Champion Build Guide
Statistically
Ryze is doing really poorly in the Top Lane but I really enjoy the champion and I mainly play Top so I decided to try and make it work. Although I haven't had incredible results, my playstyle managed to get a 55% win rate compared to his below 44% win rate in Diamond+.
You should look to pick
Ryze Top only if you enjoy the champion and want to try it in toplane, enjoy the champion's kit so much that you want to add him to your champion pool or you just want to try a different hard to play champion with an unique playstyle. This pick requires a lot of patience and concentration in the Top Lane and you won't be able to deal with that if you don't enjoy the champion that much. This is not a ''Secret OP Pick'', it is more of a niche pick that can be picked every game if you put in the work not to int in certain stages of the game and this guide is going to teach you how!

You should look to pick

PROS+ Good Scaling+ Great DPS+ Roaming Ultimate+ Great Wave Clear |

CONS- Weak Early Game- Low Mobility- Hard to Learn- Easy to Punish |

To solve this issue I always start

After doing this you should look to freeze the wave and get as much cs as possible while trading with the enemy laner when you can. If you are in a matchup that allows it you should look to poke the enemy laner down, push waves and get plates but that won't always be the case so you should just look to survive the lane phase and punish the enemy toplaner only when it's possible while keeping the wave in a state where you are safe from ganks or getting engaged on.
Playing
Ryze in the Mid and Late Game becomes much easier than in the Early Stages of the game since your Wave Clear starts to become insane and your full combo starts one shotting people.
Although you become very strong as a champion if you played right in the Lane Phase you are still killable and there are some things that you should look to be doing in order to increase your chances of winning.
Being patient is still a really important aspect of the gameplay even at this stage of the game since your champion, although very strong, is really easy to punish due to the lack of mobility and tankiness. You should not be scared to teamfighting aggressively or side laning though since these are key macro aspects of the game but you should be adapting these aspects to the champion you are playing and the game you are in since every game is different.

Teamfighting as
Ryze is pretty straight forward in theory but quite hard to execute perfectly in practice.
Since
Ryze is a Ranged Mage with very little escape and mobility you should be looking to stay as further back as you can but in a position where you can still punish bad movement or missed skill shots from the enemy team and shred them from that point onwards.
A general rule on champions like
Ryze that I use is to try and not engage on the enemy team and just wait them to come at me and misplay but if your team is behind and you need to force a play in order to win you should play that forced fight as slow as you can and try to focus on your positioning and the threats that can come to you from the enemy team.

Since

A general rule on champions like

Playing side lane as a champion that can be picked off really easily can be tricky at times but it can still be done if your side lane timing is right.
As
Ryze you should always look to get
Farsight Alteration so you can ward further away when you are pushing waves and making pressure but most of the time as a Mage you should be just collecting waves on the side lanes that are pushing to your side of the map. Your goal should be to even these waves when the enemy fighter/assassin is alive and then look to make a play with your team if possible and you should be looking to side lane aggressively only when the enemy assassin or fighter that can kill you is dead or when you have too big of a lead on him. Other times when you can side lane aggressively is when you have enough backup from your team or when you have vision on the enemy team and know they can't collapse on you.

Choosing what items to buy on
Ryze is pretty straight forward due to the small amount of items that work with the champion but I will try to explain why and when to take each item besides the obvious ones.

Everfrost This is usually the most reliable Mythic that you can go as ![]() ![]() |

Zhonya's Hourglass This item is a must go if the enemy team has a lot of ad champions that can get to you in teamfights and the ![]() ![]() |

Abyssal Mask This item is really good when your team lacks a frontline and the enemy team has a lot of magic damage threats. I would only take this item 3rd since it doesn't provide much mana so you will need ![]() |
