This match up is fairly easy. Think about it. All his damage comes from his Q where they are very easy to dodge with your mobility and your Deviant Dance (W) can actually be useful to block his third Q. Just don't take damage early, don't let him auto you for free off the first wave with his passive because it hurts. Just wait till you are level 3 or 4 after he shoves you, build up stacks and GO IN.
Normally you start with corrupting and want to get a Doran's blade to help out your early game and give you a bit more health and then just rush BOTRK. At some point pick up executioners or bramble after BOTRK because even if you dumpster him in lane he will be annoying later.
Akali
This is not a fun match up. Irelia likes auto attacking people but Akali can deny that with her shroud and incredible ability. She doesn't need minions to be mobile she just is.
Tiamat into Wit's end is what you want with this build and you need to try and kill her before 6 since it is much harder for you to stick to her when you both have ultimates.
Punish her when shroud is down but this is a very hard match up past 6 and as the game progresses.
Camille
This lane can go either way early but with 5 stacks you definitely have an edge you just need to make sure you use your W to block Camille's leap and then go in on her with stacks. I have low data against her this season since I never see her but every Camille I have come across has not been an issue. However Camille has AMAZING gank set up so you need to play accordingly.
However, Camille late game will absolutely destroy you because her true damage, attack speed steroid.
REMEMBER her ult can be used to dodge your ult so make sure you keep that in mind when going in on her.
Cho'Gath
Get stacks, all in him. BOTRK build just destroys him and you are so mobile.
Please do not lose this matchup.
It is a very simple match up :)
Darius
This lane kinda sucks. It is very winnable BUT you need to play it perfectly.
You only win if you get 5 stacks and hit all your abilities and you need to be careful not to get pulled out of your Q or you instantly lose. You stack your passive faster than Darius obviously so use that to your advantage. You do not take short trades with Darius when you go in you are committed and you cannot half-*** it.
A good Darius will know that he can abuse you level 1 and he will most likely try to cheese you in tri bush (if you leashed red side) or he will sit in top lane bush and wait for you to walk up to the wave and try to cheese you with his Crippling Strike (W) and slow you and just out auto you. Start with your Flawless Duet (E) and wait till you are level 3 or 4 to go in on him. Build up stacks near turret because if they wave is past river towards him you CANNOT fight him. You need stacks and you need a lot of lane room to run him down when you go in.
Darius will kill you if you miss something. Can be outplayed but it is hard.
Dr. Mundo
You just run Dr. Mundo down honestly. Remember when you are both 6 he will lose a ton of health because he will probably activate his ultimate too late and you will just burst him.
This lane is free.
Fiora
This matchup is favored towards Fiora BUT you can win it if you bait out her Riposte (W) since it has a much longer cooldown than your stun.
You need to realize that in this matchup if you have 5 stacks of your passive you can just auto attack her to win. Problem is getting 5 stacks so you will be shoved in a lot.
When you are both 6 you have much more burst than Fiora does so a bad Fiora will waste her Riposte (W) to block your stun, side step it, then all in her with ult assuming you have stacks built up already. This lane will become harder and harder as the game progresses BUT you can build a certain way and totally shut her down if she doesn't know how to play it.
If a Fiora uses her mobility to dodge your stuns and keeps holding on to her Riposte (W) then you might be in trouble.
You can definitely out play this match up but you need to be very comfortable with Irelia. If you are unsure if you can take her just clear waves and wait to out perform her in team fights.
Gangplank
I have this marked as even for a reason.
Gangplank as most people think is a very easy match up for Irelia BUT if you ever come across a Gangplank that actually knows how to play you might struggle a bit.
Pay attention to his wave management. If he freezes it by his tower which is very possible you are in trouble. Gangplank can control waves at any point in the game because he has the ranged ability to break a freeze.
Hitting stuns on a proactive gangplank can be hard and he will poke you really hard. If you are struggling against his poke I recommend picking up an early Doran's shield and sitting on a cloth armor to help out the early game.
Your level 6 power spike is much stronger so if you are struggling to go in on him before hand wait until 6. If Gangplank is is using Parrrley (Q) off CD and spamming it early pay attention to his mana because he will run out fast.
