You don't beat him in most of the game. I recommend dodging. In case you decide to play anyway, stay away, don't challenge to 1v1s even if you're ahead. He has insane damage and at the moment, he's really strong overall.
Ashe
Ashe is mostly played support nowadays but she is very hard to deal with for Aphelios in the early game. She can slow you down and make it easier for the enemy support to go in, she has an amazing ult to setup ganks, and you can't really run away from her. Obviously, you can run her down later into the game but be careful early as she can be a hell to deal with. I suggest taking the Fleet Footwork page against her, and consider picking up cleanse if you don't have a Morgana and they have a follow up CC spell to her ult.
Tristana
Pain in the a** to deal with. She bursts faster than you but you will outscale her eventually. Still, be wary of her burst damage as it is high across the game and she will look to all in you.
Twitch
Generally speaking, Twitch isn't a real problem, unless he has an enchanter, in which case you probably won't be able to beat him early due to your low attack speed. Be careful of his stealth as he can catch you off guard and kill you quickly. Later in the game you can burst him very quickly if he positions badly, but keep your eyes open as he tends to open a bit later into a fight.
Kog'Maw
This can go either way. He's a late game monster, but is half a champion if not paired with an enchanter. You should be able to beat him early if he isn't and after that he becomes fairly useless.
Caitlyn
Skill matchup. You match her range early on with your Calibrum so she won't be able to bully you too much. She has better waveclear until you get Infernum so she might push you in. Try to farm it out, you scale much better.
Ezreal
Not really a threat. Can be a pain to deal with in the late game since he outranges you with his q but overall you scale better. Stay behind minions to avoid his q damage and try to push him off the wave so his passive drops before engaging.
Jinx
Not even a threat to Aphelios. She needs passive to get online, even with items. You can match her rocket range with calibrum and keep her at distance. Super squishy too.
Jhin
Mostly, Jhin isn't a problem. A good Jhin can be because he will space you well and usually they take fleet footwork so it can be hard to trade back sometimes but overall you outDPS him hard. Also, be mindful of how you trade against him. His 4th shot deals a 1/4 or 1/5 of your health early on. The most common way Jhins do this is they save fleet for their third shot and with the extra speed from it, they get in range and auto you.
Kai'Sa
You outrange her, and scale just as well as her. Bully her in the laning phase and don't let her scale. She can't kill you unless you mess up. Be aware of her burst if she gets close because they take hail of blades and her combo of three autos and W can really hurt if you're not careful.
Kalista
Early game monster. Hard to hit with Calibrum Q and she does more damage than any ADC early on. That being said, she doesn't scale very well and you do outrange her in auto attacks, so weave in an auto if you can to try and poke her out of lane. Don't let her get on top of you because you won't escape due to her mobility.
Miss Fortune
Lane bully. Her E has a really long range and she likes to poke a lot. She can be a pain to deal with but if you space correctly, you should be fine. You outscale her very hard and can even fight her at 1 item fairly safely. Be aware of her position as MFs like to slowly choose their position before ulting.
Nilah
Not sure quite yet, haven't seen her all that much. She seems to be really strong but she's a melee adc and you can play against her somewhat easily. Don't let her get on top of you (in melee) as she can dodge autos and beat you up in the meantime. Try to poke her out of lane because her passive gives her and her support extra XP so she will start outleveling you after 6 if you play too passively.
Lucian
Careful with his all ins. He has low range but his burst is crazy and he can get on top off you. Try to play around his cooldowns. You scale better but his burst is always very high so try to space him.
Samira
Unplayable if they have an engage support. If you somehow manage to beat her then it's possibly playable. The problem is her W can block your ult and your mirror Chakrams which can significantly reduce your DPS output. Good Samiras know this and will try to time it so. You do outscale her, so if you can get to the late game, you can possibly beat her. Just don't challenge her to 1v1s.
