Whether you are a seasoned League veteran or a new player this is the right guide to learn about Viktor!
Why Should You Trust This Guide?
I was Plat 1 who has played over 100 games of Viktor in Season 5. Currently Gold 3 in Season 6. This means that I have 2 years of experience with this Champion, I've played every matchup and versed mid to high elo players. My win-rate for Viktor is 67.8% out of 106 games with a KDA of 3.66
There are many reasons as to why I love playing Viktor and these reasons make him a great Champion to pick up and learn. I will go over and explain the key reasons below. The first and main reason for me is because of how unique his abilities are. There are none like it in League of Legends. Viktor has one of the most fun and unique kits in the game which involve high burst combos and devastating AOE spells. He has all the essentials to a mage however he can also act as an Assassin due to the quick one shotting burst combo. The second reason is Viktor is a freakin robot! His lore and background make his character come to life. I strongly suggest reading about the Lore of Viktor |

Negatives
|
+ Lack of Mobility + High Use of Mana + Squishy (low total hp) + Missing skills can hurt + CC Vulnerable |
Viktor's Weaknesses
Even though
Viktor can output a lot of damage very fast, players will often find being out of mana very fast (however this problem disappears thanks to Perfect Hex Core). CC is extremely effective to Viktor as he is squishy and will die quickly.

Mastery Explanations

Ferocity TREE
Tier 1 // Fury vs Sorcery This is quite easy here. As Viktor you don't have any trouble killing minions under turret therefore attack speed is pointless on him. He greatly benefits from the extra 2% ability damage that Sorcery offers. Tier 2 // Double Edged Sword vs Feast . This is more preference based. Double Edged gives you a nice damage increase at the cost of taking more damage. This mastery will be ideal in easier matchups as you will have the opportunity to do more damage. Feast is a sustain based Mastery and since Viktor can get harassed in the Early-Game it can be a very good choice. You basically get 20 Health every 25 seconds which may not seem like much, but it can add up. I take this mastery in poke based matchups ( Ahri, Brand and Lux) Tier 3 // Vampirism vs Natural Talent . Once again this is preference based. 2% lifesteal and Spell Vamp can be useful if you plan on staying in lane to save up for the Prototype Hex Core upgrades. On the other side you have 10 Attack Damage + 15 Ability Power which may not seem like much but I feel like it is stronger than a small heal. The extra Ability Power also works with the damage scaling of Thunderlord's Decree Tier 4 // Bounty Hunter vs Oppressor I feel like Oppressor would be the right choice here because of Viktor's Gravity Field. After multiple games of switching between the two I realised my damage output would benefit more from Oppressor. You should also remember that Viktor's W Slows enemies who past by it. OPPRESSOR WORKS ON SLOWED ENEMIES. Overall I believe these are the right Ferocity Masteries for Viktor for Update 5.24. I will update if any masteries change in the future updates. |

