This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Darius isn't too difficult. Just don't let him pull you. If he does, wait for him to slow you, then use W auto him with your passive, and you run away easily. poke with Q when ever you can. Don't Let him hit your barrels, and you can zone him pretty well. If he gets ahead, don't fight him at all. Once he gets 5 stacks of his passive on you, he is now stronger than you. So avoid extended trades. Once he is 6, you never really wanna trade blows with him. If your gonna get hit by his Q, you take less damage if your next to him, than if your further away and get hit. Late game, your better for team fights. Just kite him, and you win. An Executioners Calling is ok in this match-up.
Diana
Diana cant do anything to you till she hits lvl 6. Just poke and zone her early with Q and barrels. After trinity, do Maw of Malmortius before Ghost Blade.
Ekko
Ekko is probably your biggest counter. He e's in hits you, Q's autos, n runs away. He does a lot of damage if played right. lvl 1, you can poke him with your q, after level one, your better off just farming with q, and keeping barrels up around you in case he try comes in on you. Once he is 6, he can dive you very easily with his ult. Just farm and try not to die too much, and you are better late game than him for team fights. After you finish Trinity, go Mal of Malmortius.
Fiora
Fiora is really strong if she gets ahead. Don't partake in extended trades with her. Her passive which deals true damage and heals her, will shred you. Poke and hit barrels on her. If her passive is facing towards her, you can walk away and it will reset. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. When she uses her ult on you, she will have alot of movement speed and be hard to get away from. But you don't want to fight her with her ult on you. I run when she ults me. Land a barrel on her, and she cant all in you any more. If you have to fight her, try to not let her hit all 4 sides. If she does, she will get a huge Healing circle on the ground. Consider getting an early Executioners Calling.
Garen
Poke with Q, and don't let him Q you. If he lands Q on you, he will E and that is where most of his damage comes from. Zone him with barrels, and don't let him auto your barrels. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Once he is 6, he is a lot like Darius. He gets a lot of damage from his ult, so if he lands Q and a full E on you, his ult will most likely kill you. Again your better late game.
Gnar
Gnar is another hard counter for you. Once he finishes frozen mallet, he can kill you when ever he wants, if your not ahead. Early on, he will auto your barrels, and he will poke you with his q. Keep a barrel behind you, and you can try to poke him with a barrel combo from the bush. Careful when he goes mega, because if you go close enough to poke him with q, he will jump on you and if he's 6, he will stun you into the wall, then stun you again with his W. All you can do is avoid getting hit by his Q, and poke when he goes for CS.
Graves
Graves has a lot of damage. He will push the wave over and over, and you will have to CS under tower. If you can poke, go for it, but be careful. He will dash at you and do a lot of burst. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Get your jungler to gank, and hit a barrel combo on him, and its a free kill. Just remember his burst.
Heimerdinger
Another one that will push for days. after you get sheen, you may be able to take out his turrets with Q. Just farm under turret, and try to avoid his poke. You can use barrels to soften his turrets, then Q them to kill them.
Fizz
Fizz isn't too hard to deal with. He is easy to poke with your Q. Don't let him land his E on you. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Once he gets a few items, and if he avoids your barrel combo, he does have the potential to burst you down. Your W will NOT remove his ult, just the slow.
Dr. Mundo
Just poke with Q, and zone with barrels. He will have to farm with his Q. You can block CS by eating shots from his Q. You will most likely want Mortal reminder this game. You can get Executioner's Calling after Trinity, and it will negate his healing factor.
Illaoi
If she can grab you with her E, then run away immediately. If she kills your ghost, you will take a lot of damage. When you come up to Q, she will try to hit you with her Q. If she ults, run away. Never fight against her in her ult. Again, you can get Executioner's Calling after trinity.
