Vi: A guide to boxing on the rift

By OOBLEXX
Introduction
Hello. I am a casual player that has been having an absolute blast with Vi mid for the past couple of years and I thought I'd make a simple and easy to sift through guide for anyone that is interested.

With Arcane around the corner, I think it's a good time to start playing Vi which I think is an extremely underrated pick in lane.
Pros/Cons
Pros:
- High damage
- Good mobility
- Great clear
- Decent CC

Cons:
- Squishy
- Enemy outplay potential (due to Vi's simplicity)
- Can reverse snowball (hard to manage being behind)
- The wind up time on Vault Breaker
Items
Some of the Common Item choices:

The Collector: This is part of my bread and butter for Vi mid builds as it gives you that edge for securing kills and snowballing whilst making some nice extra gold.

Trinity Force: The on-hit bonus is too good to pass up in my opinion. I think this might be one of the most versatile items for Vi and can work in many different situations so I end up buying it very often.

Essence Reaver: Beef up those already bone shattering autos with this very gold efficient item choice! Also mana might become an issue so it is a worthwhile item to prevent a situation where you might all-in without having enough mana to finish the job.

Youmuu's Ghostblade: I like the extra movement speed as sometimes the long wind up time on Vault Breaker can cost you a good pick so catching up to them first can be game changing.

Eclipse, Blade of the Ruined King and Sundered Sky: I like how these items feel when playing in games you might be expected to duel in. Since we have no innate sustain as Vi, we must make up for it with items like these to supplement our survivability.

Black Cleaver: This item synergises well with Denting Blows in reducing enemy armour so it's great into those enemy comps with high armour.

Sterak's Gage: The survivabilty you gain form this item is extremely valuable especially late game. Picking this item up alongside high damage items won't hurt and can boost your late game drastically by keeping you alive in high stakes team fights or duels.

Situational Items:

Maw of Malmortius and Wit's End: Great into heavy AP whilst still giving Vi valuable stats in offence.

Edge of Night: great when the enemy has team fight defining abilities or hard to dodge or ridiculous CC like Curse of the Sad Mummy or Nether Grasp.

Umbral Glaive: for vision control mostly which is always useful but perhaps not popular in low elo.

Serpent's Fang: good into enemy comps with a lot of shielding.

Profane Hydra: synergises well with your abilities and makes wave clear even faster which is not a priority as you have excellent clear already which is why I listed this under 'Situational Items'.

Death's Dance: I personally just like this item a lot for when there is one or two fed enemy AD champs. Can be quite a clutch item against burst AD assassins.
Is Vi mid really 'VI'able?
The short answer is yes. She is super easy to play mechanically and midlane is not exactly rocket science compared to some other roles. Don't let any snobs stop you from having some fun on the rift and obliterating your enemies. Besides, your lane opponent probably won't respect your damage enough ;)

Your potential is relatively high with this pick as Vi is not a difficult champion to play so you can focus more on other aspects of the game and perhaps securing objectives by acting as a very scary ward that can one-shot your ADCs (+ other squishies of course!).
Knocking some sense into your enemies~
Just a quick overview of my usual "strategies":

I like to go for early kills as you'll have a lot of kill pressure due to your damage that is a borderline cheese for early game laning phase. This will likely work in lower elos.
If you are successful at gaining a lead on your lane opponent then look for a roam or to ambush the enemy jungler and start tipping the scales in favour of your teammates. Don't forget to keep your waves pushed, Vi's incredible wave clear with Relentless Force will help massively with clearing waves extremely fast.

In the rare occasion that a talented little star like yourself starts falling behind, don't be afraid to build more into utility and play for map control instead; I know it's hard with so much damage potential but we must box strategically! Fear not as you will still be useful in securing picks.

A nice couple of combos to try:

1) Vault Breaker > Auto > Relentless Force > Auto x2
2) Cease and Desist > Auto > Relentless Force > Auto > Vault Breaker > Auto > Relentless Force
Punch first. Ask questions...wait what do I know?
As always I must emphasize the fact that I am not a high elo League of Legends lord with a ridiculously intense set of stats. I play for fun and this is just a little collection of information that I find useful and might also be for us casual enjoyers, not to marginalise you strategists out there but I am not yet on your level :) (perhaps someday...).

So try out my builds if you wish, if not that's cool too!

Thank you all for stopping by and if you read this far then congratulations you have a longer attention span than me :D
