Bit late to reply, but if you're looking for a champ that can cover both top and mid lane, then Malphite could be a good choice.
He has a relatively weak early game so you usually have to play safe and farm near your tower.
But that isn't necessarily bad, since it can open more gank opportunities for your jungler.
Also, you would normally run Arcane Comet (rune) and use your Q to poke the enemy champ whenever they try to score CS.
Once you've built your first item or two, you can look to make more aggressive trades.
And don't forget, when you hit level 6 and unlock your Ultimate, you can use its knockup to help setup ganks for your jungler.

In general if you're a new player you should probably stick to champions that give you a desire to understand the game as a whole and to understand every match-up that you go into with the intention of learning those champions weaknesses and strengths.
Champions are always changing and metas are always shifting.
A good champion for learning the game and learning your boundaries and such is... TEEMO.
If you're still interested melee wise, Darius is a very popular choice as he is currently Meta and constantly getting buffs rather than nerfs through his items, general idea with him is stacking bleed then ulting people with a high sustain rate. Mid lane wise, Zed and Talon are the top contenders.
While your post has shifted from TOP/MID to ADC, I shall give my points above just in case you still wanted to know.
Kog'Maw isn't seen much in the role, mostly Samira, Ashe, Caitlyn, Lucian, Vayne & Jhin. If you were to play Kog'Maw, you do much better with a Lulu support as it compliments his overall AS playstyle going into super sonic overdrive with attack move enabled making it one disgusting AS champion.

The great thing about multitasking is that several things can go wrong at once.