Irelia
Don't stand near low health creeps. She can dash to them, and jump on you, and then she still has another dash. Early on, Poke her when ever possible. And you can poke her with barrels. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. If you die early to her, She can prob kill you over and over. So just don't do anything too risky early on. She gets a big power spike with Sheen and when she finishes Trinity, so keep an eye on her build. Since you both build the same first item, you can gauge your strength with how close you both are to finishing Trinity first. Use your barrels to slow her if she jumps on you. If you can poke her down with out her being able to trade back, you will provide more pressure on the map. Once you have the gold, go ahead and get your Sheen, and TP back. You can keep her in check by landing q's early. She is weakest before 6. When she hits 6 or gets trinity she will prob try to jump on you, so be ready. If you have higher health than her, she can stun you. Always break the stun with your W because it last like 2.5 seconds or something ridiculously long. If she has more health than you, she can only slow you.
Jax
Just poke and zone with Q and Barrels. If he gets next to you, just use your passive auto, and run away. Use W to break the stun. Poke with Q when ever he goes for CS. He is another one that if he gets ahead, your gonna have a hard time. Don't give up an early kill to him, play safe and farm.
Pantheon
Pantheon is really strong against you. His passive shield blocks your Q, and it resets when he stuns you. He will out poke you with his Q and his passive shield. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. However, he is still susceptible to your barrel damage. Your best bet is to play it safe, and just try to farm with Q. You out scale Pantheon tremendously. If you can get ahead with a gank. You can take control in lane by zoning with your barrels. In this match-up, you may want to consider what their AP threats are, and decide if you want to go Sterak's instead.
Shen
Super easy lane. Your goal isn't to kill this guy, its just to out farm him. Killing him is a plus, but you should be satisfied with just poking him out of lane and hitting every CS. When he ults away, push into the tower hard and try to get that first blood tower gold.
Malphite
Malph is just annoying with his passive shield that he gets, and how well armor benefits his kit. You can poke him with Q all day, and farm just fine. Watch for him to hit 6 tho, because he may try to all in you with his ult. If he builds AP, he will deal a surprising amount of damage, and you will want to go Maw second item.
Riven
Riven is very Dangerous. Early on, you can poke her with ease. Use your barrels but always keep one behind you for an escape. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Once she hits lvl 6, Never get too close. Unless she is massively behind, she can still all in you, and burst you down. If you can succsesfully zone her with your barrels, then farming will be easier. But if she is good at taking your barrels out, you will have to stay at least 2 hops away from her. She hops around, so when i say 2 hops, I mean 2 of her Broken Wings. If you can keep the distance, then she will only have one more broken wing, and that takes a lot of damage out of her kit. If she has to use 2 Broken Wings just to get to you, then she wont have the damage to burst you down. If she gets ahead, your in for a long game. Do your best to farm with Q and barrels, and always put a barrel in the lane bushes to check them. Once she is 6 she will always try to utilize the lane bush to ambush you.
Nasus
Pretty easy lane. If you farm better than him, and get items first, your poke will out damage his passive healing. Pretty much just poke when ever possible, and don't miss your cs. When he uses his slow on you, that is when you W. Don't stand in the circle he puts on that ground, as it will reduce your armor and make his Q hurt more.
Akali
Poke with Q, as she is melee. Zone with barrels. Buy pink wards. They are helpful when receiving a gank. Definitely go Maw after Trinity. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Once she hit 6, be careful of her all in. If you miss your barrel on her, good chance she will kill you. She has Healing in her kit, so Executioners Calling would be warranted.
Aatrox
Not even worth putting on here. Poke with Q, and don't stand and trade with him. Get your passive off, proc Thunderlords, and run away. You can Zone him easily with barrels and your poke.
