Straight up smartcast is faster, but there is benefits to both.
Myself have a mix of the two with normal casting on shift+the key. Just to learn ranges or cast with precision.
Do whatever feels comfortable to you, honestly.

I've been using smartcast for a very long time. A friend then told me about smartcast with indicators. I tried it, but I felt regular smartcast is easier and faster. But it's all up to you, honestly.
I think it will be hard to learn the ranges to the point that you don't have to think anymore while using indicators. It also makes it harder to feel the ranges of other champions then.
EDIT: "other" as in "not yours".

********'s a pretty good fertilizer
I think it depends on the kind of spell that you are about to cast. If it is a long range skill shot, like a nidalee spear, or a thresh/blitz hook, or something like xertah's Q, i think smartcast with range indicators would be best, since landing those skillshots is so core to the kits of certain champions.
Other skillshots, like cait's
Piltover Peacemaker, or ezreal's
Mystic Shot are easier to land, and probably don't need smartcast range indicators.
My two cents

range indicators are nice for when you actually do want to aim something, but its not like its really that much slower than without it since you can still press the button and release it to cast the skill

Range indicators can get really messed up if you're CC'd while trying to cast a spell. This is the main reason why I stick to smartcast. Using manual cast or range indicators adds a big enough delay that can often mean the difference between
Riftwalking out before you're stunned or getting CC'd before the ability goes off.
What lugi said is probably the best way to go about it. I'm just too lazy to learn new keybindings.

Personally i use smartcast with range indicators. I find that i can still smartcast real quick with champs i am used to(i press the button and let go immediately and it casts immediately as smartcast should). Or i just hold on the key and can see my cast range and let go once iv'e aimed. If by chance i don't want to cast the spell anymore i just click to move to some different spot and let go of my key and the spell doesn't go off. So basically best of both worlds. I don't have to point and click like i would if i didn't have smartcast and i have the range indicators in case i'm playing a champ im not so familiar with that i need the range on to see where it is going and how far. :)
