All you need to know
Lane phase
Maokai is pretty weak early game so you have to play safe. Since you are going to build ap items you can't jump in like normal maokai would. Make sure to keep the bushes filled with your sapling so the your opponents can not make use of them. Also throw saplings in the bushes near the river to keep the enemy jungler out. Before you have lost chapter you will go out of mana quickly, so be careful.
Mid and late game
This is where you get really annoying for the enemies. In theory ap Maokai support is simple. Throw your sapling is as many bushes as you can. This will make it very hard for the enemy to have any objective control. As soon as they get hit by a sapling they will lose around 40% hp when you are not behind. You will have enough mana so every time you E is off cooldown, throw another sapling. The saplings can't be targeted like Teemo shrooms, so it takes ages to deal with them.
Only use your Q and E for a follow up on one of your teammates' engages. Rarely you can be the one that engages because you die so quickly. Keep throwing sapplings and you will top the damage charts in no time.
