The guide has been updated so the in guide information about masteries reflects season 4. I'm not really going to toy with the laning behavior section because that's pretty much all the same, only had to remove the bit about Oracle's Elixir, RIP.

The starting items will likely be changed come S4, I'm pretty sure one can now buy a pot with a Dblade. But yea, currently it's an unsafe start. I use it because I mostly pick Varus into very low range characters that i can auto attack harass.
as for Hpen quints, they are better better than early AP on Varus. AD quints is the alternative

OTG, I would personally not start doran's without lifesteal quints. Hybrid pen marks are fine, but I somewhat doubt the effectiveness of quints.

Just a few points I'll address:

The guide is indeed designed for magical damage, however, as stated within the guide; Varus will still end up dealing roughly 50% of his damage in physical due to having to auo attack to get anything done, as well as using his physical damage abilities to even trigger his magical damage. This is the reason i use hybrid penetration over magic pen. The point in the runes saying attack damage instead of Hpen is a typo as I just changed which runes were being used. My bad.

The disclaimer; I wrote it so people don't get pissy with me about AP Varus sucking for ranked. They did that last time.

I did not claim I was the first person to do it. I said I felt like the first, because I was the first person to write a guide about it here. (I'm 99% sure about that, but we'd have to check old guide archives to find that out.) I don't think it's pretentious to express pride about something you feel like no one appreciate that only you seem to do. Hipster maybe, pretentious, I'm unsure.

Random spaces: Im aware they look random at glance but when Im coding things I tend to get OCD if everything doesn't have a certain number of spaces and yadda yadda I'm bat**** crazy.

Magic Pen: Typo, needs changed. The guide previously used Attack damage runes, hence the urging the readers to rush magic pen.


items section: That text isn't centered other than the headers.

Bottom lane: I do say that the guide is intended for mid lane. I guess I said absolutely nothing about bottom lane other than "this is not a Marksman guide". Thank you for the suggestion to clarify that. ;p

Gameplay: There are tips and tricks. is that not enough on how to use the abilities? :[ The gameplay section could use more info and polishing and Im working on matchups and lane behavior.