Vladimir
Vlad is really strong right now. You can poke him early, but he will be able to sustain through it with his Q. How ever your Q has a shorter CD early on, so you can out poke him. When he has A red bar under his health, don't go near him. His next Q while that is ticking down, will hit a lot harder than the other ones. When he charges up his E, try not to get hit by it, as it does do a lot of damage and has a significant slow on it. Go Maw second item, maybe even some early MR, and Get an early Executioners Calling too. Like right after you finish Sheen you can get it. Once you have Maw, Trinity and and Ex Call, you will have a much easier time dealing with him. His ult also heals him once the damage proc's on you, so keep that in mind when fighting him. Late game, he will want your team to be grouped, so he can get a 5 man ult, E and pool into every one for max damage. Use your barrels and ult to zone off the rest of his team, and you should be able to take him out.
Cho'Gath
Cho'gath is a pain. He has alot of sustain, and so much CC. Poke him early, and do your best to not stand still. Make it hard for him to land rupture on you. If he does land rupture, don't W right away. Wait to be back on the ground or you will still be slowed. So you want to just W the slow after the rupture. His ult Eats you for a lot of damage, so Be careful about fighting him post 6 in close quarters with low health.
Jarvan IV
J4 isn't too difficult to deal with. He has the ability to dodge your Barrel and engage on your hard. His E,Q combo moves him, so if your trying to land a barrel combo on him at the same time he E'Qs into you, there's a good chance your damage wont hit and he will land a knock up on you. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. He is really strong if he gets ahead, just poke and avoid his E Q combo and you should be fine. Once he is 6, watch for ganks. Especially if Flash is on CD. If it is, and your not A LOT stronger than him, your locked down and dead. His Q reduces your armor, so try not to trade after he hits it on you. If he is pretty far ahead of you, he has the capability to one shot you, so tread carefully. And don't lose early.
Malzahar
This land isn't too difficult. You probably wont be able to kill Malz later on, just cus he pushes so hard. But you can get out of his cc very easily, and passive takes about 20 seconds of not taking damage to refresh. Poke till your hearts content early. If voidlings are out, you have 2 options. Run, or kill them. They spawn every time they kill a minion, or attack a champion. If you can kill them before they kill the minion, then no more will spawn. They will Focus any one who has Maleficent Visions on them, or is being ulted by him. Once he has Rylai's Crystal Scepter, don't let him touch you. You will be perma-slowed and unless you kill the Voidlings, you wont get away.
Maokai
Another pretty easy lane. A melee champ you can poke with Q, and you can W out of his snare. When his ult is up, it reduces damage of everyone inside of it. He has alot of healing aswell, so a Executioners Calling wouldn't be a bad purchase early.
Sion
Early on, you can poke him any time he try's to CS. If he is smart, he will try to stay back early and farm from range. Once he's got his full kit and some items, he is a real pain to deal with. Unlimited cc, and so much base damage. Once you cant poke him anymore, just farm with q, and do your best to clear wave's. He will perma push you once you cant fight him straight up any more. Just do your best to last hit under tower, and if there is ever more than just him there, you may have to use your ult to help clear the wave so they don't get the turret. If you don't have ult and no one else coming to help, you may just have to give up turret. Stay safe, don't die too much, and farm. You still can do more in a team fight than Sion can.
Wukong
Wukong does a surprising amount of damage. If he is good, he will probably play really aggro to start. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. He can jump on you so only poke him when his jump is down. When ever his body just stops, its probably his decoy. Try to keep track of when he used it, so he cant fake you out by just standing still and you think its his decoy. Thats a common trick among Wukong players. So in this lane, you will have to focus farming, and wait for ganks. Even when getting a gank, careful cus Wu still has the power to tear you up probably. When it comes to teamfights, careful about grouping with your team. If you don't know where Wu is, theres a good chance hes about to jump on your team and knock everyone up. When you see him or think he is going in, run away, and try to set up barrels to catch his team trying to fallow up with him. also, utilize your ult in this situation to try and deter there team from fallowing up.
