What the heck is split pushing?
Split pushing is applying pressure on a secondary lane without the assistance of your team. It's most commonly done top lane. Split pushing is fairly simple to execute and creates a frustrating puzzle for the enemy to solve if done properly. You force your enemy into making potentially devastating decisions should they choose wrong. Usually, it creates a 4v4 team fight middle and a 1v1 top. If they are slow in reacting then they lose objectives. You can split push with teleport to make 4v5 plays elsewhere.
LEAGUE OF LEGENDS IS ALL ABOUT PRESSURE. Usually, the team that applies the most pressure wins.
Okay...so what should I keep in mind when I'm trying to split push?
I'm a split push fiend..especially when I play top. Basic split pushing is simple but mistakes can cost you serious objectives. Execution of split pushing is the easy part. The hard part is decision making. You want to have a plan for every situation before you find yourself in the situation.
Split pushing is greatly facilitated by proper ward coverage. You use wards to help yourself make informed decisions.
Evaluate whether split pushing is advantageous for your team. If you're a Kennen vs a trundle (random champs to convey a point) there's no way you should consider split pushing. If you bring more to a team fight than the champion that will neutralize you then don't split push.
SUPER BIG KEY #1: Dont split push if they got a head start (if they're closer to your base than you are to theirs). They will just kill your objective before you have a chance to threaten theirs. You need to be in a sort of limbo state where you're safe if they come for you or if they push you can punish them with a free objective. Ideally they will have a weak sieging team and you will have strong wave clear. This makes them have a tougher time threatening your base. A lot of times they'll do some really ****ty hard engage and lose 4v5. Ideally, they won't have super hard engage either.
You should be able to 1v1 or out move or out sustain the champ they send to defend you. Have a plan for how you will skirmish. You should have a plan to escape at all times.
If you're definitely dying....stall as long as possible and as far away from objectives as possible (aka run for their base!).
If you're a high mobility champ wait for them to send one to neutralize you and then go force an open field 5v4. This is especially true if you have teleport. You can also do this to secure objectives like baron.
Sometimes just being out of their vision is enough to threaten.
If they are cutting off your escape a lot of times you can collapse on them since they've surrounded themselves leaving their carries vulnerable.
You can do a lot of tricky **** like pushing a wave and then acting like you left and just pop back up and go for the kill.
Dying near major objectives can cost you a lot.
The most important thing is your team MUST adjust their play to your split push. They have to always be able to disengage and stay near objectives. This is the biggest mistake I see when I watch students. They risk 4v5s in the open field. SUPER BIG KEY #2: If someone is split pushing on your team you MUST adjust to them and make safe decisions.
The big thing about split pushing is it allows you to modify your build to make you more 1v1 oriented because you are avoiding team fights.
Okay that sounds good...but who the heck should I play?
The best split pushers should have strong dueling, good siege damage, good wave clear, and strong disengage. Some good options are:
Trynd - Crazy good escapes, great 1v1, great dives, great jungle clear, great wave clear, weak in team fights. He's the best imo.
Singed - Hard to force out of lane and can safely control the enemy top laner. Running teleport creates great pressure while still having presence over objectives. Most junglers just ignore him because he's too hard to take down if he farmed well. His team fight presence is stronger than most of these split pushing champs.
Trundle - No one realizes how crazy strong his dueling is if he builds life steal/attack speed. His wave clear sucks but he's hard to kill and hard to force around. With his ult and kit he can dive easily. Definitely a strong pick.
Aatrox - I don't have a great feel for him but AFAIK his dueling is good and he can dive well and siege well. His wave clear is okay. His big problem is his escapes are super weak because he's an all in type champ and thus requires extra caution. Weak in team fights unless you build him tankier.
Nid - You don't see AD nid too often but it's still viable. Strong wave clear, high mobility, decent sustain/dueling, junglers rarely gank her. She can just be a constant force top lane. She's mediocre in team fights.
Master yi - The changes to Yi make him reasonable for split pushing. He can siege decently. I honestly don't have enough experience with him to really give a lot of input.
Xin - Amazing dueling and weak team fight presence. He has okay dives and can siege pretty well. His two big problems are his disengage and wave clear. Save your ult for mainly disengages and sometimes diving. He's pretty similar to aatrox as far as strengths and weaknesses go.
