You don't really need Athene's (unless you want CDR for Q farm) because of your passive and the fact that you build

To clarify, what you built is not "wrong"; it might have been a good choice given your situation. You have a concept of counterbuilding, but you should be aware of the fact that you should only go so far in itemizing for defense as to allow you to survive without crippling your damage output.
Well, you aren't building AP, which in its self is kind of bad.
Tear, not so hot either since you don't really have the cooldowns for it.
Zhonya's Hourglass, yes good as well as
Abyssal Mask. Both are defense+damage.
You're sacrificing a lot of mid-early game damage which isn't good in Veigar's case. At least in my opinion.

Right, the goal with tear was to eventually get
Seraph's Embrace which will give bonus AP. My last pickup was going to be rabadon's which combined with q would give me lots of damage. Not to mention I had good magic pen with void staff and boots. Abyssal Scepter would have been a good idea. I had forgotten about it during the game.

Chalice? no thx :D
I usualy build him quite AP heavy from start and after rabadon i take def measures since it is easy for me not to die with horizon cd up.
Tear
Sorc boots
Needlesly large rod
than it is kinda dependant on what i can.
Usualy i try to get DFG than archangel (should be near finish on stacking anyway)
And finish up the offensive with Rabadon since you will be kinda 1 shotting 1 person away from other team you shouldnt feel out of cash. Farming will be easier at this part too with your W a bit lvled up too.
Than i usualy take just Hourglass. And if you have this, it doesnt matter what you take next. You can even take hurricane or idk, hydra if you want. it simply doesnt matter. I would just suggest taking a bit health and maybe cdr if needed. CDR is a def measure for me on veig since i get my horizon faster etc.

I focus on getting mana regen, cdr and ap.
So: Faerie Charm x2, 2hp pots, 1mana pot for start
Rush Chalice, Sorcs and DFG
Finish with Deathcap, Athene's, Void Staff and something tanky like Abyssal, Zhonya or Warmog's. I've also tried Rylai's but that's not so good.

Since I didn't know who was going mid, I started boots and 3 pots. I figured that would keep me in lane long enough to know what to build next.
First back I got
I think we lost game because of team fights and a total lack of vision since I was the only one warding. I was just wondering if what I built was entirely incorrect or if I did appropriately build.
If its any consolation enemy veigar's R only took half my health, while my r killed him outright. This makes me feel like my idea behind my build did what I wanted it to, but I may have just had a misguided idea.