Renekton
This gator is a real pain in the boot. He can out trade you, with his full combo, he can out sustain you with his Q, and he can dodge your barrels with ease. Plus he has an ult that makes him even more of a beast. Poke him level one and 2, careful for his level 3. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Once he gets a lead on you, he will snowball hard. You cant fight him anymore once he gets a kill or 2 ahead of you. Just try to farm your best, and soften the wave before it gets to your turret so you can clear it with a barrel, so he cant dive you. Late game he is more of a tank, and not as threatening.
Yasuo
The thing with Yasuo is all his dashes. Very hard to land a barrel on, unless you can predict where hes going. Even then, he sticks to you and out damages your auto's by a ton. All you can really do is have a barrel set up behind you, and if he tries to dash to you, you can use the barrel to slow n get away from him. Poke him level one but once he hits level 2, he can be in your face. Pay attention to if they have Ignite or TP, this is very important early on to notice. Your barrel combo will go through his wind wall, so keep that in mind. Late game, you scale better, and have more presents in team fights.
Rumble
Rumble is a pretty good pick against you. He pushes a lot and does tons of damage. Especially once he gets some items. It's hard to poke him, because he can just Q you for damage, and E you to slow, so you take even more damage. Your best bet is to farm with Q. Rumble has a special mechanic. When ever he uses an ability, he gains heat. once he is over 50% heat, his abilities are stronger. Once he gets max heat, he Over heats. During this time, he can not cast spells, other than an E that was used to put him into over heat. How ever his auto attacks do more damage during this time too. If he ever over heats in lane, that's your chance to poke him. Rumble scales pretty good into the late game also. You want to go Maw second item. When it comes to Baron and dragon control, Rumble offers almost as much as you. His ult does a lot of damage, and slows. It is a great zoning tool, just like yours. You offer a little more when it comes to team fights, but just try to play smart.
Poppy
Poppy isn't too difficult an opponent. Early on, poke her down with Q. Once she gets enough items, she will be a bit tougher to deal with. She runs at you and tackles you, if it is into a wall, you are stunned. That's when you can W. When she puts the gold thing on the ground, don't stay in it. You will take a good amount of damage. Her passive lets her throw her shield at ranged every like 15 seconds or something. If its kills what it is thrown at, it goes back to her and gives her a shield. If it doesn't kill anything, it lands randomly on the ground. If you walk over it, it goes away. If she walks over it, she gets a shield. Her ult can knock any one hit back towards there nexus. It can also knock you straight up in the air if she doesn't cast it long. You bring a lot more to the table when it comes to team fighting. So just farm up, and carry the late game.
Swain
With swain, just don't stand in his birds circle. That will do a decent amount of damage, and make it easier for him to hit his other abilities. His E amplifies damage done to you, so if he puts that on you, run away. You can poke him down, but just be weary of his snare teamed with a gank. Keep your Orange ready. Thing is, once he gets Ryla's if you have to W his snare, good chance he already has you perma-slowed. He is pretty good in team fights as well. you can get Executioners Calling after Sheen here. Once he is 6, his healing will be an issue.
Hello! I am a Plat-Gold level player. I would consider GP to be my main. I started playing him a little after the beginning of the LCS playoffs just after the Juggernaut patch in 2015. Gangplank and Mordekaiser were always banned or played, and when they were played, they usually won. Because of this, I decided to dedicate a significant amount of time to practicing both. Both eventually did receive nurfs, but GP's weren't very significant to his game play. Since those days, GP has received a ton of nurfs. Yet, he is still one of the best champs in the game, and is still sought after in Professional play. When I started playing GP, I just copied what the pro's were doing, and I was climbing. At the time, I was Silver 3. I had been fluctuating between Silver and Gold, and wanted to make a run to get back to gold before seasons end. I picked up GP, and after a bit of practice, with in weeks I was able to get back to gold. I made it just in time to get the end of season rewards. In the fallowing weeks after the season ended, I was able to carry all the way up to Platinum. I was able to get as high as Platinum 3.