Sivir
Very much a skill matchup. You both have the same objective which is to scale into the mid-late game. She has better waveclear but you can deal with it with infernum. She's low ranged so try to poke her as much as possible. Beware of her spellshield, she can heal off of it and block your ult as well. Her shield blocks only the first part of your ult so it's not that big of a deal later, but early it can be decisive.
Varus
Varus isn't even a champion at the moment. That being said, he can poke you out so try to dodge his Qs as much as possible. Take extra care when he's 6 because his ult is a crazy gank setup and can lead to some insane damage if he plays around his W passive properly.
Vayne
I love this matchup. You can smack Vayne in almost any stage of the game. She's low range, useless early game. You can remove her from the game early and that's what you should look to do. Try not to die to her though, it will make the lane a lot harder. Burst damage is her biggest nightmare and you can burst a lot. Beware of condemns as well. Lategame she might buy Randuin so try to finish before that.
Xayah
Once again, a skill matchup. You can beat her due to her low range but be careful how you play around her feathers. She is significantly stronger when paired with an enchanter and especially Rakan since her W can proc off of him and deal massive damage even in the early game. She also scales as hard as you and she has a safety net within her ultimate so be mindful.
Yasuo
Same thing as Samira. They play pretty much the same and have the same goal. His windwall also destroys your mirror Chakrams so try to bait it out before fighting him. The only difference is that he is melee after all and you can play as you would usually play against melee champs.
Zeri
Zeri is even weaker than you early. Most Zeris go Resolve secondary due to her laughable base stats. She takes lethal tempo so if you have PTA, play around short trades where you can proc it and weave in an auto or two. Try to dodge her Ws, especially over the wall because it can deal some crazy damage and play behind your support and minions early because her autos(Qs) can't go through.
Alistar
Alistar can't do much against you if you space correctly, although be careful of his flash/hexflash engages.
Blitzcrank
It's only as hard as your positioning skills.
Brand
Dodge his Ws and Stun. He does insane damage even without items. If he misses the stun try to force a trade against him because he's very weak. Be very wary of his damage post 6 because even if he misses his stun, his ult ignite into E and passive can deal insane damage.
Bard
Pokes for days. Bard is a very unique champion. He's not much of threat if you can dodge his q stun but he deals decent damage for a support. Fairly squishy so you will be able to burst him most of the time if you get on top of him. Careful with his creative ganks through walls with his jungler, set up vision and you should be okay.
Braum
Same with Samira/Yasuo. His E counters a lot of your kit and he can make the lane miserable. If he's paired with a Lucian or a Hail of Blades ADC (Tristana, Kai Sa for example) he can destroy you quickly if he flashes on you.
Galio
Not played bot most of the time but he's very abusable when his abilities are on CD. He has a strong CC combo so careful with your positioning.
Janna
Not much of a threat, she's more annoying if anything. She can cuck you from getting kills and she can poke fairly decently with autos, Q and W. Try not to overextend into her unless it's absolutely free because she will just waste your cooldowns, press Ult and disengage.
Karma
Dodge her Q, don't overextend. That's the lane. Karma can turn a fight around if she plays her cards right. Her poke is her biggest strong suit early on so be careful and don't underestimate her shielding and damage.
Leona
Take cleanse against her, especially if she has an Ashe, Cait or Jinx. Her simple kit allows for some crazy CC chains and she's very tanky with decent damage early, especially when paired with ignite. You can poke her down but be sure to space properly if you are daring.
Lulu
I hate this champion with a burning passion. She isn't really a threat herself (although she does decent damage because of her passive) but the combination of her very versatile kit with an ADC such as Twitch or Kog makes her a hell to deal with. I usually ban her or Yuumi.
Morgana
Same as Blitz, although Morgana can be quite a braindead champion. She uses stopwatch and ult. It's really hard to get her off of you if she flashes ults and your flash/galeforce is not available as she can ignore CC with her Black Shield. Overall, it is playable. Take cleanse if she's paired with Ashe,MF, Jinx and especially Cait.
