this match up is awful. He can poke you with summon aery, disengage with his hammer. He can kill you at every stage. Start dorens shield rush ninja tabi and play very safe. Only go agressive with jungle help and focus on team fights.

Introduction to me!

Hey everyone!

My name is EmpoweredQs and I am a High plat low diamond Jax Main. I have been playing League of Legends since season 1, Victorious Jarvan is my claim to fame. I have never taken the game seriously and have hung around gold while playing 30-40 ranked games a season. Finally tried a little bit last season and quickly hit plat.

I decided I was done watching league content and wanted to create my own!

In this guide you will find my in depth analysis to Jax as well as tips and tricks. I do stream and have a youtube channel that specializes in different builds and match ups. I have a chapter dedicated to links to these videos for your viewing pleasure!

Starting Items and the level 1 trade

For starting items you have 2 options, corrupting pot or Doran's Shield and 1 pot. Take pot for almost every match up. Only time you take shield is against hard match up range match ups - pantheon, jayce, kennen, galio.

When in lane you are either gonna lvl 1 E cheese or play passively. see video

I do this in most match ups. As stated in the video be careful of letting the wave get frozen on enemy tower side. You have to get the shove done properly!

Against more aggressive champs I like to let them make the first move. I do this with Fiora and Tryndamere. When Fiora goes for her first poke I E and trade or Trynd spins block the hit and engage. I also do not level 1 cheese when I have a very agressive jungler, lee sin for example, to keep gank options open.

Note:
With the change to scuttle crab in patch 8.10 this becomes even more beneficial. The Crab now restores %50 mana and gives a lot more gold and exp. Shoving the first two waves allows you to contest, which Jax is very good at, or just plain take depending on jungler positioning.

Early laning phase.

Jax has a relatively weak early game. His biggest issue is a lack of sustain. Your only sustain is your corrupting pots, which is why I almost always start with it. By doing the level 1 trade, even if you dont kill, you can normally establish some lane dominance which will help keep you safe.

If this does not work out your E is your bread and better. Neace, a former league coach, used to say No E **** me! That is Jax. If you do not have your E play safe!!! it is how you negate all of the enemy damage. For example, when playing against renekton he dashes in aggressively, pop E into his W. If his W goes off you can follow his dash with Q W trade and back off. If you E and he doesnt W back off.

You have to think about the enemies sustain. If renekton just heals back the dmg of an equal trade it favors him. Same for champs like Tryndamere and Nasus. Most top laners have sustain so you have to win trades not go equal!

For tough matchups: Pantheon - Jayce
Focus on last hitting and not taking bad trades. Most of these champs are very aggressive and open themselves up to ganks. Look for jungle pressure and focus on not dying.

Mid Game - splitting vs team fighting

Jax gets a big power spike and 6 with his ultimate and when you finish your trinity force. He gets a ton of free stats with his ult and the 3 hit combo. the way you want to start trading her is to auto attack a minion twice and then leap. If its a mobile champion you can w leap. You will get the ultimate passive and W damage stacked. IF you have a sheen this will combo as well. This is great against range champions because one q jump will do around 300-400 dmg.

If you do not get early kills don't worry. Your big goal is continuing to Cs well and scale up. Once you have Trinity Tiamat you can duel almost everyone, so your goal is to scale.

Team fighting vs split pushing.

There are some things you need to ask yourself when deciding to split or team fight. The most important is do you win in the 1v1 vs your opponent. You do not want to be caught in a losing 1v1. If this is the case shove wave past river and group.

If you win you look at your team comp. What is your teams engage, disengage, enemy team engage. If the enemy has a sion, WW or leona and can hard initiate and you do not have disengage will your team win the fight? This is a mistake I have made while splitting. I win lane but my team loses and I do not group fast enough. Look at the whole picture and find how you will be most useful to the TEAM!

Things to keep in mind while splitting
1. Does your team need you. Will they get engaged on then you probably have to group.
2. VISION!!! This is key. You have to be aware of the enemy team at all times!
3. Can your team win a 4v4, if not can they disengage from the enemy
4. can you win a 2v1 or get away from a 2v1 depending on the jungler and champion your laning against
5. what objectives are up and is your TP up. If infernal is up and you win 5v5, may be worth to group, same with baron.
6. Is the enemy laners TP up? is yours?

There are a few other tips to splitting as well. If you need to group you can just push the minions past the river. This will cause them to eventually bounce off the tower, about 40 seconds if tier 2 tower, or force a enemy champion to collect farm in which case it still bounces. This allows you to group or go to different lane and make a play!

The other is kind of like Yasuo. With Yasuo you always want to fight in enemy minion wave for dashes. With Jax you can do almost the opposite. If you get engaged on you can easily jump away to one of you minions. I have flashed jumped this way to save my skin many times!

Team Fighting.
Your goal if you decide to team fight should be 1 thing, good flanks into the back line! A lot of the times you will see me pop e and after 1 second flash onto the enemy adc and 1 shot combo them. If not the stun is hopefully enough for someone on our team to finish the job. With the carry down, the rest should be easy!

This changes a little bit if there is not tank on your team. Being the main tank isnt fun but sometimes necessary. I build full tank when the enemy has lots of engage and our team has no disengage. Essentially, if I do not protect them will my whole team die. This is normally in a game were I can not win by split pushing either. When this happens I try to build items like Omen and peal for my team.

late game - when you really don't need a weapon!

There is not a lot to add about late game with Jax. Most of the mid game stuff applies here as well. Questions to ask yourself:
1. should I still be splitting or do I need to group
2. how are team fights going for your team
3. can you still win in a fight against the other top laner
4. does your team keep getting picked off
5. does your team need help securing vision

Asking these questions will tell you to group for towers/inhibs or to split.
Remember to go on the opposite side of the next objective when splitting and secure vision!