Thing to note. Gangplank gets a ton of move speed when he blows up a barrel so a way to catch him off guard is to sit back far out of range, bladesurge (Q) to a minion, quickly auto the barrel, and deny him the move speed and look to all in. When ever he has a flaming sword this is his passive Trial by Fire and it will burn you for true damage and give him move speed. It is very important to destroy barrels before going in on him because if Gangplank destroys a barrel it resets his passive.
This should be an easier lane but proceed with caution at first. No need to force because once you have some items you can just run him down.
Garen
Ah Garen, my favourite stat check in the top lane.
This is favoured towards Garen because most of them take ignite in the top lane but it is not really worth taking yourself since you can make Teleport plays and pick up easy kills if bot lane over extends. Teleport will always scale a lot better.
The way to winning this match up is to pay attention to Garen's abilities and punish him when he uses them at in opportune times and especially his ability Courage (W). This is the ability that can definitely make or break an all in against him because it has a 24 second cooldown level 1.
The basic combo to kill Garen is build stacks, jump near him, use Defiant Dance (W) to block his damage from Decisive Strike (Q) and then keep holding Deviant Dance because he will most likely instantly use Judgement (E) and you can block a few ticks of damage. This blocks most of his upfront damage and you now have a window to re engage on him.
You need to make sure when you go in on him you have room to chase him down because you do not want to take short trades with a Garen since he excels at them thanks to his really annoying passive that heals him up a ton when he is out of combat.
If you take a really good trade but did not quite kill him and start to shove him in, keep up the aggression. Get a ward down and keep trying to poke him with auto attacks or your ranged abilities every so often to keep canceling his passive.
His level 6 power spike is much stronger than yours especially with ignite because it will keep you from healing back up in a fight against him leaving you vulnerable to getting executed by his point and click true damage ultimate Demacian Justice (R).
Try and go in on him levels 3-5 since it is much easier. Make sure not to east free poke damage from him and always wait till you have Deviant Dance (W).
Gnar
Gnar is ranged and you are a straight counter to him.
You just land Flawless Duet (E) and you smash this Yordle into the ground.
When he is in Mega Gnar form he relies heavily on hitting his Wallop (W) to stun enemies and get free damage off but Irelia can either block it with Defiant Dance (W) or use Bladesurge (Q) and jump through him because it puts you behind your target.
Very easy match up.
Illaoi
This is marked even because before 6 you can probably kill Illaoi whenever you have 5 stacks and hit your abilities. However this lane does get much harder as the game progresses because of how she builds and just how Illaoi's damage scales.
Easiest way to dominate this lane is to bait out her Test of Spirit (E) since that is where all her damage comes from. A true Illaoi main will always level this ability first making it much harder to go in on her later because even if she misses it will not be on a huge cooldown.
You need to try and go in on before 6 and you are most likely on your own in this match up becasue I wouldn't trust a jungler to know how to gank this lane and it will end up in being a double kill for her.
After you get BOTRK make sure to get either executioners or bramble to stop her healing so you can actually fight her. Even with healing reduction she will start to hurt.
I have done a LOT of limit testing in this match up before and even when severly ahead of her as long as she hits Test of Spirit (E) she will win.
You can get a lead off her early but do not fight her past level 11 to be safe unless you are confident you can outplay it.
Irelia
Lmao stop playing blind pick.
Jax
I perma ban Jax personally.
His scaling and kit is a direct counter to you because of Counter Strike (E). It just cancels all of your damage since a ton of Irelia's damage is loaded into her auto attacks.
If you for whatever reason decide to not ban him as an Irelia main well just think of this lane as a ticking time bomb. Once you get a lead you need to keep it because you can never give him a foot hold to come back into the game because he will obliterate you later. If you are even in items he wins just buy existing because he does not have skill shots.
Just ban him please. I beg of you. This champ is broken and has barely changed since season 1 when I started playing.
I hate Jax. fk u jax.
Jayce
Easy, because he is ranged and SPOILER ALERT Irelia does well into ranged.
Here is how the match up goes:
Jayce shoves you in, you build stacks, you land Flawless Duet (E) and Bladesurge (Q) to him, he knocks you back, you Bladesurge (Q) back because of the reset, and he eventually dies or flashes away as you just auto him to death.