Nami
Nami is cringe. She will walk up, poke and back out cause her passive gives her movespeed. The biggest thing is to dodge her bubble and try to trade when her E is down because it increases the enemy ADC damage a lot . Threat level 5 if paired with Lucian.
Nautilus
Naut is the same as Blitz with one exception. His ult. It's a point and click ability that WILL knock you up regardless. This usually leads into a hook, into an auto attack and into a kill. He's really tanky and does a lot of damage so try to poke him if possible, just be wary of the weird hitbox on his Q.
Pantheon
Crazy early game damage with a point and click stun. Do not, I repeat, do not die in this lane. If you do, it will become unplayable for everyone because after he kills you, he starts roaming which will make others flame you (with a good reason too). He's low range so just space correctly.
Pyke
Again, same as Blitz with more mobility and more playmaking potential. Pyke can be scary but if you can dodge his hook (try not to be in that position anyway) he's not much of a problem. Note that he is harder to pokedown cause his passive regenerates him but he has low HP so he can be killed fairly easily.
Rakan
Not a big problem without Xayah. With Xayah he's probably level 3. Take extra care with your positioning. He's really mobile for a support but he can also cc for a super long time if played right. Overall not a problem if you have hands.
Rell
This champion is a joke. She can cc for a long time if you get hit but if you're ever in a position where she lands her W on you without some crazy flash combo then you probably deserve it. Space her out, poke her. She deals no dmg, she's a CC bot and has the slowest attack speed in the game.
Renata Glasc
Renata is just disgusting. She's not a huge problem on her own, but her spells make the lane playout in a very cringe way because of her Bailout. Try to poke her down if she comes close and if you kill the enemy with her W up, just run away until they bleed out. Careful with her ult later because if you get hit, you will kill your own teammates quickly.
Senna
I hate this matchup. You almost entirely depend on your support for this one. Similarly to Nami, if she enters a trade, she will auto you (her range scales as well, disgusting) then use q to heal herself and steal your movespeed and exit the trade. Overall she isn't really that much of a threat but she scales infinitely and she can outdps the adc if the game goes too late or if she gets ahead. Try to stomp her early with your jungle or support if possible to stop her from coming online. She's quite squishy so there's that.
Seraphine
Seraphine is Sona 2.0. Overall not a threat but she can do some decent poke and her ult can change the course of the fight. Dodge her Qs and especially her Es and you should be okay.
Sona
Sona needs a rework. She's really bad. She needs 10 years to scale and in lane she does next to nothing. She's one of the squishiest champions in the game with no mobility besides her E (she needs levels and ap on this to scale up). Don't get hit by her ult though because 1 second of not moving in league can mean death but that's about the only thing she has going for her.
Soraka
Soraka can be annoying but it's not unplayable. Don't waste ammo on poking her adc and try to poke her instead while dodging her Q so you can deny her heals. She's overall not a problem if you can get on top of her but if you leave her unchecked you won't be able to kill anyone.
Swain
Not usually a bot lane champion but the gameplay consists of dodging his E. If you get hit you will probably die. Play around the E cooldown and poke him when it's down. In a fight 2v2, try to kill the adc first because Swain's DPS is not that high without his ult and his tankiness is pretty high for a 'support'.
Tahm Kench
In general, you want to ignore him during the lane. You can poke him with autos but he will heal most of it back. If you dodge his W and Q which are really slow and telegraphed he's not a big problem. Careful when going all in post 6 because he can eat you or protect his ADC with his ult.
Taric
Taric is not a problem. Auto him a lot during the early game to make him waste mana on shields and heals. His stun is pretty easy to dodge. If you do get hit, he can deal some crazy damage because of his passive so be careful about that. He's a late game champion, and as such, he needs items and time to come online. Watch out for his ult because even if he dies while casting, the target he's tethered too will still have ult cast on them.
Thresh
Same as Nautilus. Don't underestimate his playmaking potential and damage.
