Hi, my name is Demonsedge, and I've been enjoying my time at League of Legends. I can't say enough about the game.

When I play top lane, Sett is my choice because I understand his kit and play style. Concerning his team setups and itemization, I will look more in-depth at Sett's options below as you read through the guide.

I hope you will enjoy the guide and be able to follow my tips and tricks to understand how Sett works optimally.

So let's kick things off in style with my guide on Sett - The Boss.

Sett - The Boss
Juggernaut , Top
Specialties: Damage, Durability, Survivability
Why choose Sett?:
- He is a simple champion to learn and pick up in the top lane while being fun to play.
- He frontlines well, with good engagement tools and crowd control, making his presence known for his team in lane/fights and when going for dragons and baron nashor .
- He has great potential to make plays, carry his team and be an excellent team fight asset.

I enjoy taking him on the rift when playing league matches, and I hope you will too.

Pros & Cons
+ Lane bully
+ Strong duelling potential
+ Can shred tanks
+ Strong split push
+ Good dive access
+ True damage scaling (grit)
- Difficult to disengage from fights
- Susceptible to constant poke
- Difficult into ranged champions
- Predictable play style
- Very cooldown reliant
- Kited very easily

Ability Rundown

Pit Grit

Sett's basic attacks alternate between his left and right punches. Sett's Right Punch is empowered, gaining bonus attack range (unless Knuckle Down is active), attacking at eight times the attack speed of the left one, and dealing bonus physical damage. His right punch scales nicely with on-hit items, so always maximize its effectiveness whenever possible.

Also regenerates health based on a % of Sett's missing health.

Knuckle Down
| Cooldown: 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 / 5 |

Once you activated, you empower his subsequent two basic attacks within 5 seconds, dealing additional auto attack damage plus % max health damage as physical damage to a target, while also triggering Pit Grit. It's your bread-and-butter ability when dealing with targets that build lots of health, you want to eliminate while also giving you a % movement speed boost for 1.5 seconds when trying to chase a target.

| Range: 725 | Width: 60 | Angle: 27° | Cast Time: 0.75 | Cost: 100% Current Grit | Cooldown: 18 / 16.5 / 15 / 13.5 / 12 |

Haymaker is Sett's signature ability. As you take damage from enemies in fights, you will build up grit, equal to half of his maximum health and decays by 30% after 4 seconds. When activated Sett creates a shield (equal to 100% stored grit), throwing a punch dealing true damage equal to a percent of the grit stored to enemies in the center. Enemies who are not in the center instead take physical damage.

- For the best results, make sure you are stacking a mixture of attack damage and health items alongside items/runes that boost shields, so you can maximize the damage output.

| Range: 450 | Width: 280 | Cast Time: 0.25 | Cooldown: 16 / 14.5 / 13 / 11.5 / 10 |

Facebreaker is your primary source of engagement pre-6 and can also be an excellent way to start fights. A perfect way to lockdown your target, dealing physical damage and slowing them. If you grab one enemy on either side, you will stun both targets for 1 second, which can lead to some good follow-up from all your other skills and help out your teammates. It is suitable to use this when the enemy is near minions or two champions are trying to box you in from two sides of the map zone.

The Show Stopper
| Range: 400 | Effect Radius: 600 | Cooldown: 120 / 100 / 80 |

With The Show Stopper, you grab an enemy and launch them into the air, dealing bonus attack damage plus a % of the captured enemy's bonus health as physical damage to surrounding enemies and slowing them. Timing this ability is essential because you can either deal massive damage to a squishy using their frontline tanks or use it on a squishier target to isolate them. With the high value, slow, this helps to stick to your target after the ability lands.

In this section, I will share some of the effective combos for Sett that are simple to understand and that you can apply while playing summoners rift (draft and ranked) games.

- - Auto - Auto -

- - Auto - - Auto - Auto -

- - - - Auto - Auto

Tips & Tricks:

Playing As Sett:
- Avoid spamming Haymaker too much in fights since it's an extra lifeline for you in combat, and you will be most vulnerable without it when looking to escape or retaliate.
- Can use Flash during the cast animation of Haymaker for increased pressure.
- When looking to stun someone with Facebreaker, ensure you have another enemy target ( minion , champion or jungle monster ).
- Facebreaker has great combo synergy with Haymaker, dealing extra damage after you stun them or pull them toward you.
- Ulting with The Show Stopper can be a good engagement tool when looking to start fights.