At 6 this is the easiest match up to all in because when Jayce hits level 6 he doesn't get an ultimate ability since he technically already has it at level 1.
So if somehow you are struggling early against him just wait to all in him at 6.
Respect him early if he plays aggro and just wait till you are level 3.
Kalista
Rare you will see this but some people play it. Only difficult thing is hitting Flawless Duet (E) but her attack speed and move speed is very low early so it shouldn't be too difficult.
This is what we call a "Free LP" lane because anytime you go in on her she just dies.
Careful when she is 6 though since she can through a curve ball at you and by curve ball I mean she will grab her jungler by the neck and launch them at your face.
If you see a Kalista top they are either a smurf, duo with a jungler who will try to camp them, or they are just a psychopath thinking they can pull it off. You win this match up hard.
Karma
Tank top Karma is not really meta at the moment but you might see it. Karma wins most top match ups by kiting people to death but you have too many gap closing abilities for her to do that.
Land abilities and win hard.
Kayle
As a Kayle player myself if you actually get to load into a game against a Kayle and she didn't dodge in champion select she is trolling.
This is one of those match ups that Kayle cannot do anything and just takes whatever abuse you want to dish out.
I wouldn't even classify Kayle as a champion before level 6, more like an over sized angelic cannon minion that gives you more gold when you kill it.
Also keep in mind her ultimate is 160 second cool down so it is even longer than yours.
You win this match up VERY hard.
Seriously if you ever some how manage to lose this match up you need to close League of Legends and re think life in general.
I joke but please don't lose it.
Kennen
Another ranged match up. A little slippery because of the stuns and move speed from Lightning Rush (E) but you should win this match up hard.
Irelia does well into almost every single ranged match up top because the lane is long and her sticking power is undisputed.
Kill the Yordle.
Just land abilities 4HEAD.
Kled
Ahh Kled. Another annoying Yordle.
You need to dodge his Bear-trap-on-a-rope (Q) and build up stacks before going in like most match ups.
The main thing you need to play around is his ability Violent Tendencies (W) because he cannot control when he gets to activate it. Every 14 seconds he gets empowered auto attacks and if you see him waste it on minions GO IN ON HIM. This is where a lot of his damage comes from early on soa good Kled will zone you off the wave when he has this ability primed and ready because it will chunk you hard.
Kled also has a lot of sticking power himself so when the lane is shoved in you need to stand back and play it safe.
Do not get baited by Mini Kled because if he has his Violent Tendencies (W) up he will instantly get Skarl back and a ton of health with it if he gets to use it on you.
Playing around his W is key! Be careful because this match up plays differently and can be strange.
As the game progresses you can fight him easily with items. especially with the split build he can't do anything. Always fight him in minion waves for stacks plus mobility so you can dance around him and he should never be able to hit his Q.
Don't get baited by his passive, avoid his very tele graphed Q ability, pay attention to his on hit passive.
Lucian
lmao.
Malphite
I hate this champion.
If the Malphite has comet you have a very big chance early on to fight him because he will most likely max his Ground Slam (E) which absolutely destroys any attack speed you have and most of your damage on Irelia comes from auto attacks.
This lane will most likely go even unless you can get a big lead on him early and punish him before he hits lvl 7+ assuming he is maxing Ground Slam (E)
Personally every Maokai I have gone against has not give me an issue but the lane can be a stalemate.
I say that because going up against this champion he can choose when he wants to fight you or simply when he wants to ignore you because of his tankiness, self peel, and CC.
If he takes aftershock he will be very annoying since he will most likely sit back and try really hard to shrug you off.
The goal here is to let him shove you in because you need to abuse the fact that you are in a long lane and can chase him down and stick to him to actually finish him off.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES unless you are 100% sure are you to dive this man. This tree will make himself look thick and juicy but do not go in on him under tower. Just do not do it please.
BORTK rush will shred him and it gets even easier once you have Wit's end.
Try to be careful about ganks because Moakai can lock you down and hold you close for his jungler to come up for that juicy Irelia gold.
This lane shouldn't be hard and be careful he doesn't cancel your Bladesurge (Q) because every single on of his abilities except his Sapling Toss (E) can cancel your resets.
