The only unbeatable matchup, His AOE melee range E slows your attack speed to 0 pretty much making your combo a tad bit slower and harder to do if not practiced, watch out for the cheese wheel Q in lane. pay attention to the damage, it would be very troll of him to max it in lane. since putting 1-2 points into E will make your laning 5x easier. His passive cooldown starts at 8/7/6 every 6 levels lvl 1-7-13.
That basically doubles his Armor, taking his passive shield down before re-engaging would be the most optimal way to try and all in him.
Kled
Very difficult matchup, Main job is to outscale, start Doran's Shield, Beware his Q does go through Minions. and if it pulls it gives 40% healing reduction and insane damage. At level 2, every Kled will Level W, but not until they enter a fight. His blade will light up orange and in the next 4 attacks will be different and Very rough. This Will ALWAYS be active and can not be turned off. if you’re wanting to All in or go for trades. this ability MUST be on cooldown (13s - 7s depending on points in ability) once again. in early game you need the wave to be on Your side of the map, you want to do this because he will be unable to run you down long enough to make the trade longer, he will be more gank-able. and you will be safe under your tower.
Vayne
Very cringe and difficult matchup, it's ranged. You will get poked down, and your champion has no sustain. you will have to give up the first 3 cs but make sure to stay in exp range. theoretically you can't touch vayne in lane, if you are going for a trade (Why would you) make sure to not use E first as an engaging tool.
sit under the tower till 5 or 6 and all in after condemn(E) is down. Start Dorans Shield (With second wind in secondary runes) and build Eclipse and preferably hydra 2nd, Bait or waste E and try and 1 shot her before she outscales you entirely. If you notice she's maxing W, Buy lucidity boots, if she's not. Get steelcaps.
she's still very squishy, be careful of her botrk power spike and rush edge of night 3rd item to deny her E ever working on you, use your abilities very carefully and preferably after she used Q Tumble.
Dr. Mundo
Long sword 3 pots: another cringe matchup where you get super outscaled. And it will be very very boring, try to Cheese level 1 from a bush. Chip at him with short sharp trades and try to deny him farm by E'ing in the way of his cleavers when he goes to last hit. Look at buying early healing reduction. Does outscale you, in mid game or late you will need black cleaver to stand a chance. and eventually he will just outscale you.
Yorick
: Look to trade level 1, you beat him hard. Healing reduction is good here after maybe second base. If you dodge his 'E' (the weird thing he throws at you that makes his creeps jump on you) you can trade freely. This matchup is similar to Illaoi in that you can fight if you dodge his E, if not wait it out. Try not to fight when his maiden is up, look to kill it before all-inning him. You should just 1 shot him when he's 50% HP, but he scales pretty well. You can 3Q out of his box ability, dont let him get your tower, he DEMOLISHES towers and even if you score a kill he can come back from tower plates.
Volibear
dorans shield is hilarious here, since his passive will always heal you while he is attacking minions, even if you lose a trade u will be able to heal it back up eventually. Do not get hit by his W2 as this heals a lot and deals extra damage. Don't be scared of level 1 and try to apply pressure from here, he wins level 2 and 3. Be careful of him layering his W on to his Q. The W shield and damage auto-win him the trade. Your ult is stronger than his, try ignite here as the healing cut is very important
Quinn
Quinn is just a pain for Riven overall. A perfect counter in that if you engage she just blinds you and vaults off you. Her poke with her passive is annoying too. I recommend Doran’s Shield, second wind and ability haste shard Instead of AD for this matchup (in the 3rd rune tree). Try to go even in farm then Q juggle/dance and all in at level 6. You gain a combat ult whereas hers is just a roaming ult. You can also try to CC her then get behind her so her escape path is cut off as she’ll vault back toward your tower instead of her own. Ping your team if she’s missing post level 6, she loves to roam. AND RUSH STEELCAPS
Sett
: start doran’s blade and use bone plating in the 2nd tree. Sett wins this matchup straight up, so it's up to you to short trade with him. Q, auto, W auto then EQ away immediately as Sett will try to E you. Save at least one mobility spell to dodge his W damage and don't overcommit on trades. Learning to Q dance through someone is a MUST for this matchup. and try to bait E by Spacing correctly in and out of the range
Darius
dorans blade nimbus cloak or bone plating, your choice, but its very cheesy matchup. If he takes ghost/ignite you can't win an all-in unless he misses his E. Same principle as Fiora, short trades but if he hits his E run. If he has TP this lane is much easier. E or Q inside his Q to stop healing. Don't be baited with level 1.