Game Plan as Sett

As Sett, it's crucial to have a solid understanding of the primary objectives for each game stage. Also, remember that hitting all your power spikes will be essential for your success. Keeping this in mind can make all the difference in your performance.

- Early game: In the game's early stages, your primary goal should be to gather as many minions as possible to earn both gold and experience. It will enable you to buy your essential items, giving you an edge over your opponent.

Another tactic is to deny your opponent access to gold and experience by setting up a freeze or trading with them.

Additionally, it's essential to keep an eye on the enemy jungle and ward off the area to prevent any unexpected attacks.

- Mid-game: During the mid-game, look to see if you can split push lanes while keeping a close eye on your team to see if they need assistance. You can also stay with your team and fight to secure objectives like Baron Nashor , Rift Herald , or Dragons .

- Late game: To achieve success in the late game as Sett, strategic decisions are essential. These can include pushing lanes, prioritizing objectives, or engaging in team fights, which can help open up the enemy nexus. It's important to be attentive and make intelligent moves, as even a single mistake during this phase can have significant consequences.

Things to consider:

In some games, you may get little assistance from your teammates during the lane phase (the top lane is known as an island to many); therefore, make sound decisions regarding when to push or freeze minion waves.

Before prioritizing objectives such as dragons or rift herald , consider the potential dangers of wandering around the map:
- How much could you gain/lose when roaming compared to staying in the lane?
- What are the risks to me?
- Will I get ahead from roaming, or will I need to catch up?

You have two significant choices after the laning phase: split push side lanes or group fight; this choice comes down to whether or not your team will need you for upcoming battles or skirmishes. Should a brawl break out when side laning/farming, determine if you'll need to assist or participate; however, if your involvement in the fight or objective securing might not change the outcome, it may be more beneficial to maintain pressure from your current location.

When split pushing, it is essential to exercise caution when collecting waves or jungle camps. Additionally, being aware of your opponent's location is crucial to avoid falling into an ambush.

To maximize your chances of victory as Sett, only engage with Knuckle Down, Haymaker, Facebreaker or The Show Stopper once your enemies are in a favourable position to apply the most significant damage output.

Summoner Spells

integral for Sett and should be a 100% pick in all your games. Also helpful if you get caught out in an awkward scenario after a rough engagement or team fight, you can Flash to safety or dodge a crucial ability easily.

An effective anti-heal option that also deals true damage to the enemy. An effective summoner spell for Sett that makes it easier for you or your team to secure a kill and begin to snowball the enemy.

Excellent when looking for quick returns to lane, reaching objectives faster/performing dives, or going to the enemy base for a cheeky back door play. At the 10 minute mark, it becomes unleashed Teleport, which is now usable on minions / turrets , wards (not Farsight Alteration wards), or any deployable objects ( Teemo's Noxious Trap, Jhin's, Captive Audience traps or Shaco's Jack In The Box). Before you consider channelling Teleport, ensure you won't affected by crowd control or enter a mob of enemies unprepared.

Grants % movement speed to help enter or attempt to exit a fight. It is efficient while fighting ranged foes or against champions; you'd need help running down. Excellent when paired with mobility items ( Dead Man's Plate or Force of Nature) that give you more chasing potential.

With the ability to avoid colliding with friendly minions, you can dodge a scary situation if you use Ghost to escape combat.
(Note: you can't walk through enemy minions with the active effect from Ghost).

Wards & Trinkets

Control Wards can be placed anywhere on the map, revealing and disabling enemy wards within a 900-unit radius. Control Wards function similarly to the Oracle Lens trinket displaying stealth & camouflaged based champions ( Twitch, Rengar, Evelynn and Kha'Zix) that approach them.

Farsight Alteration (available at level 9) is a good option for Sett since he can split push and roam well with his team, making this option very useful for him when looking to gather vision. Just remember, farsight wards are fragile, meaning they will die the instant they are spotted.

Oracle Lens is best picked on Sett when dealing with stealth champions who plant traps, such as Teemo, Shaco, & Nidalee. It's also beneficial against champions who use stealth to engage/disengage, like Twitch, Pyke, Wukong or Shaco.