Vel'Koz
Played in the support role more often than mid, he's a pain to deal with. He can poke from a very safe range and he has self peel. He does nothing if you can get on top of him but Vel Koz is mostly played by mains who will not let this happen. Lots of them also take barrier for extra safety. If he stacks on you just try to stay away if he has ult. If you can dodge his Qs he doesn't do much but it's a tough mini game.
Lux
Similar to Vel Koz and Xerath but still quite easier to deal with due to her squishiness. Go for trades when her Q is down and dodge her E as much as possible. A good trick is to walk up to her when she casts E because she will usually cast it behind. Be careful as a good Lux will know this and bait you into doing it while also trying to land her Q at the same time.
Volibear
I didn't add a lot of off meta picks here because I simply don't think it's important but due to Volibear's recent popularity, I have to put him here. He's not much of if you keep your distance and dodge his telegraphed E. The biggest problem is his diving power because he can disable turrets. Pair this with a jungler and you have a big problem. Other than that, easy lane.
Xerath
Exactly the same playstyle as Vel Koz, except Xerath is even safer due to range advantage. Try not to get hit together with your minions because playing under turret vs Xerath is a hellish experience. He's still a squishy artillery mage though so there's that.
Yuumi
Permaban it. I mean it. She makes the lane have 5 summoner spells effectively. She can poke from safety, heal and shield for days and her all ins with ADC/JG/Top are insane. You can't really kill her because she sits on someone and is untargetable. Even if she somehow loses the lane, she will just stick to the jungler and wreak havoc on other lanes. I highly recommend banning her until her inevitable rework unless she's on your side.
Zilean
His poke is annoying and he can decently set up ganks with his slow but as long as you're not out of position you can poke him out of lane as he is really squishy and has no sustain.
Zyra
It's as bad as you are. Dodge her root and you should be fine. Destroy her plants when she spawns them and walk over her seeds if it's not too risky. Overall, if she misses root, she's not a big problem.
Alistar
Alistar thrives with high damage early game ADCs which Aphelios is not. Still, you can pick up some early kills with a good Ali and he can decently peel for you late which is what you need.
Ashe
Poke poke poke. Not bad but not great either. She can be quite useful because of her CC and scouting ability. Decent pick potential as well.
Bard
Might be the worst support for Aphelios. Aphelios needs support to scale. In a 1v1 scenario Aphelios can play safely but in a 2v1 he's very divable because of his squishiness and it can be a hell to play with Bard. There is some synergy with your ults but Aphelios hates champions like Bard.
Blitzcrank
Can be pretty good as he can net you some early kills and get you ahead. Not as good as Alistar and some others at peeling though so try to finish fast if you get ahead.
Braum
Braum has good synergy with Aphelios and some of his weapons. Overall a good support for your needs, he can protect you from a lot of things and you can also play aggressive alongside him.
Galio
Same as Alistar.
Janna
Janna is really good. She can remove Phel's weaknesses and is incredible at peeling. Her ult alone can save you from a dire situation.
Karma
IMO she's a worse Janna. Not very synergized with Aphelios but she can get you out of some bad spots and can help you go through the laning phase a bit easier.
Leona
Might sound hypocritical because of what I said about Alistar, but it's really hard to not get ahead with a Leona if she knows what she's doing. While I do think she's worse at peel than Alistar, her all in potential is so good and her ult synergizes very well with Aphelios'. She makes aggressive play possible. Probably a 2 vs poke champions though.
Lulu
Really good for Phel. She has everything you need, buffs, shields and peel. Ideal support for our moon boy.
Lux
Puke. I hate playing with her as a support as she doesn't really offer too much for you except for helping you poke. You do have a strong level 6 combo if she lands her root.
Morgana
Good synergy. Morg is super flexible, and does decent damage. She counters a lot of CC champs that are picked into Aphelios so you can count on her to protect you and play quasi frontline earlier in the game.