Do not dare to ever fight darius level 1. All-in when he's 50% at level 6 and does not have bone plating.
Flashing into the inner part of his Q is worth it. do not get ****ing hit by it or you insta lose the fight.
Poppy
Doran’s Shield is recommended here. A very difficult matchup, but not impossible. Do not get hit by Q, it’s a very easy spell to dodge by even just clicking without abilities. Try to shield her passive ranged attack & step on the buckler on the ground to stop it from giving her a shield. Space away from walls as to deny her stun & don’t cast Q/E while her field is up or you’ll get grounded. Trade hard at level 1, and short sharp trades beyond this. Level 6 is where you look to fight as Poppy’s ult isn’t really a combat ult, but yours is therefore giving you damage while she stays the same mostly. Don’t try to cancel the channel of her ult, focus on dodging it as it’s quite easy to dodge. Beware her dive setup for her jungler, try to thin the wave often and stay healthy, in late game she will get to a point where she will kill you just by using her base damage. soo yeah. good ****ing luck mf
Shen
Short trades work most effectively against Shen. start doran’s blade or long sword 3 pots. If you trade too long he'll use his field to block your autos. His only real threat is using his Q over the wave to grasp auto you, or using his Q after you're taunted. Make sure you manage your wave correctly post 6 so you can punish him if he ults bot. Always chase him if he's walking away and there's a fight he wants to ult to. You can break his ult channel with 3Q or W.
Lillia
: she becomes quite annoying if she's building tank. start dorans blade to cheese level 1, you Absolutely demolish her pre 6, its Lillia i would assume you’ll be getting camped due to her incredible gank set up. just like darius, dodge inside her Q and dash away from the middle point of W. and later build serylda's Grudge
Camille
Camille outscales Riven so make the most of the lane phase. start doran’s blade, Bait her passive/break bone plating then look for short trades. Her E can be broken by W in the first half and your third Q in the second half. Riven's ult beats Camille's at 6, but the lane is more so in your favor. Use mobility spells to dodge W. Avoid trading level 1 until her passive shield/boneplating is down
Renekton
this matchup is one of Riven's hardest., start dorans blade and try to cheese level 1, you're stronger at that point. He has all the tools necessary to highlight Riven's weaknesses. Try to E his Q damage now, take bone plating to tank his W. If you can stop him from building Fury by controlling the wave you can win. Abuse long E cooldown.
Rumble
start dorans shield, it's a really cancerous matchup but if you can q-w-AA then e out I imagine you can whittle him down slowly without eating too much damage from him. The window between his q's isn't long but you can still trade pretty well with him if you do it quickly. Rumble is really weak early game so if you grab an advantage against him. be very careful of his Heat meter below his HP. that **** almost triples his damage
Urgot
start dorans shield, you will get poked down to earth When trading, try to stick to one side of Urgot as his machine gun legs proc on all sides. Avoid his E with your E, they'll usually cast it when you Q toward them so be ready to predict. If you get flung by E he can easily 1 shot you, so be very careful. A tricky matchup but not unwinnable, just be sure to do small trades then all in at 6
Kennen
make sure you get legend tenacity, second wind and unflinching, you dont have alot of kill pressure, trade/all in whenever his E is down and on cooldown. and dodge his Q, he will mainly throw it whenever you’re going for a CS. (count down his E cooldown when he uses it, only source of all in potential)
Tryndamere
You need to be aggressive since level one. dorans blade, BE VERY CAREFUL with trading while he has his rage. The RNG on crit will make you lose a trade. You have a chance until level 5. At level 6 Trynda with Lethal Tempo + Ghost + Last Stand is really broken. He can dive you at level 6 so be careful. A little trick is to dash in the opposite direction he dashes.
and to be fair, the experimental Phase rush riven could work, but not optimal.
