Worlds 2024 is just days away. Read on to learn what changes have been implemented with the format since 2023, and when and where you can catch the action.
Worlds 2024 - Time and Date
The most important esports event of the year is just a couple days away. The best of the best from all of the different regions compete at Worlds just as the League of Legends Season comes to an end, and ultimately one team will walk away as Champions.
Worlds begins with the Play-In Stage on the 25th of September and concludes all the way on the 2nd of November with Finals. As Worlds is being held in Europe this year, the match times will be more palatable to European and Asian viewers. All matches begin at 14:00 CEST (Berlin time), which would translate to 08:00 (New York time), 05:00 (Los Angeles time), and 20:00 (Beijing time).
Worlds 2024 - Format
Worlds will consist of three different stages: The Play-In Stage, the Swiss Stage, and the Knockout Stage. All in all, twenty teams will compete, starting with eight teams in the Play-In stage on Wednesday.
Play-In Stage
The champions of CBLOL (Brazil) and LLA (Latin America) regions, the top two teams from PCS (Asia-Pacific) and VCS (Vietnam), and the third seeded team from the LEC (Europe) and LCS (North America) will all be placed into two, best-of-three, double elimination brackets in the Play-In Stage.
This means each team can lose one match without being disqualified. The winners of each bracket, those that go 2-0, will move onto the Swiss Stage. The lower bracket winners will gain the last two advancement slots, ultimately making it so that four out of the eight teams will qualify from the Play-In Stage to Swiss.
Swiss Stage
These four teams will join the top two seeded teams from the LEC and LCS as well as the top four from the LCK (Korea) and LPL (China). These 16 teams will then be seeded into four draw pools and drawn into a set of eight best-of-one matches. Pool 1 teams will fight Pool 4 teams, while Pool 2 will fight Pool 3. In the first round, no team will play a team from their own region. The pools will be drawn as such:
Pool 1: LCK1, LCS1, LEC1, LPL1
Pool 2: LCK2, LPL2, LCS2, LEC2
Pool 3: LCK3, LCK4, LPL3, LPL4
Pool 4: Play-In Stage Teams
Following the first round, there will be a second draw that pairs teams with the same record against one another. Teams will not be placed in rematches against previous opponents, and they can end up facing a team from their own region from the second round onwards. The tournament will repeat this process for three more rounds of play until a team reaches 3 wins to advance, or 3 losses to be eliminated from Worlds 2024.
In total, eight teams will advance to the Knockout Stage. All advancement and elimination matches will be best-of-threes.
Knockout Stage
These eight teams move on to the most exciting part of the tournament - Knockout Stage. This stage encompasses Quarterfinals, Seminfinals, and, of course, on the 2nd of November, Finals.
To up the stakes, the tournament transitions into a single-elimination bracket with all matches being best-of-fives. Quarterfinal matchups will be decided by an on-stage draw on the final day of the Swiss Stage. Teams that advanced with a 3-0 record will be playing against teams that advanced with a 3-2 record.