This is not a fun lane for Irelia.
You need to get a feel for it but at certain stages of the lane and depending on levels and items he just simply stat checks you.
You need to try and get a lead early because if this lane stays even you don't really win till you have a completed item.
Most Morde players will paly stupid aggro and if that is the case let them shove you in early.
If for whatever reason the Morde lets you control the wave early you need to try and cheese him level 2.
Morde has decent cool downs on his abilities early except for his Obliterate (Q) so you need to punish him if he misses them or if he wastes them.
If you get a lead you can snowball out of control since he has no escapes.
Be careful and don't take fights because if he gets ahead you cannot win. He simply stat checks you and will ult you when ever he can.
Do NOT have a weak jungler gank him unless you know for sure his ultimate is down. That xXl33t420blazeXx Khazix main that wants to gank your lane? No. You tell him NO.
Nasus is annoying simply because even if you destroy him early, once he gets to a certain point in the game you cannot fight him at all.
Nasus is weak early so you need to abuse that. Zone him off minions and if he gets too close you need to all in him and assert dominance.
Once Nasus is lvl 11 and later you most likely cannot fight him anymore even at lvl 9 it can be difficult depending on how far behind he is.
A smart Nasus will max Wither (W) second against you which will make his 1v1 even stronger against you, gimping your attack speed.
Abuse this lane early, get a lead, and carry that lead into the mid game and don't keep just brainlessly farming.
This is a very easy lane and you need to know how to use your free lead you get from it.
Nasus is literally a dog a champion.
Don't fight him. This lane is a waiting game. If Nocturne ever wastes his Shroud of Darkness (W) then you can turn and fight him but most likely he won't.
Nocturne will win an all out auto attack war against you especially with his hard CC when he fears you.
This is probably the only time i rush Tiamat into Trinity force to keep up with his insane wave clear and have better team fighting since we won't be trying to 1v1 him.
Try and keep vision for your team in the river so you can keep track of where he is at all times when he tries to roam.
Do not fight him.
Personally have never struggled against an Ornn. For me it is as easy as building up stacks and all ining him.
He is a tank so when you do go in you need to make sure that you have enough roam in the lane to run him down.
Don't eat a bunch of free damage while building stacks and this lane should be easy.
If you do happen to get behind then yikes. Ornn can do a lot of damage for a "tank" and make you cry if you get behind.
Hit abilities, don't be bad, win this lane.
EZ PZ
Stupid yordle.
You won't win simply by out sustaining since she runs biscuits and time wrap tonic with potions as well.
To play this lane you need to properly play around her Steadfast Presence (W) also known as the ability of ******** because it will instant;y cancel your Bladesurge (Q). If you ever land Flawless Duet (E) on Poppy she might instantly activate her W which is exactly what you want because her barrier lasts for 2 seconds where your mark will stay on her for 5 seconds. Her grounding ability also has a 24 second cool down at rank 1 giving you a 6 second advantage to re engage on her with Flawless Duet (E) in case you were not able to before.
DO NOT take free damage from her under tower. When you are under tower you can't stand next to the wall or just sit in front of your tower. She will use Heroic Charge (E), stun you, follow up with Hammer Shock (Q), and then run away with Steadfast Presence (W) move speed and you won't be able to retaliate.
Poppy is also very good at setting up dives against you since you cannot retaliate for 2 seconds and it is very easy for her to hit a stun on you when shoved in.
You need to try and keep the wave off your tower but also not shoved into her or you get zoned off the wave.
If you are both lvl 6+ and you bait out her Steadfast Presence (W) the second you ult her to finish her off she will simply use her ultimate to knock you away so you need to have flash available to stick to her and finish her off.
Killing her is difficult but it can be done.
Ranged so you win.
If you use your Flawless Duet (E) put it in a straight line behind where Quinn is from you as far as you can so when she uses Vault (E) she will get hit by it no matter what.
I have seen Quinn player run soooo many different runes but honestly the end result should be the same.
If you are big noob and having trouble landing your stun just wait until 6 and ult her.
If you some how miss ult then idk what to tell you :(
Easy lane for you.
If he takes ignite do not fight him.