Illaoi
Dodge her E, win the lane. That's all there is to it. If she misses her E you can hard trade, if she hits it you lose. Riven has the mobility to deal with this matchup and also outscales. Try not to let her 1 shot the wave with Q or you're just going to be farming under tower dodging her E for the next 10 minutes.
Vladimir
This matchup used to be free, but with the introduction of phase rush, Vlad now has all the tools necessary to keep away from Riven until he can't outheal her damage. Get early healing reduction, anticipate his Q's with your E and farm until 2/3 items where Riven can win hard all ins with Deaths Dance and Maw.
Fiora
: Riven can win this matchup but if the Fiora gets 1 kill, the game may be over for you. She scales much harder than Riven and can still outplay even if you're a kill or two ahead. Rush executioners and combo inconsistently to prevent her from W'ing you. Short trades, Q auto W auto E away. Fiora has to predict your W to stun you, but can read your 3rd Q, so make sure if you're going to 3Q onto her, your E is up to dodge her W or else you'll hard lose the trade. Riven basically loses every fight Fiora hits her W in, stun or not. The auto attack speed slow is too strong. If you can manage to land a 3Q on her, she can't w while knocked up, so combo this with your W immediately, do not try and coinflip the auto in before W.
Jax
Start dorans shield, level one bait E while taking minions with Q1 and autos. knock up before it ends, making his e whiff, Make sure the lane is always on your side. if you accidentally shove a wave. if you take one trade or overstep you either lose a massive trade or get ran down and completely murdered. Riven can safe trade at level 3. Lead with Q, auto, W, auto and disengage. Jax will either take the trade or Q and E on you, which you can just E the damage away or look to all in. After his E is down, Jax loses really hard. Look to build advantages early, Jax wins hard with items.
Nasus
: Level 1, you need to assert pressure by walking up to him and forcing him to last hit with spirit fire. Don't attack him; the aoe from your Q will push the wave into him. Because spirit fire(E) is aoe, it'll push the wave to your tower. From here, setup a freeze and hard trade on him when he tries to Q the wave, or just deny him stacks. If he's low on stacks at level 6, Riven just wins...but if his CS is even with yours, you're in trouble. The reason pushing the wave into him is bad, is not only can he free stack under the tower, his passive also heals him a lot so you'll never have kill pressure. He's also safe from ganks and is quite hard to dive. A lot of Riven players think this matchup is free, but it's really easy to let Nasus loose if played incorrectly. He'll outscale you around 2-3 items regardless of kills unless you're like 10-0.
Wukong
: Start dorans shield and get bone plating to reduce damage of his E auto Q combo. Wukong wins level 1 with E start. Look for short sharp trades, then all in when he's 40/50%. I think Riven's level 6 is better for 1v1 fighting, but if you fall behind the game is probably over for you. Try to E his Q or E damage.
Garen
Riven wins level 1, don't be scared to trade into him after he's Q'd you.
After lvl 5 garen if he is maxing Q he will out damage your shield. look Short trades, Q AA W E away, try and bait W. Garen scales really hard now with his new itemisation, try to get a lead in lane.
Singed
FOCUS ON CS.