Nami
Amazing support for Aphelios. Less peel than Janna or Lulu but can increase your DPS output and kiting potential with her abilities.
Nautilus
I prefer Nautilus to both Blitzcrank and Alistar. He can engage and CC for you to do damage and has decent peel due to his many CC spells in his Q, passive and Ult.
Pantheon
Decent as he can net some free kills early but he has next to no peel or buffs so be careful.
Pyke
Similar to other hook champions minus the peel. Pyke is a very selfish support but if he gets ahead he will win you the game by himself so try to be patient.
Rakan
Good for Aphelios' needs. The problem is that Rakan syndrome makes these players go in and ignore the adc which can in some cases spell death for you. Try to play off of his plays as much as possible since his hit and run playstyle can complement you nicely early.
Rell
I love her design but it's just flawed. She's good at engaging but is a sitting duck afterwards. If you can get an advantage from her engages, you can come out on top and smash lanes easily. If she goes in and misses, just leave and save yourself.
Renata Glasc
Similar to Janna and Lulu. Her ult can peel off the enemy and she can give you a quasi GA with her W if you net a kill. Play aggro if she casts Bailout on you.
Senna
You don't really have a lot of synergy with Senna without your Calibrum. If you have Calibrum you can poke enemies a lot but without it, it's not much of a synergy.
Seraphine
Can be amazingly strong or completely useless. It depends on the Seraphine. Her abilites are easy to dodge and if she doesn't hit them, you'll feel like youre 1v2 on lane.
Sona
Don't play Aphelios with her and I mean it. There's nothing she can do for you early when you're the weakest and it will feel like you're playing at a disadvantage pre 6.
Soraka
Depends on the Soraka player. If she can position well and heal you up you can become unkillable.
Swain
I usually don't like Swain but he's a big threat to enemy ADCs so you are free to farm as long as he threatens. Go for trades if he lands E.
Tahm Kench
Tahm can be really really good if the enemy has a lot of divers and assassins. He can also be decent into enchanters that play 5 screens away because he can knock them up from far away. He has decent damage too. His ult is a safety net for you late game and can change the fight completely if he manages to save you from a Katarina, Kayn etc.
Taric
Play for late with him . You'll have a pretty safe and passive laning phase. Only go for trades if his stun and shield are off cooldown, or if he hits his stun. His ult is amazing for you late game.
Thresh
Kill potential and strong peel. Thresh is amazing but can be quite underwhelming in the wrong hands.
Vel'Koz
He can buy you time to farm with his poke or extend a lead if you get it but he can't peel for you or help in any other way so I don't like him.
Volibear
He can do a lot by himself and open up space for kills. He's also really tanky and enables dives easily.
Xerath
While he's pretty much the same as Vel, he will hit your wave and ruin the wavestate quite a lot. I don't like this champion in the support position so take those into consideration.
Yuumi
I HATE this spawn of Satan. That being said, she fits Aphelios very well. She's safe to play with as long as you don't make mistakes and her late game is one of the best in the game when it comes to supports.
Zilean
Can be quite strong. He enables you to play aggressively and he can prevent tower dives.

Welcome to my Aphelios guide. I have been in love with this champion ever since he was released. There is something amazing about him and he has a very unique kit for an ADC. He was the beginning of the 200 years meme. I am by no means a challenger or master player. In fact, I peaked D2 in Season 9 but I still believe I have enough experience on this underplayed champion. As you might be aware, Aphelios is sitting on a 45%ish winrate at the moment. This is because Riot wants to keep him that way so he doesn't become a monster in pro play (which he was many times since release). Still, I think he is one of the most rewarding ADCs if played properly and he's a ton of fun. I hope you will enjoy this guide!
NOTE
The guide is still in progress. You are free to look up my builds and explanations. I will go super in-depth with this guide so stay tuned for it.
Update 1: Updated some typos and added/removed a few things. Also added boots to the build paths.