Renekton can just relentlessly bully you and there is only one way you can win and it is if he outplays himeself.
If he ever uses Ruthless Predator (W) you need to try and time it so that he stuns you as your activate your Defiant Dance (W) mitigating a very big portion of his damage and then you can turn the fight on him and stick to him.
However of he catches you off guard he will stun you, chunck you, heal up a ton, and then dash away and you will be too low to try and retaliate.
You need jungle assistance if he plays hyper aggro and zones you off the wave because if he plays that far in your face he shouldn't be allowed to play like that for free. This is top lane though and usually your jungler will block it out of their mind that this lane exists so have fun with that.
HOWEVER this is all assuming that the Renekton is smart, if for whatever reason he lets you get 5 stacks and stays in range of you then you can just land a stun and go in on him because you need to get off damage on him first before he uses abilities on you so you can continue to fight.
God speed.
Do not walk near the wave at all lvl 1.
Rengar relies heavily on cheesing you early so you are completely zoned off the wave until he shoves you in. Do nit go near the wave no matter how thicc and juicy those minions look because he will dunk on you.
Once you are level 3 it is possible to mitigate his empowered Savagery (Q) where all his burst comes from with your Defiant Dance (W). If you do properly block the damage you can turn and all in him.
Rengar will most likely take ignite but you can still play around it. As the game progresses it should get easier for you and especially 6+ your all in is much stronger because his ultimate doesn't really help him much in a 1v1 scenario.
Reminder, seriously, do not go near the wave level 1.
Don't get cheesed early and give him space. I have him marked as a major counter because despite some of you reading this you will still get cheesed by the Rengar.
I have Riven as an extreme counter because if she has a brain she just wins.
Pre 6 you have a chance to get a lead and snowball but Riven controls this lane. How this lane goes is entirely left in the hands of Riven and how skilled the player is that pilots her.
The reason why this lane is so hard is because with the BOTRK build you can easily get burstered before you can auto her to death if she just stacks the CC and damage on you. Not only that you will never land your stun on her unless she messes up since her Valor (E) is on a much much shorter cool down than yours so she can always have it up to dodge your stun.
The lane is possible to win because most likely if you are below Diamond you can find the mistakes that a Riven player will make.
In this match up look to exploit her early before 6 but if she doesn't give you openings play it safe and farm. The current meta build is not the best into Riven.
She will out damage you. Play it safe.
Never have I struggled vs a Rumble but it can be a very annoying lane because Rumble can play extremely super safe and just wave clear and back off.
If Rumble is smart he won't ever fight you so you will be stuck in a forever farming lane. If Rumble plays too far up you need to all in him because you just straight up out damage him.
If Rumble does get ahead however you will get completely zoned off the wave because he will hurt.
You have a lot of mobility so even if he ults you can easily jump out of it.
This will most likely be a boring farm lane if the Rumble plays it properly but if he is hyper aggro look to kill him.
lmao. Let him shove you in because he does poke a lot early and every Ryze likes to spam their spells so they can feel like Faker.
Once you are in a save spot to get stacks look to all in him every chance you get because he is made of paper and he is ranged.
You can go BOTRK or Trinity in the match up because both will destroy him.
You should obliterate Ryze.
I find this match up can go either way because this champ has no mana, stupid base stats, and unfortunately likes to build BOTRK and can CC lock you for ganks.
Personally I think I have lost this once due to my own mistakes. Sett on a fundamental level is a very basic champion. Runs at you, pulls you in, auto attacks you until he needs to activate Haymaker for the shield or until you are out of distance.
Look to kite him when ever he uses Knuckle Down (Q). If he wastes it or any of his abilities you need to punish him for because if you have a fully stacked passive and he whiffs and ability you 100% win the fight.
The main source of damage you need to dodge is his Haymaker (W). I mean it does true damage if the middle hits you so stay away from it. Whenever he activates this ability you can just Bladesurge (Q) into him and dodge it.
Try and activate Defiant Dance (W) when he is about to hit you with Knuckle Down (Q) or you think he is about to use Face Breaker (E) and then you can turn on him ONLY if you have 5 stacks.
If you cannot safely get 5 stacks before going in on him he will definitely out auto attack you and win the exchange.