Singed being a funny cringe walking animal, he will perma fling you every time you try and trade, keep your abilities up. you are able to catch up to him unless he has 1,2 items with full boots. you can also just completely dumpster him when he hits 45 or 50% HP. and remember if you get flinged into the ***juice on the floor, you’re grounded for 12 years. that insta kills you, if jungler is nearby or you lose the trade
Akali
start dorans shield with either sorcery or Resolve. E either her Q or Q empowered auto, try and bait her W/E, both spells have long cooldowns, then all-in with your next rotation. Don't waste spells while she's in the shroud, let her come to you. (pls nerf akali)
Maokai
We win early but he becomes hard. A lot of disengage, lots of damage once he starts scaling and a lot of sustain. Be careful as he's really good at setting up ganks. He can cancel your 3Q with his Q and dodge our ulti with his W. use your abilities slowly. you will need black cleaver after early game
Ornn
The main thing with this matchup is to E his bellows breath damage or the brittle auto. The bulk of his damage comes from this. Anticipate Q placements in wave and care he doesn't E onto his Q for a stun, it gives him a free brittle auto. Start Dorans shield always, you can look to kill after first base/before first base. After he buys armor it'll be a bit harder.
Kayle
: obvs her early is garbage, becareful level 1 it actually can be stronger than you if she has ghost to run you down, she should take bone plating so proc that with 3rd q before trading. then Absolutely bully her into oblivion, after 5 deaths. killing her legit doesnt matter. just freeze the wave and zone her off exp, or build a slow push. dive her with a jungler. do not let her Touch Exp. ever again
Sion
Make sure to trade level 1, every time. do your combos in a way where you are able to break his Q. it goes on lower cooldown than usual but you will never get hit by it. build black cleaver and rush at least tier 1 boots. if he goes lethality with phase rush. RUSH Cooldown reduction. cant exactly say if you need lucidity or Steelcaps. depends in your personal game
Teemo
: If the Teemo has good spacing this can be tricky. Look to fight past 30% CDR items . If he blinds you, just walk next to him until it wears off, or better yet save your E/W for that so he doesn't get free damage while you're blinded. Edge of Night is good into this matchup as you can walk through shrooms or eat a blind with the passive. take really short trades and make sure you have E to disengage.
Irelia
With botrk buffs I think this matchup is more Irelia favored. Riven can get outplayed pretty easily now and Irelia's first spike is a lot cheaper than it used to be. Aggress level 1 if she started E but be careful to not overtrade, if she gets her passive up she hard wins. Use your E to dodge her E. make sure to not get absolutely ********ed when she hits botrk. you must rush steel caps and fight really slowly. you can all in whenever she's below 50% due to her W block damage. dont use all of your abilities at once or.. you get ****ed, but this is still a really skill dependent matchup.. soo be good :)
Aatrox
Riven has all the tools necessary to dodge Aatrox's spells/mitigate his damage. start dorans blade. absolutely rape him before He hits lvl 4. At level 4 he puts two points in Q. which has a bigger powerspike than your level 4. until that he isn't a champion more like a minion. especially when Her high mobility ensures escape from his W. Try to take short trades into him, once conqueror kicks in his healing will outheal a lot of your damage early. Chip down to 50% HP then all in with ult.
Cho'Gath
he has one of the best passives that a riven wish could have. every unit he kills he heals X amount of HP. fantastic sustain in lane. but you have infinite mobility, you won't ever get hit by anything, get black cleaver and just auto win. be really careful when you can get eaten. below 370 hp. level 1 R should be able to just eat you
Gnar
most gnars are not smart enough to remember that their Jump (e) ability is on a 20+ second cooldown. abuse that fact and murder him. if his spacing is good, he will **** you up quite hard but. its honestly still easy to win since your mobility and damage is simply higher.
Gangplank
personally i start dorans blade and E level 1. but it's better and more optimal if you start E level one with dorans shield, you’re able to absolutely dumpster him, make sure his sword isn't flaming. That means his passive is down. if you have good timing you can troll him by taking his barrels if he spawned it on top of you. but get a serrated dirk. and just kill him. it's just that easy. nothing really technical. waste his W. dive and look out if he has a stopwatch from runes
Sylas
you have simply too much mobility for him to ever land his 2nd part of Q or E chain. get executioners after the first or 2nd back. then just murder him. your ulti is simply far stronger than what he will ever get from your ulti. you can take long trades just make sure his kingslayer(W) does not come back in time.