So if you have stayed with me this long, I Thank you. I want to start taking professional builds that are used in LCS/LCK, and create a guide for us common folk to use. This GP one will be my first. When I get a better computer, and am able to record, I will post videos that will show some things to better teach the ways of the King of the Pirates!
Pros / Cons
Pros / Cons
Pros
+ Best late game Champion + Good vs most match-ups + Can 1v9 if mastered + He's the King of the Pirates!!
Gp has probably the best late game in League. It is very exciting to hit a barrel on a whole team, then ult right after, and watch all the health melt away.
Cons
- Weak early game - Has popular "Hard Counters" - Difficult to master - Hasn't found the One Piece D:
The biggest danger with GP is the lane phase. Gotta stay safe and watch for ganks. Farming up is the most important part. If your doing well, with the right attitude, any sort of comeback is possible.
Ive looked at quite a few Korean pages as well as NA pages from the pros, and ive found a mix. 12-18-0 is the most common among Koreans. If you are having trouble surviving laneing phase, you can go 0-18-12. The best masteries this route are Recovery , Tough Skin , Veteran's Scars , and for lower CD on TP and flash, Insight . This will be a bigger help going through the lane phase. And thats the thing with GP, if you can get through laneing phase, you can carry the rest of the game. Match ups like a Nasus or Shen that just wants to farm anyway, you definitely wanna go 12-18-0 page.
Skill Sequence
Skill Sequence
Q Parrrley is always first, but don't put your point in till laning is about to begin. So if you get invaded on, and you get cc'd, you can W Remove Scurvy if needed. For the second ability, if there's no risk of CC you can take E Powder Keg and start zoning with barrels. I like to take W second most of the time, just to have the sustain from trades if needed. That really just depends on your play style tho.
Barrel Mechanics
The tick time is really slow at first, after level 6 it ticks a little faster, and after level 13, it ticks real quick. This is when you can just pull up a barrel, and another in rapid succession, and Q immediately to make a barrel chain. That is how you poke with GP pretty much. When using a barrel for only its movement speed buff, place the barrel farthest away from you as you run. If your still under 6, you will have to q the barrel after you pass it. If your after 6, it will tick to one just as you get to it. Then you can auto it and keep running.
The Triple Barrel Combo
The triple barrel combo is a very useful tool early on. This is because you can rapidly put out barrels with out waiting for the tick time. Here is a scenario. Your receiving a gank and you need to hit a barrel on the enemy laner to apply the slow and make the gank successful. You have one barrel set up. Its already at one tick. You set up a second one, Q the first one, and quickly place a third one connected to the second one. They are caught off guard, and you run up with your movement speed, auto them and gain more movement speed, and its a sure kill with the gankers help at this point. This is probably the hardest mechanic to pull off when it comes to GP. And even if your barrel doesn't hit, it feels awesome when ever you make the triple barrel combo go off. Later on, this is really helpful for team fights. If you have a barrel in the fog of war, you set up one connected to it, Q the first one, and place another. Its a sure way to get your barrel combo off with out there ranged champions interfering.
Lane Phase
Lane Phase
So for lane phase, early on you will want to poke with your Q, and CS with your auto's. You want to poke with your Q to make use of the bandit mastery. At ranks 1-5, your Q only only gives 2,3,4,5,6 bonus gold for killing a creep with it. However, if you use your Q on the enemy early on, your getting 10 bonus gold instead. So its better. How ever, getting the cs is more important than the poke. So if you cant poke safely, just farm with q instead. Once you hit lvl 6, start looking around the map for counter ganks and just team support in general with Cannon Barrage. If there is risk of an early tower going down with a big wave, don't be afraid to use your ult to clear the tower of minions. The first blood gold for tower is worth your ult CD.