Stealth Ward is the default trinket as Sett, revealing units within a target location for 90-120 (based on champion level) seconds. You get two charges that refresh every 240-120 seconds (based on champion level). So the max allowable Stealth Wards to place is three. Great when side laning/placing deep wards in enemy territory or getting vision on objectives ( baron nashor & dragons ).

Stats to Consider
- Health: This stat is essential in the grand scheme and is one of the most important stats on Sett. Look to increase this more often to have more durability in fights.

- Attack Damage: The next best stat to acquire for Sett. It scales with all your damaging abilities and gives you more power in fights.

- Attack Speed: It's an ok stat to have as Sett while in combat, but investing too much into it would only be wise if you can stay close to your target.

- Ability Haste: Useful stat when dealing more damage with Haymaker and your other skills. This stat is less prioritized when buying items than Sett.

- Life Steal: Can be good on Sett for a bit of sustain in combat. Very efficient when applied through auto attacks/on-hit item effects.

- Omni Vamp: Not a strong stat option for Sett as a combat stat when looking for healing. Since we have limited item options when looking for omni vamp ( Doran's Blade & Goredrinker), we only buy it occasionally on Sett.

- Armor/Magic Resistance: Effective on Sett for a small amount of durability, but it's not something you should buy unless you have a hard time fighting with the enemy.

- Movement Speed: Grab this stat only if you need to chase down targets or escape from combat, though less prioritized when compared with other stats listed above.

Which Boots & Why?
Berserker's Greaves > Attack Speed
Berserker's Greaves are an excellent option for Sett in matchups, where getting more punches will determine the fight's outcome. Provides consistent damage when dealing damage to objectives such as turrets / baron or dragons .

Boots of Swiftness > Slow Reduction
Grab these Boots when dealing with slows such as Ashe arrows or other movement impairing abilities that leave you vulnerable and make it hard to escape. Due to Sett's lack of dashes or ways to chase down his enemies, picking this option can solve that for you.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity > Ability Haste
In the games where you feel casting your abilities will do you more in team fights/or need the summoner spell haste to get Flash or any other spell you currently have sooner. Sett would thrive on this pair of Boots as a champion who doesn't use mana since you'll have your abilities up more often, allowing for more Haymaker activations to survive lethal damage.

Mercury's Treads > Magic Resistance & Tenacity
Mercury's Treads are fantastic due to their tenacity and magic resistance while also being good if the majority or whole enemy team you're facing is mainly magic damage heavy. Since Sett can't shrug off crowd control easily, this pair helps against pesky crowd-control-heavy champions that might inhibit your ability to damage/chase or escape from enemies.

Mercury's Treads are also great when combined with the runes ( Unflinching & Legend: Tenacity), items ( Sterak's Gage passive), or chemtech dragon 's that improve tenacity for even more resistance to crowd control effects.

Plated Steelcaps > Basic Attack Damage Reduction
Plated Steelcaps are fantastic for you; the damage reduction makes it easier to soak up damage for your backline & provides durability against attack damage compositions. Since most champions are auto-attack-heavy in the top lane, it's the preferred option unless you need another pair listed above.

Starter Items
If we take Doran's Blade, we do so to gain more attack damage for better autos and allow for more ability damage.
If we take Doran's Shield, we do this to have a little more durability and healing regen when looking to play safer.

Each of these starts can be very efficient and should depend on whom you are facing.

Core Items
If you play a more split-push play style, completing Hullbreaker can be optimal, granting you increased damage to champions/epic monsters and to turrets. While in the lane, you buff all or your nearby minion's durability.
Provides excellent value for Sett in the form of additional wave clear, sticking close to your target while still having plenty of duelling and skirmishing potential. A solid rush option in most games as Sett.
Sundered Sky is an excellent damage/sustain option for Sett. An excellent choice when fighting tanks /bruisers such as: Malphite, Gwen, Sion, Fiora, Kayn ( The Darkin Scythe: Rhaast, or Darius.

Just be mindful of any grievous wounds effects that could be applied to you:
- Abilities: Varus's Hail of Arrows, Katarina's Death Lotus, Kled's Beartrap on a Rope or Singed's Poison Trail under the effects of Insanity Potion).
- Summoner spells: Ignite.
- Items: Chempunk Chainsword, Morellonomicon, or Thornmail.

