Viktor is probably the hardest matchup for Smolder and I'd highly suggest banning him if you want to play Smolder as a blind pick. His Q outtrades you early in the lane and his E poke is virtually undodgeable. The best thing you can do is try to neutralize and hope you get some ganks. Rushing T2 boots so you can run back to lane quicker is good, it might even be worth rushing Symbiotic Soles for the quicker recall, but I haven't actually tried this because I avoid this matchup at all costs.
Orianna
Orianna is very strong in lane but a bit more survivable than Viktor. Mostly this will be a skillshot check, and rushing swiftness boots can help a lot. Try time your fleet proc with when you need to go to CS in order to help dodge her Q. Also be willing to trade 1 or 2 Es early to dodge her Q. Basically you're just doing whatever you can to avoid damage, and hopefully you can get through the lane in a reasonable spot.
Irelia
Irelia is a very difficult matchup but if you play really well you can avoid dying. Try keep the wave frozen on your side of the lane whenever possible, and either E or just dodge her stun to avoid getting all-inned. Make sure to rush steelcaps for extra survivability, and go mortal reminder 3rd. Going down CS in lane is completely fine as long as you don't die.
Aurora
Aurora is overall quite hard but against an inexperience Aurora you can actually win pretty hard. If you take boneplating + grasp and trade hard level 1 you should be able to build a pretty big lead. From here, you just need to try dodge as many skillshots and possible and punish her when she wastes them. If you can get a reasonable lead on your first base you should be in a good spot. Highly recommend rushing swiftness boots for the slow resist.
Annie
Annie has a lot of threat in lane but gets outscaled pretty hard. It's very important to rush merc treads, and I'd probably go grasp + boneplating to try and force some favorable trades early. Your biggest advantage is you farm a lot quicker and she has low waveclear, so keep pushing and try not to die to ganks.
Hwei
Against Hwei you need to try and keep control of the wave whenever possible, if he gets past the wave and can QQ you for free you'll take a lot of damage. Make sure to stay behind the creeps but slightly to the side so he can't QE + EE you. If he uses all his CDs on the wave, try zone him off or look for a trade. Post 6 try stand a bit further back to avoid his EE as if it hits he'll immediately ult you. Swiftness boots can help a lot here.
Lux
Lux is a very annoying champion but shouldn't have a lot of kill threat. Early game, stay apart from the wave and focus on pushing it in and make sure she can't E you and the wave at the same time. There's no real secret to this matchup other than always be pushing, don't get hit by skillshots and rush mercs.
Xerath
Xerath is a simple skillshot check. Stand apart from the wave, try auto it as often as possible to make him have to use abilities on the wave to match. If he uses all his cooldowns try and zone him off/slow down his push. Rush swiftness boots.
Yone
Yone can be quite rough with his strong chase down and great 1v1. Punish him levels 1-2, and after this try keep the wave in the middle or on your side. Rush steelcaps and respect when he has Q3 available. If you go relatively even you should have a pretty solid chance to win in teamfights, but his sidelaning is extremely strong so avoid 1v1ing him at all costs. Go mortal reminder 3rd.
Syndra
Syndra can be pretty rough but if you dodge enough skillshots with fleet movement speed you should be okay. If she wastes her CDs you can try chase her down a little or zone her off the wave. Once you get merc treads you should be ok.
Zed
Zed is one of the hardest matchups for Smolder because he's functionally a ranged champion, has no resources and isn't countered by any specific boot. If there were a lane to do a shojin rush for the HP this would probably be it. Try and position aggro early to force him to Q the wave, and then whenever he throws out his W just make sure you dodge at least one of his Qs. Post 6 don't push past halfway or he will chase you down the lane.
Yasuo
Yasuo will bully a lot early but you mega outscale him in teamfights. Keep the wave frozen on your side and just try trade defensively + farm. Take grasp and rush steelcaps. As long as he doesn't snowball either in lane or on the sidelane you will just win for free. Be careful because he can windwall your ult.
Mel
Mel is a bit of a pest but she shouldn't actually be able to push you out of lane unless you get hit by too much damage for free. Take fleet and rush swiftness boots, and try regain control of the wave whenever she's on cooldown. Be careful because she can W (and reflect) your R. You should outscale if you farm well.
Neeko
Neeko is very powerful in lane but falls off hard. Early just make sure you don't get hit by her E and you'll avoid the majority of her Q damage. Rush merc treads ASAP.
Akali
Akali is very scary early but you should do well into her in teamfights. Let her push the wave into you, take boneplating + grasp and trade purely defensively. Rush hexdrinker first item and complete it into maw 3rd if she gets fed. She's very powerful with her CDs up, but the cooldowns are very long, so you should be safe or able to punish while they are down. Don't get caught too far up in the wave and try avoid any early skirmishes.