Yone
be careful lvl 1 and 2, after that bully him back to mid lane that little f**. do not let him stack lethal tempo, take short trades and if he is 50 or 60% HP. you can just 2 shot him. He will outscale you tho. but youre able to still outplay him even with full build
Yasuo
literally Yone matchup. but 10x easier. He can't run away from you when you stun him on top of you. you can take any trade you like. just ****ing demolish him. ravenous hydra really ****s him especially if he walks up to a minion. you can take your minion and proc his shield
Yuumi
We all just love yuumi, she can always keep up with our mobility and is just.. yuumi

there is no actual reason for guides to have this section, but i will just List Information that you already should know if you're playing Riven.
So The abilities
Passive: Every ability Gives you 1 charge of extra damage on your next auto attack
works like a sheen without cooldowns, you can store up to 3 charges at once.
Q: Dash/slashes 3 times in a direction dealing damage, the third dash has a longer animation
but Gives a knock up of 0.5s and knocking them back 75 units.
(For reference, a champion moves for example 350 units pers second,
another example nidalee Q is 1500 Unit range)
Fact: between every cast of Q she HAS to wait 0.315s (this cannot be changed)
W: Cast time Attack That AOE Stuns for 0.75s and dealing damage
E: Dash in any direction, get a shield that lasts for 1.5 seconds
R: give your sword an erection, Gain an extra 75 Unit range on abilities( Q, W) and auto attacks.
Gain 20% of Your BONUS AD
After 0.5s Can recast to use wind-Slash in large Cone type hitbox dealing missing health damage 0% - 200% Extra damage depending on enemy HP
if the opponent is below 25% Hp The damage will be maximum and won’t change.
Mechanics cuz you're faker
COOL, RIVEN MECHANICS UP NEXT.
Basic combos:
-The Normal Combo: AA-Q-AA-Q-AA-Q
-The Fast Combo: AA-Q-MC-AA-Q-MC-AA-Q
Short Trades: Q-W-AA-E
Doublecast Combo #1: E-AA - WQ
Doublecast Combo #2: E - F -AA-WQ
Doublecast Combo #3: E-R1 - F - AA-WQ
Doublecast Combo #4: E-R1 - F-AA-WQ - AA-R2Q
Riven Can cancel the animation of her Auto attacks with All her abilities.
Optimal Riven Will use An auto attack between each ability used
If not more
The Fast combo, which is your #1 used combo in every fight involves using movement command
Pressing the right mouse click on the ground.
Without that normal combo would be 20-30% slower than the Fast combo.
(This changes depending on your ping and mechanical skill, If on 7ping in kr. your fast combo will be almost 20/30% quicker)
Riven Animation Cancels
Canceling Ultimate: E + R1-
Canceling Ultimate: R1 + W
More Cancel Stuff: R1 + E + R2 + Q-
More Cancel Stuff: E + Hydra + WQ-
More Cancel Stuff: E + R1 + WQ-
Q Cooldown Can Be Canceled: Q + Wait - Q - Wait - Q-
Riven Can Cancel most of her abilities With R1 and R2.
Rivens pointless animation of lifting her hand and stunning you into a place while the animation goes through is quite time wasting and inefficient And can be reacted to by a sharp opponent.
The super advanced combos can be used for style (most of the time)
but also can be used For deleting an opponent (like a tryndamere/kayle/ with ult or Jayce with E)
Certain combos are made for certain situations
Skins (They matter)
RIVEN SKINS
(YES THEY AFFECT THE GAME, THIS IS IMPORTANT)
There's special reasons why you would change your skin, or own multiple of them
so let's break it down
I will make a tier list of my own
For Looks And styles
(If we ignore in game mechanics and animations)
Now SERIOUSLY
Riven skins highly affect your combos and The Smoothness of your animation cancels and so on
It seriously does affect your gameplay.
This tier list is all about Which skin is Most smooth and most Pay to win (in a way)
Yes, project Riven is by far the smoothest in My experience and opinion
and Dawn bringer riven is Right next to her
Redeemed riven is one of my favorite skins but So cancerous to play, Arcade and redeemed are on the same level of GARBAGE in terms of animations and smoothness