DO NOT get baited by is stupid health regen and his Grit passive that gives him a massive shield.
Haymaker is a lot of Sett's early damage and surviability. It has a very long cool down early so if he wastes it you need to go in.
Sett may be a simple champ but he still hurts and honestly sometimes you out play yourself into simple champs because you over think things.
Slow down and look for openings.
Shen can be annoying and zone you off the wave because as long as his abilities are up he can go in on you whenever where you need to have 5 stacks available so you can retailiate.
Do not go near him when the wave is anywhere close to his tower because he will win short trades very very hard and well getting taunted while in tower range isn't very ideal is it?
You need to make sure you have room in the lane to re engage on him after he blows all his abilities. Do not be scared if he chunks you to go back in on him because early on he has really high cool downs on all of his abilities except for Twilight Assault (Q).
Respect Shen early but you should win the auto attack ward if you play it right. Do not take short trades ever with this stupid ninja.
Make sure you always keep an eye on him so you can cancel ults but some Shen players will make really bad ultimate decisions and be late with them so you can let him go and punish hard by getting farm and turret plates if you know his TP is down.
Trying to get this guy to use TP early is very important so make sure you are controlling the waves accordingly so he can't just ult for free and lose nothing for it.
Your level 6 power spike is much bigger than his because well his isn't any good in a 1v1 situation.
Don't be big noob and make sure to read the map to see what you can do and if you need to follow him or not.
Singed is annoying because of his play style but you can stick to him really hard.
You need to build stacks and look to hit him with stun. How this match up should look is you hit him Flawless Duet (E), Bladesurge (Q) to him, he Flings (E) you, you Bladesure (Q) back to him, he puts down Mega Adhesive (W), and you auto him till you can't anymore. After that he will be insanely low or you might even be able to flash after him and kill him since singed is made of paper early and doesn't like champs that can stick to him.
It will gradually get harder to stick to him as he gets armor health or even a Rylai's to perma slow you.
However with BOTRK into Wit's End he legit can't do anything to you. You can just heal up all damage he does and with BOTRK active you can stick to him even harder.
The only thing you need to be careful of is him putting you in a bad spot in a team fight with his Mega Adhesive (W). If you are on top of this you cannot use Flash or Bladesurge (Q) and this can result in you dying or missing out on kills. This ability is the only scary thing about Singed for you.
Match up shouldn't be difficult but if you get behind Singed will make your life hell because Singed.
insanely easy match up.
When ever you have 5 stack you can all in him when ever you want because not only do you out damage him but his Decimating Smash (Q) is useless against you. Whenever he is charging it up you can just Bladesurge (Q) at him to dodge it or you can even hold down Defiant Dance (W) to mitigate the damage. He also has no mobility at all so he is by far one of the easiest tanks to just chase down and kill.
Post 6 the only thing you need to do is whenever you all in him you need to position yourself between him and his escape route so he is forced to flash to that he can't simply activate his ultimate and run away.
Not a hard match up but be careful being hyper aggro in this lane and keep good vision up because you will most likely make Sion cry for ganks.
BOTRK build also ruins Sion's whole career.
Satan.
He will zone you off minions but if he doesn't then he is big bad so it will make things even easier.
Most Teemo players will take ignite but even then it shouldn't stop you from clapping his furry cheeks. This is a match up that I ALWAYS build Triforce into because well Teemo can stop your auto attacks so the CDR and burst from sheen helps you to just simply burst him.
You have too much mobility for Teemo to properly kite you so as long as you hit your abilities you can just snowball out of control.
Do not be scared to go in on him even if he has Blind Dart (Q) up because it doesn't last that long at all and your base damages from all your abilities still chunk him really hard and you can just wait for the blind to wear off to kill him.
Just make sure you respect the early levels so he doesn't just chunk you and have a super insane HP advantage on you.
This is a match up you want to see. If you are scared of Teemo as an Irelia main I feel bad for you becasue you must over come the fear of Satan.
I play a lot of Tryndamere myself and I can see both ways that this lane can go.
Irelia has a much easier time dealing with Tryndamere with the new BOTRK build and vs Tryndamere I go a specific build. BOTRK, Ninja Tabis, Warden's mail, then Wit's End and finish into Randuins.