Akshan
Akshan can be one of the harder matchups more for the map than for you individually. You have to give prio up to him early since he's so strong, but you will start to win trades with more levels + steelcaps later on. The problem is it's more or less a coinflip that Akshan can impact the map before this point and end up too fed to deal with. If he doesn't snowball you should easily outpace him in the mid game. Don't get caught too far up in the lane, and take boneplating + grasp in order to trade back defensively.
Azir
Azir is overall favorable for Smolder, but you do have to be careful of his level 6 gank setup. If he ever Qs his soldier forward look to walk around them and zone him off the wave/force trades while his soldiers are out of position. Later in the lane he can start to do a lot of damage, but by this point you can just focus on farming since Azir doesn't use his mid priority well anyway.
Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia in lane can be scary but she'll really struggle into you in teamfights. Keep the wave in the middle or on your side and don't let yourself get run down the lane, be willing to trade E to run away if necessary. Rush swiftness boots.
Corki
Corki is a slightly favorable for Smolder and you definitely outscale, but there's a few things to know. Take grasp + boneplating, and make sure you run away from him when he has his E on. Outside of this you should win, especially in shorter trades. Be careful of random Q/rocket poke. Rush steelcaps ASAP.
Diana
Diana is a really annoying statcheck champion early but you'll heavy outscale her. Take boneplating + grasp and do your best to avoid Qs so that it takes more time for her to proc your boneplating. Keep the wave in the middle or on your side so she doesn't have room to run you down the lane. You can rush hexdrinker if you feel like you need it.
Ekko
Against Ekko take grasp + boneplating. If he has hail of blades you should still be able to beat him level 1 if he tries to E onto you while in the creep wave. If he starts Q, look to zone him off the wave while it's down and push him in. The only real danger in this matchup is being caught too far up in the wave, or him finding a random W onto you.
Fizz
Fizz is strong in lane but gets heavily outscaled. Take boneplating + grasp and rush hexdrinker. Look to get prio over the first 2 or 3 waves, but make sure the wave is coming back to you once he hits level 3. Don't let him E onto you unless you have boneplating up. Post 6, keep the wave in the middle for some safety whilst also stopping him from roaming, make sure you're ready with E to dodge his R.
Jayce
The Jayce matchup can be very very different depending on his runes/items. I'd recommend taking boneplating + grasp no matter what and rushing steelcaps. If Jayce has electrocute, he won't scale well but he'll be quite strong whenever he can Q onto you so let the wave come to you and trade defensively. If Jayce has anything else, you should win trades early as he won't have the mana to actually finish you off. If you can stop Jayce getting dirk first base you should be in a good spot, and if he does get dirk you will want to avoid trades and play to scale.
LeBlanc
LeBlanc is very powerful in the early levels but will get easier as time goes on. Take boneplating + grasp. You should be able to win trades when boneplating is up, so use this to get prio over the first 2 or 3 waves. Once she hits level 3 you want to let the wave come back to you, try dodge her chain when she goes to trade by fighting in the creep wave. Level 9 onwards you will start to win if you haven't fallen too far behind by this point. Rush merc treads.
Zoe
Zoe is pretty scary early but you farm faster and outscale her very hard. Early on, try get push over the wave and use the creeps to block her Qs/Es. When she picks up an item or summoner spell with her W be very careful as she'll probably try force something onto you. If she has ignite, look to base fairly early before dying. Rush merc treads ASAP.
Sylas
Sylas is very strong at trading early so you want to give up the prio. Take boneplating + grasp and do your best to dodge his E2. If Sylas doesn't punish you in the first few levels you should begin to win later in the lane, just don't let him snowball.
Tristana
Tristana is very scary early, but unless she snowballs from kills/plates you should have a much easier time in teamfights. Give prio over the wave early and never get jumped on UNLESS you have boneplating up. Rush steelcaps ASAP.
Vel'Koz
Vel'Koz isn't too bad but has a couple scary windows. You should be able to pressure hard early levels, keep pushing the wave and stay behind the creeps to avoid his Q. Post 6 as long as you don't get hit by his E you should be fine, so rush swiftness boots to dodge and be willing to use your E to avoid it.
Vladimir
Vlad can be kinda annoying for Smolder because you can't push him out of lane and his sustain is pretty good early. You can however punish his lack of waveclear by spam autoing the wave and trying to avoid him when his empowered Q is ready. Be careful getting one shot at 6 if he has electrocute. Make sure to build mortal reminder 3rd, and you can build executioner after 1st item IF you feel like you need it.