Gives you health and ability haste along with a nemesis passive that gives damage reduction towards a specific target and makes them have reduced tenacity while you are nearby. It is beneficial when playing against the champion who poses the biggest threat to you and your team.
It is an excellent option for Sett, providing us with the stats we want for our build and two passives we can get behind, making it a very potent item in case you need a little chase-down and some % armor reduction.
As Sett, Blade of the Ruined King can be incredibly useful on-hit option for early trading with other champions (ex: Fiora, Irelia, Sion or Darius. With each hit, you'll deal % current health damage and gain life steal. Additionally, on every 3rd hit, you'll steal movement speed. It pairs well with Knuckle Down, so consider adding it to your build.
Taking Chempunk Chainsword will give you attack damage/health, essential to increasing the scaling damage with Haymaker into the late game. An excellent grievous wounds option when duelling with champions such as Aatrox, Kayn ( The Darkin Scythe: Rhaast), or Gwen.
A great pickup on Sett. It is helpful when you need to chase down targets that use dashes or other forms of mobility to use as an escape. As you move, build up charges of bonus on-hit damage as physical damage when striking a target. Targets are then slowed by 50% for 1 second when you hit them at maximum momentum stacks.
With Death's Dance, store all the damage taken from all sources and begin to bleed over time as true damage. If you score a takedown while in combat, you will heal for a % of your bonus attack damage and stops the bleeding.
Very efficient if you're dealing with manyimmobilizing effects & some teams will have magic damage based abilities to go along with it. Additionally, this item can give sustained protection from burst damage champions like Brand, Morgana or Teemo, who have heavy dot damage-based play styles.
Using Heartsteel makes you exceptionally durable in team fights while also increasing the threshold of your Haymaker shielding. Allowing you to turn your health pool into a damaging tool against the enemy, making it an excellent buy with other health items (ex: Sterak's Gage, or Black Cleaver).
With Maw of Malmortius, you gain increased durability when duelling or fighting with magic damage champions. These can include Brand, LeBlanc, Vex, and Akali, who deal heavy damage from their combo rotations.
With Spear of Shojin Sett, can increase his uptime on Haymaker, improving his survivability and damage, making him a serious threat during team fights and duels with the enemy.
With Spirit Visage, you have a substantial purchase that synergizes with Sett. In addition, to the magic resist among other stats gained, increase the power of all healing and shielding strength, along with increasing Haymaker's damage.
It builds on two essential things we need for Sett health & attack damage. Offers extra attack damage and also provides a shield, additional tenacity & size—a healthy option for durability in tough matchups or when taking duels and skirmishes.
Offers grievous wounds for Sett when struck by on-hit basic attacks. Beneficial into auto attack heavy teams and healing-based champions/abilities or items that pose a threat.
Great when looking to apply pressure on the enemy, making it difficult for them to handle your minion waves. It deals on-hit damage based on a percentage of your max health to your target and also deals additional max health damage to enemies behind your initial target.
Trinity Force is stong pickup for Sett, gaining increased duelling and skirmishing potential. It's a solid choice for split-pushing sidelines.
Very impactful when playing Sett since it increases Haymaker's damage, & provides more late-game pressure/durability. Its passive will regenerate max health per second once you have acquired enough extra health through items or runes. The regeneration effect will only apply after not taking damage from minions or champions.
Taking Wit's End provides on-hit magic damage & movement speed, decent attack speed, and magic resistance. This item can also help if you are in a duel with champions like Kayle or Akali, where you might need some durability and still feel relevant.

The following keystone and minor rune choices are great for Sett and will complement him in combat. Always pay attention to the enemy team comp, plus your item builds when selecting your runes to get the most value in each game.

Keystone Runes:

- Lethal Tempo, paired with your Knuckle Down, makes you a threat. Attacking with q will add a stack to the keystone progress, and if you break the attack speed cap, it allows further chase down of your target with the extra melee attack range. Helpful when against champions such as Yasuo, Yone or Jax.

- Conqueror is the most optimal keystone for Sett since you do more damage (after stacking 12 times) in extended trades and are more likely to proc the healing effect it offers. In addition, going this route will allow for big plays as the game goes on compared to other keystones.

- When going as a bruiser/tank setup or just wanting to take short trades, Grasp of the Undying is the call. After 4 seconds in combat, attacking a champion will give Sett 7 max health, dealing magic damage based on 3.5% of your max health and healing for 3+1.2% of your max health. You will also have more turret pressure when paired with Overgrowth/ Demolish and the item Hullbreaker.

