Honestly, it's always been a valid pick for AP carries who wanted some CDR and the nice active. But the recent changes really feel like a nerf to me, because of just how much AP is required for the active to deal the same amount of damage as before. That you're seeing so much of it is probably just because it's sorta' Flavor Of The Month right now.

you need 1k ap for it to deal the same damage as the old dfg.
at about 1875 ap, dfg will deal 100% of an enemies current hp. but as you continue to stack ap it continues to increase, because of magic resist.

1000 is a bit high. You really only need a little over 700 AP, before building DFG, in order for the active to do the same amount of damage.