Katarina
Most of Katarina's threat comes from either chasing you down the lane with autos, or you stepping too close to a dagger. Do your best to keep the wave in the middle so that you can punish her and stop her from roaming, while also denying her the opportunity to roam. You can consider rushing hexdrinker in this matchup for extra survivability if you really need it. Take grasp + boneplating. Post 6 make sure you save E to run away from her R.
Ahri
Ahri has much better skirmishing and gank setup than you but isn't too threatening in the 1v1. Make sure that she can't Q both you and the wave by standing to the side of it. When her Q is down, try zone her off the wave to stop her from autoing in order to match the push. If possible try force her to base before she reaches lost chapter as that's where her waveclear really comes online.
Aurelion Sol
Aurelion Sol struggles to harass past the wave, and you should be able to keep prio most of the time. Keep autoing the wave and try move aggressively whenever he Es the wave (to try stop him from Qing the wave). The only danger is being caught too far up in the wave and being chased down by W. As long as you can run to the side with E or have some creeps in the way there is no real danger.
Ambessa
Ambessa has very good chase down which you need to be aware of, but she can't really stop you from farming if you keep the wave in the middle. You can take grasp + boneplating in this matchup which will help a lot as well. Be careful having your E cancelled at 6 by her R, but as long as you aren't super overpushed you should have no issue.
Lissandra
1v1 Lissandra is fairly easy but she has INSANE gank setup. Position next to the wave so she can't Q you and the wave at the same time, and try fish for Qs or autos on her when her Q is down. Make sure to play around your vision as losing flash is almost guaranteed a death in future. If you're super greedy you can buy ER first, but buying mercs is a lot safer.
Anivia
Anivia can be annoying in a couple spots but can't really stop you from stacking. Early game you have the advantage as long as you dodge her Q, but you will lose out on the trade if you get hit. Post 6 if you get caught too far up in the wave you will take a lot of damage, especially if you get your E cancelled somehow. Just try build a CS lead pre 6 and post 6 focus on farming, you'll outscale her for free. Mercs/swifties depending on enemy comp can both be good here.
Swain
Swain is a weak laner as long as you play to outrange his Q, and keep moving from side to side to try avoid his E. If you don't get hit by too many it should be free. The only real chance of dying is being caught by his E too far up in the lane post 6. Make sure to get mortal reminder 3rd in order to cut his healing, you can buy the executioner earlier if you need it but I wouldn't buy it before ER.
Naafiri
Early game Naafiri can be an issue because of her strong stats, but later on you'll deal with her without issue. You can also gain stacks of her dogs which accelerates you further. Take grasp + boneplating and rush steelcaps. Be careful being too far up in the lane and being chased down, so try keep the wave in the middle for the most part. If she Ws you don't E instantly but save it to dodge one of her Qs.
Qiyana
Against Qiyana take boneplating + grasp, and I'd highly recommend picking up an early steelcaps as well. Her only real threat is running you down the lane when the wave is pushed, so try crash the first 2 waves (or 3 if you are greedy) and then have the wave bounce back to you. Try keep the wave in the middle so that she can't easily roam, but also can't easily chase you down. Try position to force her to Q creeps to farm if possible.
Ziggs
Ziggs can be annoying with his constant Q spam, but swifties rush will make dodging this a lot easier. Make sure to stand apart from the wave so he can't splash Qs on you. Keep autoing the wave to maintain prio.
Talon
Talon has a couple key windows to be aware of, but for the most part isn't actually that strong in lane. The key is making sure you don't get hit by both parts of W. As long as you dodge at least one, he can't instantly proc the bleed by jumping on you. You also definitely want grasp + boneplating in this matchup. Try force him to CS with W and as long as you don't take random damage it should be free. Go Shojin 2nd for the HP.
Taliyah
Taliyah can be a bit annoying early since you won't be able to match her push, but she can't do much with the prio until level 6 by which time you should have a bit more waveclear. She can't really stop you from farming though and you should do well into her on the sidelane.
Galio
Galio is pretty easy if you know what you are doing but there are a couple things to be careful of. His Q poke can actually hurt, so you have to position to make sure he can't Q to last hit a creep and poke you at the same time (make him choose). Also make sure you are either out of range of his E, or dodging side to side so it's hard to hit. The worst case scenario is you get hit by E and it cancels your E in which case you'll lose the trade. Unless you make some big mistake early you should outscale for free.
Kassadin
Kassadin for the most part is very low threat to you, and you should be able to build a big CS lead. Focus on punishing him pre 6, as if he hits level 6 relatively even and with electrocute he can actually start to trade back into you. You most likely will need a Maw later in the game against Kassadin, but probably not before 4 or 5 items.
Ryze
Ryze has a lot of push but not a lot of ways of poking you out. Just do your best to match the push, but ultimately you will probably be pushed in. Be careful of his point and click gank setup if you're far up in the wave, and otherwise just focus on farming. In mid game or teamfights you vastly outrange him and it should be very easy.