Precision Runes:

- Triumph allows you to sustain yourself after the fight earning a % of your max health + a % of your missing max health and additional gold with each kill or assist acquired. That might not seem like a lot at first, but it can add up quickly, allowing you to purchase necessary items faster.

- Legend: Alacrity will help you deal more damage with your auto attacks and allow more pressure in the laning phase.

- Legend: Tenacity gives you more resistance against crowd control effects applied to you from either champions or monsters. A fantastic option for Sett, helpful when dealing with many crowd control effects.

- Last Stand is a go-to option for Sett since it combines nicely with your strategy of using Haymaker when your health gets closer to 30% remaining. In most cases, Sett fights to the bitter end, which makes this rune perfect for his play style.

Resolve Runes:

- Demolish is a way to press lane faster with Sett when combining all the health items he builds. It gives you damage to turrets based on a % of your max health, making turret sieging simpler while also being effective when split pushing in side lanes or when creating lane pressure.

- Shield Bash will give you armor and magic resist anytime you get a shield from either abilities or items. When the temporary health disappears, you have 2 seconds to hit the enemy with an empowered auto attack (based on 8.5% of the last shield gained + 1.5% bonus health).

- Conditioning helps increase Sett's armor and magic resist by a flat amount and then additionally by a percent amount. This rune can be very helpful when you need extra survivability and late-game durability.

- Second Wind is into poke lanes or when you will be engaging in fights often since you regenerate 3 + 4% of your missing health over 10 seconds after taking damage from enemies. Works in tandem with Sett's Pit Grit when looking to restore more health after fights and skirmishes.

- When dealing with burst-heavy teams and you feel like getting more damage reduction, pick up Bone Plating. It will allow you to reduce the damage of the following three spells or basic attacks by 30-60, depending on your champion level, within a 1.5-second window (55 cooldown timer).

- Overgrowth helps Sett by offering three max health per 8 monster / minion deaths, then gaining 3.5% more max health at 120 minions absorbed. This rune works nicely with Haymaker to scale its damage throughout the game. Now while the health gained from this rune is minimal at best, every little bit counts and can make a difference later on.

- Revitalize increases your total heal and shield power in combat. Synergizes nicely with Haymaker, Sterak's Gage, & Spirit Visage, offering increased shielding, while also improving healing from items such as Blade of the Ruined King, & Goredrinker.

Note that base health regeneration effects won't increase due to Revitalize.

- Unflinching grants additional tenacity and slow resist, gaining increased effectiveness while under 30% max health, making it a very strong option for Sett in fights. You'll have even more resistance to crowd control effects when paired with Legend: Tenacity.

Sorcery Runes:

- Choosing Transcendence provides additional ability haste to use your skills more often (permanent at levels 5 & 8 while giving an extra 20% on all non-ultimate abilities per takedown from level 11 onward). Likewise, the added cooldown will allow Sett to have Haymaker up more often, providing more chances to escape dangerous situations or turn the tide of close encounters.

- Gathering Storm is effective for Sett by increasing your overall damage (autos and abilities) against targets every 10 minutes and scales indefinitely. In addition, the rune helps to scale the physical damage dealt by Haymaker, giving you improved grit punches in the lane.

Rune Shards

When deciding on what rune shards (whether offensive or defensive) to pick for Sett in each of your games, you have to factor in a few things in champion selection.

Offensive Shards

• Do I need extra attack speed? It helps to make farming easier.

• Do I need additional attack damage? We always take at least one adaptive damage shard for Sett, maybe two if needed.

• Do I require any ability haste? We don't mind this option; it gives us more chances to use Haymaker in the lane if needed.

Defensive Shards

• Do I require movement speed? A solid choice for additional kiting against skill shots or to chase down targets you are fighting.

• Do I require tenacity & slow resist? An ffective option for Sett with enemy team comps that have manyimmobilizing effects.

• Do I require more health? Choosing either the scaling or flat health shards is effective on Sett since it helps improve Haymaker's damage values while being a suitable option against mixed-damage team comps.

Always pay attention to the team compositions you are fighting when mixing and matching the rune shards listed above with your Boots and items. It's a sure way to improve your overall survivability in games.

There are many ways to build Sett, and hopefully, this guide made it easier for you to understand what abilities/items and runes work well together and how to make the most of his kit.

I hope you enjoyed this guide, and will refer this to your friends and fellow gamers looking for tips and tricks.
