. If your carry gets low, it even gives you a HUGE boost of movement speed when running towards them, which is always great for Nunu. |
Warmog's Armor I don't find myself building this item too often these days, but its always been really solid. Nunu & Willump have GREAT scaling with HP, so the more the merrier. If you combined this with Gargoyle Stoneplate or Randuin's Omen I could see it being VERY powerful. |
Perhaps the most confusing thing for more new Nunu & Willump players is how to do his clear. This is because you have to use his W Biggest Snowball Ever!, which can be kind of tricky. I have attached a video on how to do Nunu's clear, but I will write it out and text for those of you who prefer that.
You are almost always going to want to start on your Red Buff. Use Consume to clear this, and kite it backwards towards the brush. When it is dead you will immediately level up your W Biggest Snowball Ever! and guide it to the raptors. After 5 seconds your W will deal the maximum damage, so you'll know you're doing this correctly if it takes that long to reach them. Use your Passive Call of the Freljord and autos to clear the raptor camp. You should only have to auto each raptor once.
After you finish raptors, roll a snowball over to the wolves camp. Only focus on the big raptor, and by the time you auto him down to death your passive will be back up and will kill the small wolves. You will still only be level 2 after this. Roll over to your Blue buff and take that down next.
Now you will be level 3. From here you can roll and take your gromp, and by the time that is finished Scuttle should be spawning. Break the scuttle's shield with your W Biggest Snowball Ever! and finish it with auto attacks + Consume. Use smite if you're afraid of it getting stolen or you need to rush to a lane to gank!
After this you will be level 4 and your W Biggest Snowball Ever! should be up. If either lane near your is gankable, start your W cast ontop of the scuttle shrine for the additional movement speed boost and go for the gank. By the time you get to lane for the gank your E Snowball Barrage should be up and ready to follow up on your Snowball.

There is only one "combo" that you really need to know on Nunu & Willump, but it is very important that you do the spell rotation correctly!
You generally want to start out every fight with your W Biggest Snowball Ever!. It might take a few games to get used to the range and speed of this ability, but after that it is fairly simple. Roll your snowball for preferably 5+ seconds and knock up your target. Once they are in the air, you want to auto attack them and use yoour Q Consume. This will proc Phase Rush, and you will want to start pelting them with your E Snowball Barrage. If you land enough snowballs, the 2nd portion of your E will root them as long as you are close enough (a small circle will appear around you when casting E.)
Because of how fast you are moving from Phase Rush , its VERY easy to land this second part of your E Snowball Barrage. Assuming you are close enough, just before the target is about to be rooted you want to start casting your Ultimate Absolute Zero. This can ensure that they are rooted for the duration of your Ult charge up time and will take the full blast damage (which is massive).
That is pretty much it! League is a crazy game and you're going to need to be able to play situations by ear, but this combo is more or less how to get the most out of Nunu & Willump's kit!