After sheen buy Once you get your sheen, you can really hurt your enemy laner with Q poke. I like to keep a barrel behind myself to help if I'm getting ganked. The trade i usually do, is i set up a barrel combo, and auto the barrel to hit them, then q them, and auto and run away. You get movement speed from your passive, and from hitting the barrel. This will also proc Thunderlord's Decree , so its a good trade to use against most match-ups. Also I like to keep a barrel in a bush, just in case. Barrels are a really good tool for Zoning if your ahead. Once you have Trinity Force by around 12 mins, the caster minions will be taken out by one barrel.
Advanced CS'ing
If you have to last hit under tower, you let the tower hit each of the melee creeps twice, then one auto will kill them. For the caster minions, there is a strategy to get all 3. So what you do is you place a barrel, and auto one of the minions that the tower is not attacking, after the tower completes its attack on the first caster minion, you can Q your barrel. That will kill the first 2 creeps, then you can auto the last one, and you have secured all the creeps. If you have time between melee creeps, you can prep the range creeps with one auto each. Big thing to keep in mind is that your barrel will proc the passive Trial By Fire for the bonus gold on creeps. So if your pushing the wave, you can auto the melee creeps a few times each to try n take em down with one barrel. Usually you will always have to auto the melee's once each at least to have them die with the barrel.
Items
Items
Every single game that GP is featured in LCS right now, these are the items he builds. It use to be the crit build, but with Trinity having crit taken away from it, the crit build is just too expensive and it takes longer to hit your power spike. If you go the crit build route, you have to get a zeal item, for the 30% crit, other wise your only at 40%.
With this armor pen build, you get more damage earlier, and for less gold. It also has alot of synergy with the new Trinity force better than the crit build does now. As far as powering up your ultimate goes, You want to first get Death's Daughter for the true damage. Next, Fire At Will for the faster barrage. And save Raise Morale for last in most cases.
Build path
So after you finish Trinity Force, next time you go B you want to start Youmuu's Ghostblade if you can. An easy way to know what to buy when only getting pieces of items, is Survivability<Damage<Armor pen<CDR. Pretty much if you B with 1100 gold, get Serrated Dirk over Caulfield's Warhammer, and if your against an AP, consider rushing Maw of Malmortius before ghostblade. If your going Maw, then you want to get Hexdrinker before the Dirk. If you don't need the shield right away, go Ghostblade.
If you don't need the shield from Sterak's Gage, and they don't have much AP, you can go Infinity Edge. That will offer a crit chance, and more damage. If your having trouble staying alive, keep your Sterak's or Maw, and get a Guardian Angel instead of the Duskblade of Draktharr.
Item Sequence
Ionian Boots of Lucidity900
Trinity Force3333
Youmuu's Ghostblade2800
Maw of Malmortius3100
Duskblade of Draktharr3100
Lord Dominik's Regards3100
Team Work
Team Work
So for team fights, it is really cut and dry. Just stay with your team, and try to land a barrel combo on a squishy enemy champion. Because of the movement speed you get with your barrels, you can run up and back with out getting caught usually. Try to utilize the fog of war for barrels, like brush and behind walls.
Positioning
You pretty much want to play like an ADC or Mage. Stay in the back line, unless you can safely move closer. Your main objective is to hit a squishy target with your barrels. However, with this build, even the tanks will take significant damage from the barrels. Always remember, a Q Parrrley onto your barrel Powder Keg will do more damage than an auto to the barrel, or a Q directly to the enemy. Your Q does do a lot of damage. So if you don't have barrels, or you need to build some up to make a chain, go ahead and poke with the Q. Especially the squishes.
Summary
Summary
GP is in my eyes, the best Champion for carrying in League of Legends at the current time. If mastered of course. If mastered, any champion can offer this, but GP especially. I will be trying to update the match-ups more, but hopefully this will help you start to carry some of your games. Let me know about any feedback on the guide, positive or negative. Both are welcome. This is my first real in depth one, and i will be trying to add stuff as often as i can. But let me know what you think, and Enjoy the grind. Cy@