Cunning TREE
Tier 1 // Wanderer vs Savagery Savagery has worked wonders for me in my most recently games. Savagery grants 5 bonus damage to minions and monsters which helps last hitting minions under turret in the early stages of the game. This allows you to save your Mana and use it for poking instead. I also found that I got my Hex Core MK-1 earlier with Savagery on. Tier 2 // Runic Affinity vs Secret Stash vs Assassin This is another choice that is heavily based on preference. I prefer having a longer buff timer for my blue so I can spam my spells more often. Runic Affinity also applies to Baron Nashor!! Runic Affinity adds 18 seconds to red/blue buff and 27 seconds to Baron Buff! Assassin is also a good choice as it adds even more burst damage in a 1v1 situation but personally I enjoy the extra buff time. Tier 3 // Merciless vs Meditation Merciless seems to be the dominant choice over here. Viktor loves burst, and burst loves Merciless . Many have asked why I don't pick Meditation over Merciless because of the mana problems Viktor has and my reason is that I believe Perfect Hex Core addresses the mana problems. If players still struggle with Mana then I suggest going either Morellonomicon , Athene's Unholy Grail or Double/Triple Doran's Ring. Tier 4 // Bandit vs Dangerous Game Not really a choice here. Bandit is only used on support role and everyone else will take Dangerous Game . I love this mastery so much! It has saved my life so many times as well as giving me the opportunity to all in, in a 1v1 situation. Tier 5 // Precision vs Intelligence Both choices here are great! Precision will give you extra magic pen which results in slightly more damage. Intelligence gives you 5% extra CDR to start and increases the cap to 45%. Intelligence allows you to spam more abilities early and late. Tier 6 (Keystone) // Thunderlord's Decree The reason that I go with Decree is because it fits Viktor more so than Deathfire Touch does. Both Keystone Masteries are great, but Thunderlord’s Decree is simply better for Burst Mages. Decree works great with Viktor because he’s a burst Mage, but also has great poke with his Death Ray and so he can pull off some serious damage with it when Decree is up. Add Luden’s proc to the table and that 1 laser will chunk whoever it hits. I see so many people running Deathfire Touch on Viktor and boy does it trigger me. It was the reason that I started this guide in the first place. Well that does it for the masteries. Not really a tough choice between 18 Ferocity or 18 Cunning, But please if you do use Deathfire Touch on VIktor I heavily suggest you change to Thunderlord's Decree |
When it comes to runes for Viktor, or any Champion for the matter, it is generally a good idea to have multiple Rune pages because depending on matchups you will require different stats from your Runes. For example, a page that has Magic Resist will be no good against an AD Champion like Zed or Talon. Here I will show you 4 variants of Rune Pages that you should run for Viktor in Season 6.
Rune Page 1 (Standard)
This Rune page should look fairly normal for a Mid laner and it is the standard Rune Page I use when playing Viktor in Normals or in a comfortable matchup (check matchup section). This page includes the necessary offensive stats while having Magic resist for lane and HP for late game.
This Rune page should look fairly normal for a Mid laner and it is the standard Rune Page I use when playing Viktor in a comfortable or favourable matchup. Favourable matchups can be found in the 'Threats' section at the top or the 'Matchups Explained' section further in the guide but some examples of Champions that this page would be used against are: Ziggs, Nidalee, Lissandra, Karthus and Twisted Fate.
Rune Page 2 (AD Matchups)
This Rune page is what I use when playing against Zed or Talon. It gives increased CDR and Ability Power which allows more spamming of abilities whilst swapping Magic Resist for Armor and Scaling HP for Flat Armor
This rune page is the go-to page for when you have an AD matchup as Viktor. So if you are facing a Zed, Yasuo, Talon, or any other physical damage dealer you MUST take a page that has armor or else they will shred you. The only difference between this page and the standard page is the armor but there are a couple of alternate rune choices that have more of an impact vs an AD Champion.
Rune Page 3 (Season 6 45% CDR)
Not many people ran this page in the preseason however I feel like it's a strong alternative to the Standard Page. Taking Intelligence , Morellonomicon, Ionian Boots of Lucidity and these runes you'll have a strong offence. There were many ways of reaching 45% CDR on Viktor however I feel like this way is the easiest/fastest.
Rune Page 4 (Basic)
This is a Basic Rune Page for people that have limited Runes or Rune pages. This page can be used for any matchup as it has a bit of everything. Armor for the AD mid laners, Magic Resist for the AP Mid laners with some Magic Pen and AP.
These runes will work until you start saving IP for the other rune pages.
Note: You should purchase the rune pages in order if you do not currently have them.
Summoner Spell choices for Viktor are pretty straight forward and you have very limited choices. 99% of games you will always use the same Summoners. I will explain the main two, then two more that are situational and the only alternatives.
Flash
Flash is the most common summoner spell in League of Legends and the game probably wouldn't be the same without it. It is by far the most useful Summoner Spell in the game and it enables Viktor to close the gap between his prey.
The reason that Flash is so good on practically everyone is because it acts as a 'get out of jail free card'. There are so many sticky situations that Flash can get you out of, whether it is being ganked, being trapped by a wall, needing to get away from a Champion or preposition. Flash is also great for offensive uses, it enables you to chase someone down over a wall or to get close enough to use an ability on them. Flash can also be used to dodge skillshot abilities such as Final Spark, Mega Inferno Bomb and Rite of the Arcane.
Ignite
The second most important Summoner Spell for Viktor is Ignite. Ignite is the perfect spell for an Assassin or high damage Mage like Viktor due to the raw damage that it brings to the table. Ignite is true damage which means that it cuts straight through any resistances the target may have. It is a great extra ability to finish enemies off with and generally help win a fight. It also increases Viktor's ability to instantly kill someone as ignite does do a fair amount of damage. A level 6 Ignite does 170 damage, level 11 it does 270, and level 16 it does 370. Mid-Late-Game ignites can deal quite a large chunk of a Champions health bar. Another great benefit to Ignite is that it straight up halves all healing of the Ignited target, so if you Ignite someone like Nidalee, her Primal Surge will only heal for 50% of its total amount which can be quite huge in a fight.
For the item section I will describe what the item does for Viktor and why I have placed the item in this guide.

Perfect Hex Core is the 3rd and final upgrade of Prototype Hex Core which you receive from Glorious Evolution at Level 1. It upgrades all your abilities which includes your ult (detailed explanation here) and provides 180 AP + 450 Mana at Level 18. Description: Passive: +10 Ability Power and +25 Mana per level. |
Zhonya's Hourglass is another fantastic item on Viktor no matter who he is facing. The huge amount of Ability Power it gives makes Viktor a very scary threat once the item is completed, you will gain 135 Ability Power from just the Hourglass + bonus from Deathcap. It also provides a nice Armor boost for those annoying AD champs. The active is nearly essential for Viktor as it allows him to dodge an ability, negate any damage from Ignite or any DoT (damage over time) effects. It can also help you get extra damage off before dying, reposition in a teamfight or lose any focus on you. Description: 100 Ability Power, 45 Armor. UNIQUE Active: Places your champion into Stasis for 2.5 seconds, rendering your champion invulnerable and untargetable but unable to take any actions. 90 second cooldown. |
Again another staple on any AP Carry. It simply gives a massive boost of raw damage. *Tons of Damage* Description: 120 Ability Power. UNIQUE Passive: Increases Ability Power by 35%. |