Update 2: Explained the passive ability and set the general look of the guide. This is my first one so it's probably not going to look very pretty. I'm open for suggestions on how I can improve the aesthetic.

BLESSINGS OF THE MOON

The Hitman and the Seer
INNATE:
Aphelios has access to an arsenal of 5 Moonstone Weapons, created by his sister Alune. He equips two weapons at any one time, one as his main weapon and one as his off-hand. Each weapon has a unique basic attack and passive effect. Aphelios begins the game with Calibrum (sniper, gives extra range on autos) as his main weapon and Severum(life gain) in his off-hand, with Gravitum(slow and root), Infernum (AOE flamethrower) , and Crescendum (high attackspeed boomerang that works best at short range) queued in reserve. The queue order can be rearranged based on weapon usage.
INNATE - MOONLIGHT:
Weapons spawn with 50 Moonlight for ammunition, which is consumed on basic attacks, or to cast his abilities. Abilities that cause Aphelios to attack do not cost additional Moonlight on top of their ability cost. Once his main weapon is exhausted of Moonlight, it is moved to the end of the queue and Aphelios assembles his next available weapon over 1 second to equip it from his reserve, with its Q ability being placed on a 1.5-second Cooldown before that time. Aphelios cannot cast Phase during the assembly.
INNATE - WEAPON MASTER:
Aphelios cannot improve his abilities with skill points. He starts the game with Phase and gains access to abilities at level 2 and Moonlight Vigil at level 6, with the latter improving automatically at levels 11 and 16. Instead, Aphelios may spend his skill points to gain AD,AS or Lethality.
Alright let's go through the passive because there's a lot to unpack here. First of all, remember that Aphelios effectively has 2 abilities at any time, 3 if his ult is up. This can be changed to 5 with a certain condition which I will talk about in the gameplay section. He can auto attack with each weapon 50 times, and his abilities take 10 moonlight (ammo in further text) so you have to manage these.
Your available ammo is visible on the unique HUD Aphelios has, as well as on the side of your screen when you drop below 11. Using abilities below 11 will automatically swap the weapon but mind that you can use abilities even if you have less than 10 available. As mentioned in the ability description, you cannot level up any abilities. They scale up with levels. You instead levelup stats such as AD, AS and Lethality.
The way the weapon queue works is simple. The weapon you first spend ammo on goes at the end of the queue. So, for example, if you spend Severum first, and then Calibrum at the start of the game, the queue will look like this:
GRAVITUM INFERNUM CRESCENDUM SEVERUM CALIBRUM
You can rearrange this queue in whichever way you want, the most important thing to remember is that once you spend a weapon, it always goes to the very end of the queue.
The queue that I prefer the most is: Severum+Crescendum > Crescendum+Calibrum > Calibrum+Gravitum > Gravitum+Infernum > Infernum+Severum . Spend left to right, rinse and repeat. Obviously there are multiple combinations but we'll talk about it more later. Also, it's really important to understand that the weapon you're using for actively for autos and abilities is the Main-hand weapon, regardless of which one has more ammo or which one came later. I think that his passive is 60% of what people don't understand about his abilities, so I thought it's quite important to talk about.
Aphelios doesn't have a W (this one is used to switch main and off-hand weapon with Phase) or E ability so let's talk about his weapons and his Qs.
Calibrum
Aphelios gains 100 bonus attack range while Calibrum is his main weapon. Enemies damaged by Calibrum through an ability are marked for 4.5 seconds, revealing them for the duration(does not reveal invisible invisible units!). Aphelios' next basic attack against a marked target uses the current off-hand weapon and has 1800 range, increased missile speed, and a brief cast time that lasts shorter based on Aphelios' proximity to the target.
The empowered attack will consume the marks from all targets, dealing 15 (+ 20% bonus AD) bonus physical damage to the main target for each mark consumed. If Calibrum is the current off-hand weapon, the main weapon is used for the attack instead.
