Let me start by saying that I myself am not an active cho'gath player. I have played cho a couple of times to know how his mechanics work. I am also a Carry player. I play carries, to be specific: Melee DPS carries. Most of which are glass cannons.
With that being said, I belive that cho'gath is very psychological (he plays tricks with your mind). You see
Feast basically makes you bigger and gives you more health. Now when you get bigger you obviously attract quite alot of attention and people see your massive health bars and fear your monstrous face. It is because of this fact, that you are sometimes targeted, and you will be able to fill your role as a tank (because people think of you as a major threat).
Cho'gath is extreamly tanky, having a TON of health and depending on how you build him a ton of fortification with a bonus CC. He is very very very difficult to kill. He also has very weak damage. His
Rupture is usually easy to dodge, his skills arnt as good as they could potentially get... and well... look...
The way you counter cho'gath is simple: take out his squishies. off-tanks and then him, basically: leave him for last. He will not be a threat, his damage is waaay too low, he cannot taunt you, or properly stop you from killing the squishy glass cannons. THUS resulting in him being quite weak.
But dont get me wrong, if.... you manage to get into laaate game with cho'gath.. now by late game, I mean pretty damn late...40mins i guess... He is going to be a damn monster, countering him is still the same: focus the squishies then him. But he will reach a stage where he can solo your turrets or actually deal quite alot of damage with an Atma's....
Summary: Cho'gath requires a proper team, that is built around him to reach his maximum potential. He is overall a very weak tank, until around late game...however he is still easy to counter... kill squishies and build an item like Madred's Bloodrazor and he's done.... I prefer to play him as AP (atleast I can pull of 1k ruptures)... and well if you really like a champion, you should get them. It is normal that you play better with a champ you enjoy as opposed to a champ you dont like as much.

Cho'Gath is an extremely strong solo laner, with his passive giving him great staying power and his abilities being good for combos, disruption, and raw damage. In terms of a team fight, he's an intimidating tank, has two sources of disruption, and can do a burst of 1000 true damage on an opposing carry. So he's actually a really good tank, if you consider these.
However, he's not too good in a side lane because he relies on solo laning so much for the experience, the last-hits (for his passive procs), and the fact that it's just easier to solo lane with him than to dual.
In short, you're sacrificing a lane of solo experience on your tank when in reality, you could pick a tank that's on par with Cho'Gath and go bottom lane with him, saving top lane for a second carry.

I've played Cho a decent amount, and I have to say that if built right he can be a scary champion. I've fought a whole team by myself because all my carries died at a turret leading to our base trying to defend it. I sat there for a full minute fighting them off and dealing enough damage to get 3 of them below half health. That being said, compared to other tanks that are out there I find he isn't as viable as, say, Amumu who can put out some decent damage for a tank and has more CC than Cho'Gath!

Yeah, I think I'll buy him anyway. The 3k pricetag isn't too crazy if I don't like him. I love the flavor of a godzilla Violator too much to say no.
I understand that the abilities can be a little hit or miss. For the "solo lane" problem though, isn't jungling a good option for Cho anyway? I know it's an option but unsure how good of a jungler he is compared to others. If he is good, wouldn't that solve any issues of competing with carries for solo lanes?

Humm havnt seen many jungle cho'gaths around.... Dont think it would work that well, since you will be slow in the jungle..
I build Cho'gath like a mage, it works better when people have a brain and learn how to not fear the cho.

i dont like jungling cho, cus tehre are faster and stronger junglers (you can see cho coming from a mile away because his rupture is sooo easy to spot^^). Cho gath has his uses even in top elo (saw him in some clan fight vs solomid (i think it was CLG)). Play whatever you wanna play, but dont expect chogath to carry a game, the way a shen or a rammus (pre patch dont know post) can.

It's true he can't really carry that well compared to Rammus as a tank, but he is still pretty good in certain aspects. Though his rupture is very predictable and can be easily avoided, in team fights people aren't usually paying enough attention to him to really notice it. Thus, it can give a major advantage there. Plus you don't want to aim it were they are unless they're standing still, try to set the target area a little in front of a person's set path cause that almost always gets them. If you aim rupture where they are at that moment, odds are yeah it will miss.

Cho'Gath, however, stands out of the rest of the pack in my eyes, because he gets HUGE! I think that's really cool. But for some reason people keep telling me he's bad and I don't understand why. I was playing a game today and was having small talk with people including a Cho'Gath player and asked how he liked the champion and he said "he's bad but I just randomed him." Then I was watching a ranked Malphite tutorial on youtube and the narrator mentions in passing that Cho'Gath is bad.
What's the deal? What's wrong with this champion as a tank?