Why? Well 1 you can out auto attack him, heal through damage, and then also tank his autos through armor. Tryndamere is a 1 dimensional champion that can only do so much to out play but most likely he is counting on crits,
Early laning you NEED to punish him with autos. You have a larger attack range so don't let him attack minions for free. Usually you want to auto attack him as he is walking away from the wave or in the middle of attack a minion so he can't instantly retaliate.
You also need to realize that despite him most likely have ignite, if you get 5 stacks you will out damage his auto attacks because of conq and your passive. You need to not be scared.
levels 6+ you can't be scared to all in him you just need to make sure you have a minion wave available or flash so you can kite him. When you have 5 stacks and unleash your whole combo you will burst him VERY fast making him blow ult and then this is where you look to kite away. Sure you want to kill Tryndamere in the 1v1 but believe me if you make him blow ult and you can kite away from him he will have to back because Tryndamere isn't much of a champion without his ultimate unless he is super far ahead.
I have played Tryndamere into Irelia many times myself so I know how to not int because this lane can snowball super hard either way. If Tryndamere doesn't respect your 5 stacks when he shoves you in and lingers near by you need to go in. The whole point of winning this match up is to honestly out damage him and not be scared.
Getting a feel for this match up can take time but it is very easy to beat most Tryndamere mains because sometimes all they know how to do is fight and don't put much thought process into it.
Urgot is annoying because of his ultimate. Sure he is ranged but honestly with consistent damage he deals with Purge (W) he can be an issue.
You can win this early simply by getting 5 stacks and all inning him but it is a problem that he also builds a similar drank tank build like Irelia does.
Most Urgot players will run conq and build Black cleaver and Death's Dance making him extremely good at dueling. You struggle once he has these items because even if you have a similar drain tank build his ultimate is what ruins it. You will win 100% of the time if he misses it but if he hits it you lose no matter what because you WILL drop below the health thresh hold and get executed.
To be able to 1v1 him you need exec, BOTRK, some health, but you shouldn't only be building to 1v1 unless that is your win condition.
You need to know when he wins this match up because even when he is behind once he gets certain items and levels he becomes really annoying to 1v1 because he will deal super consistent damage to you.
Try and get ahead early and abuse him because you win but don't continue to try and 1v1 him as the game progresses unless you have the proper build for it.
Knowing the limitations of the match up takes time.
Something to note is that his lunge has a wind up time and is pretty easy to tell when he is going to use it, dodge his leap and you win an all in with ease.
Vlad is weak as hell early and he needs to play scared.
How you win this lane revolves around how you control the minion wave and how he uses Sanguine Poll (W).
When you force Vladimir to use his pool early not only does it chunk him because it costs 20% of his current HP but it puts it on a 28 second cool down! That leaves him insanely vulnerable and gives you a 10 second window to zone him or all in him assuming you used your Flawless Duet (E) at the same time.
6+ is a waiting game. I say this because Vlad has to make very hard decisions of when to use his Sanguine Pool (W). If he uses it to dodge Flawless Duet (E) then you can just use your ultimate and kill him. If he doesn't use it to dodge Flawless Duet (E) then you can Bladesurge (Q) at him and hold your ultimate the entire time because you don't need it to auto him to death.
Never waste your ultimate when you know he has pool available unless you can break vision or catch him off guard.
Respect his empowered Transfusion (Q) and with BOTRK build he can't keep up with your sustain early.
This is an easy match up but Vlad is Vlad. If you screw up and you can no longer 1v1 him he will get to scale for free and be very scary.
This is favoured towards you.
If he has ignite and Press the Attack you can never fight him.
This is probably one of Irelia's hardest match ups in the game. Until he is reworked he stat checks you so insanely hard that even if you land everything, have 5 stacks, he still wins.
Just do not fight him I cannot stress this enough how hard it is to fight Volibear. Don't believe me? Go up against a buddy in a custom game, build up 5 stacks and fight him at level 3 or something and let me know how it goes.
You legit just do not win unless you get super far ahead. There is a reason this champ is getting reworked.
Not impossible but it is super hard. If he is running ignite don't fight him when he is lvl 6.