Rengar - Amazing disengage aslong as his ult is up. You don't even have to play cautiously with him. Pretty awesome sieging and 1v1. Weakish team fight presence. Weakish wave clear.
Shen - He's analagous to Singed just with weaker wave clear but more global presence. Global presence defines him. He can't be pushed around, wins trades by grinding people down, and has good gank synergy. His biggest problem is his disengage is mediocre but he makes up for that in beefiness.
Shaco - People underestimate his split pushing. He can really be a pain because his 1v1 is crazy strong if you build him correctly and his disengage is amazing. His ult is also incredible for setting up tower dives. His wave clear is pretty ****ty so I recommend snagging a shiv on him. IMO split push shaco is mandatory after a mid game team fight transition.
Teemo - The captain cannot be killed. He's very similar to Nid in his playstyle except squishier when someone closes the gap on him. Shroom the river and gank paths as well as a few in lane for retreating (especially from strong gap closers). I used to level move quick first but that's not effective now with hybrid and ap teemo becoming so popular. His big weakness is lack of sustain and mediocre wave clear w.o dropping a shroom. He also wins a lot of top lane matchups and can snowball an early edge. His objective control is pretty awesome with his shrooms and mobility. His team fighting is okay at best.
Udyr - You don't see him much anymore in lane but he's still effective. The problem is lane udyrs build tiger which is pretty ****py wave clear. He's really hard to bully in lane and he gets to immovable object mode pretty quickly. His disengage is pretty good between his bear stun/move speed and beefiness + turtle. He has very strong dives and pretty reasonable sieging. His team fight presence is really hit or miss but he inevitably falls off late game.
AD Kennen - Do NOT split push with ap kennen. It can work but shouldnt be your game plan because you pick ap kennen for his team fights. HOWEVER, AD Kenbro is an absolute menace to deal with. His playstyle is very similar to Teemo except with more physical damage and pow. His 1v1 after he builds bork is really strong and he can synergize with jungle dives really well. Plus everyone underestimates him! His tower dps and disengage are also both strong. Like Teemo, he wins most lanes too. Give him a shot!
Below are champs that either I don't play a lot or don't advise dor split pushing but they can still serve a purpose.
Jax - I just don't play him a lot. His mid game split push is good because of his dueling, disengage and diving but late game you need to frontline their adc with him.
Fiora - She's just too hard to win lane with and has no resilience. Her diving and dueling are both pretty damn good if she can make it to mid game. Her team fight presence is essentially just her ult against a good team. Bad teams might let her run wild if they underestimate her. Just not the best pick IMO.
Gangplank - I don't play him enough to really know. His global presence is really nice. I think his dueling is really hit or miss. His disengage is pretty meh with oranges/speed boost/ult. I just don't see him as the best pick.
Lee Sin - Actually a very strong pick AFAIK I just never play him. He's not my cup of tea. His team fight presence is pretty ****py imo but his 1v1, diving and disengage are all exceptional. I advise you to build hydra for the wave clear and the rest depends on game flow tbh. You'll end up getting a BT a lot and then building tanky. Definitely a good pick I just don't know enough about him!*
Riven - I used to play her a lot. I just don't know how I feel about her. I know she's extremely hit or miss. I think she's sort of like jungle jarvan in a sense that she's above average in everything but not completely dominant in anything. Most Rivens seem to struggle with team fight transition.
Renekton - He wins lanes easily and then can't do **** in team fights. That's all I really know about Rene. His diving is good. His disengage is okay (matchup dependent). He can grind people down well. His wave clear is great but his sieging blows. That's my assessment. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Shyvana - She's just always underestimated. I like to do really aggressive lane Shyvana with ignite/exhaust but it's weaker ever since they nerfed red pot. Her dueling is amazing. Her disengage is awesome when she gets her ult. She has strong gank synergy. Great wave clear especially with hydra. Her sieging is pretty good too.
Warwick - He's a pretty unorthodox pick and that's why I like him. His 1v1 is incredible. His dives are strong too. His problem is his disengage is **** and his wave clear is ****. It's also better to transition him to the team fight mid game.
Nasus - He should only split push during the farming phase. Sure he can do it pretty damn well all game but his team fight presence is ungodly.
I think I covered every reasonable split pusher. ADCs can do it too but generally they're better suited for team fights. If you have any questions or if I left anyone out just let me know.
But u have still to fight with ur team if its needed. Dont let them alone u have to watch for it and give calls