Twisted Fate
Twisted Fate doesn't pressure the lane directly but you need to limit his opportunities to roam. Try keep push on the wave by constantly autoing and zoning him off the wave if his W is on CD. Try ward his path to bot lane (or top lane if it's a volatile matchup). Be aware that by pushing aggressively you are very vulnerable to ganks, but good warding/hugging should prevent this. Mercs are also required vs TF, but you don't need them too early.
Veigar
Veigar will mostly be a free scaling lane for both of you, but you'll scale a lot better. Try not to take too much Q poke for free and focus on pushing him in and farming well yourself. Merc treads are a must vs Veigar, although you can skip them early to just rush your item.
Zilean
Zilean is a very weak laner, try and position aggressively next to the wave, but far enough away that he can't bomb you and the wave at the same time. Try zone him off the wave whenever his Q is on CD as his trading will be very weak. Mercs or swifties are both very good depending on what other champions are on their team.
Malzahar
Probably the freest Smolder matchup imaginable. You can stack your Q off his voidlings so just focus on Qing them the moment they come out. Try be a little efficient with your mana early (not too many Ws or Es) to make sure you have mana to stack. The only real threat is flash R at 6, so try get some vision down.
Seraphine
Seraphine does scale reasonably well but she can't really pressure in lane, so you should be able to free farm. If she uses CDs on the wave try and zone her off while her CD is down to ensure that you keep priority over the wave. Mercs are very valuable vs Seraphine, but you don't need them early.

Laning Phase
Laning as Smolder is one of the most difficult parts of the champion and can depend a lot matchup to matchup. One of the most important things to realize is that especially in the early levels, stacking perfectly should take a backseat to trading. Obviously, if you can do both that's great, but it's super important that you take advantage of your strong level 1 in order to put yourself at an intial advantage.
At level 1 use your strong autos + low q CD to get prio on the wave, and if your opponent tries to walk up without a cooldown look to either zone them or chase them down with a fleet auto. If you have boneplating you can also look to trade aggressively while this is up.
Levels 2 and 3 hopefully you have push over the wave, and can use the fact that you're higher level + have a bigger wave in order to win trades. You can Q last hits when possible or Q your opponent if they come up to the wave. Be very careful using too much mana on W and only use this if you can guarantee followup autos or Q. E can be used to avoid key abilities and is one of the best ways to ensure you remain healthy in the first few levels.
It can also be good to force an early base as Smolder, do this by trading out your HP and then TPing back to lane. This can make sure your opponent doesn't reach strong early components like chapter/alternator/dirk/sorcs etc and you are much stronger than your opponents matched on weaker components.
Generally, as the lane goes on it will get more favorable for you, especially around level 8-9 you have significant kill pressure. Level 6-7 can be pretty scary as most champions are spiking around this time, you can use an ult to one shot the wave to help you reset in a bad situation if you really need it.
Mid Game
In the mid game you want to accelerate towards 2 items and 225 stacks as quickly as possible. The best way to do this is to try and shove the sidelanes out as far as you are able to without dying. Try have have your TP available as that will let you sidelane while still being able to TP into a teamfight if necessary. Be very picky with your fights early as one of the worst things you can do on Smolder is TP to a teamfight and nothing ends up happening while you lose time farming. Simply by being efficient Smolder should be accelerating compared to other champions because he farms quicker and scales harder, so time spent dead or walking around randomly hurts you a lot.
Make sure to setup your sidelane vision as well, ideally a pink + a yellow ward to keep you as safe as possible. With ER especially Smolder farms camps very quickly so try and push waves and immediately pressure turrets or jungle camps. While you are comfortable fighting from 1 item and 125 stacks onwards, 225 and 2 items is where you really come online so only join fights before this if they are stacked in your favor somehow (your team is stronger, more members at the fight etc).
Teamfighting and Skirmishing
Smolder teamfights as a front to back caster. You're mainly looking to just Q whoever is in range of you and try hit as many targets as possible with W or R. The Smolder teamfighting skill mostly comes from knowing when to use R (ideally in chokes or following up CC) as well as E usage. E has a long enough CD that you are only going to get 1 or 2 Es off in a teamfight, and while it's down you are going to be very vulnerable to threats and so it will become harder to DPS. Consider E more of a repositioning tool rather than using it for damage.
Remember that you are a DPS champion and not a burst champion, so don't risk yourself in order to hit backliners unless they are really out of position. Try keep in mind the key threats and specific abilities to avoid in the teamfight e.g. Leona R, Syndra E, etc and think about how you are going to play around them. Sometimes they can be avoided/dodged/outranged, and other times you might just have to wait for your opponents to use them first before you commit.