Wukong is over tuned at the moment and is not a very hard champion to play. Warrior Trickster (W) is also what makes this hard because you can essentially never hit a good Wukong player if he is fast enough because this ability makes him go invisible and DASH into any direction he wants. You will never be able to hit stun because he can always dash out of it. You only have a 2 second window if he uses it when you use Flawless Duet (E) so that doesn't help you at all.
This is assuming Wukong plays it perfectly. If you do his a stun on him you can definitely win an all in. Most Wukong players will try to dash backwards away from you instead of side ways when you use Flawless Duet (E). So even if you hit the clone, Bladesurge (Q) to it anyways because it is a free stack and you can just Bladesurge (Q) to the real one once he is out of invis.
Wukong will have to different trading patterns. He will either use Crushing Blow (Q) into Nimbus Strike (E) and then use Warrior Trickster (W) to get away. If this is the case you need to make sure you effectively use Defiant Dance (W) to mitigate the damage and look to retaliate while he is on cool down.
A better Wukong player that understands the match up will poke you with Crushing Blow (Q) and only ever use his other abilities when you try to go in on him and look to kite around minions and make you miss your Flawless Duet (E).
Adapt to how the Wukong is playing but making sure that you land Flawless Duet (E) and using Deviant Dance (W) are very important to this match up.
After 6 the double knock up is extremely frustrating and honestly if he has a lead or has ignite I will say just don't fight him because it isn't worth the risk. Wukong is an extremely good team fighter with his ultimate and he doesn't even need to be a good player to pull it off.
Proceed with caution and if he has ignite try and win before 6 if not just wait for ganks.
Such an easy match up. You know Yorick's little ghouls that he spawns? FREE MONEY. Your Bladesurge (Q) one shots them at all stages of the game so honestly he can never fight you because you can instantly stack your passive off them while also getting rid of a big portion of his 1v1 damage and then just all in him.
He also cannot lock you down with his little bone cage ability because of your mobility.
There shouldn't be much explanation for this match up because you literally just stack your passive and run him down.
This might actually be here easiest match up not really sure yet.
i don't have much data on this match up and only have played it twice but both times I just rushed BOTRK, stacks passive and just won.
He can get behind but still be very useful to his team because of his kit which is annoying so it forces you to try and get a lead in the match up.
Circas here and I have been playing league since season 1 and have been playing Irelia since season 2. I have peaked Diamond 1 playing Irelia top lane.
If you want to embark on this journey of playing Irelia just know it is not an easy one. Irelia is one of the hardest champs to play in the game because you need to have good mechanics, good macro, and just honestly need to be a well rounded player. You need to know match ups like the back of your hand so you know how you can probably abuse each match up. You need to play a lot of games with Irelia to get a grasp on her so don't expect to just pick her up and do well instantly.
However if you do learn Irelia and you do pull off a big out play it is the most rewarding feeling in League of Legends.
I love this champion and I really hope this guide helps you to understand her better because I put a lot of thought into this and really want to help people succeed.
If you have any questions and want to contact me or if you want to watch live game play here are a few links!
Now you will read a lot of different things about what items Irelia should always build and this and that and I honestly think everyone is wrong.
People need to realize that Irelia is a high skill cap mobile champion that has a lot of room for out playing people and believe it or not can also have versatility and her build path. Most of the time I am going the core 3 items of BOTRK, Wit's End, and Black Cleaver. However it doesn't mean that Trinity is always useless, or you can never go Death's Dance for a drain tank build. I just build accordingly to the people I am playing against and play to the win condition of the role that I need to full fill for my team.
I really don't believe in all these guides that I read where people always try to shoe horn others into one specific build path. You need to know when you have to switch up your build and I hope I clarify that enough for people in the build section.
Match ups
So big disclaimer, these are my thoughts on Irelia match ups given MY skill set in Diamond 1 against other Diamond players. You may disagree with some that is fine but you need to remember that there are some match ups that I haven't had the opportunity of playing at all or have very little data on.
I took a very long time picking my brain going through all the match ups I possibly could so if you are struggling and can;t figure out how to win certain match ups maybe try to catch a stream or submit some game play to me.
