The Best Duo Combos!

Why This Works: Galio's ultimate is a 1.25 second channel that offers the ally targeted decent damage reduction, followed by a dash that deals damage in an AOE around the ally's starting location. Warwick and Nunu & Willump both stand still in their ultimates, meaning they can combine theirs with Galio's for success. Warwick's ultimate is a 1.5 second suppress (slightly longer than Galio's channel) meaning if timed properly, it is a guaranteed Galio ult, all whilst Warwick is shrugging off damage from any other sources. Nunu & Willump's ultimate is an AOE channeled slow that detonates for massive damage. It can be channeled for up to 3 seconds, and is thus more forigving if Galio reacts later than with Warwick, but less rewarding as it is not as guaranteed as Warwick's ultimate. Nonetheless, it can still be potentially lethal and both champions work excellently with Galio.

Support/Top: Shen's Stand United
and
Jungle: Master Yi's Meditate

Why This Works: Master Yi is infamous for being the 1v5 champion of League of Legends, and his carry potential can be further exemplified by Shen's Stand United. Master Yi could be losing a fight, or in a tough situation. In many situations, Master Yi's Meditate is not enough by itself to save him from death, however, with a Shen ultimate to absorb incoming damage, Master Yi can heal himself to fight-winning health. A fed Master Yi is a won game, after all.

Why This Works: Lulu's Whimsy grants the targeted ally bonus attack speed and movement speed. Kai'Sa uses both of these as scaling on her E, Supercharge. This allows her to charge quicker, to move faster whilst charging, and to attack quicker once charged. Jinx's Get Excited! also uses both of Whimsy's buffs as scaling, allowing Jinx to move faster after getting a kill, and attack faster after said kill too. Varus' Living Vengeance only utilizes the attack speed aspect of Whimsy, but he still synergises well as the move speed helps him make up for his mobility weakness as a champion. A quick mention: running the rune Celerity and buying the item Stormrazor further increase the effectiveness of this synergy.

Why This Works: Simple explanation for this one. Braum's Stand Behind Me grants a percentage increase in armor and magic resist to the target he casts it on, and Rammus, Ornn and Poppy all use these stats as scaling. Rammus uses these the most effectively, with his Defensive Ball Curl "increasing his armor by 30 plus 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 90% and magic resistance by 10 plus 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45% of Rammus' total resistances." So yeah. Pretty synergistic there. As for Ornn, he uses those stats for increased damage on his Searing Charge. "(+ 40% bonus armor) (+ 40% bonus magic resistance)" to be specific. Finally, Poppy: " Poppy's total armor and magic resistance are increased by 10%. This effect is doubled to 20% while Poppy is below 40% of her maximum Health." Make sure Braum's partner takes Conditioning - it provides added synergy.

Why This Works: There's alot of champions that work well with Wild Growth, and the ones listed above all scale with bonus health. They are order of bonus health scaling ( Urgot tops the list at 30% bonus health on Purge, Vladimir comes last at 10% on Sanguine Pool). Urgot and Shen's passive use the Wild Growth for defensive gain. Shen's E, Volibear, Cho'Gath and Vladimir all use the Wild Growth for extra damage. These champions all work excellently with Lulu's Wild Growth.

Why This Works: An alternative to Lulu's Whimsy is Nidalee's Primal Surge, which offers healing rather than movement speed, and fills the unique niche of a supportive jungler. Primal Surge gives more attack speed than Whimsy, so for higher DPS, Nidalee is the better choice. However, Lulu will be with the ADC constantly, whereas Nidalee will only be buffing the ADC when ganking, so it is up to the duo on what suits them better. Are you / your partner better at Lulu or Nidalee? Make sure the ADC builds Stormrazor for added effectiveness.

Why This Works: You've probably noticed the pattern, in that the attack speed buffers tend to include these 3 champions as effective partners. This is the last of the attack speed buffers, so fear not! No more repetition. Nunu & Willump's Blood Boil brings something that neither Lulu, Nidalee, or any other champ in the game offer - AP buffing. This is a niche unique to Nunu & Willump, and it works well with all of these champions! You don't want to build AP on Varus or Jinx, but you can on Kai'Sa if you prefer - it's actually meta to do so at the minute! Kai'Sa's Q, W and R all have good AP scaling. Varus' W and R both scale with AP well, although building AD is definitely better on him. Nonetheless, the AP buffs help Varus deal higher DPS due to the W, and helps the R hit harder than enemies may expect. Jinx only has 1 AP scaling ability - her E. It has 100% AP scaling though, so if you can successfully root an enemy with Flame Chompers! whilst under Blood Boil, it will deal a lot of damage. Make sure the ADC takes Celerity and builds Stormrazor (if applicable.)

Ally Targeted Abilities

The list of abilities below all have one thing in common - they all target allies. This is everyone single ally-targeted ability in the game - the ones that are crossed out don't offer any synergy. The ones that aren't crossed out have a short extract from the League of Legends Wiki explaining how they are helpful.

Why Should You Duo Queue Rather Than Solo Queuing?

In my experience, duo queuing is more effective as you have more control over the game - 40% of your team rather than 20% to be exact. If you queue with a reliable partner, you reduce the chance of getting someone salty or toxic in your game. Many people like to solo queue, and ultimately, it's down to personal preference.

What Lanes Should Be Duo Queued For Consistent Success?

I would not recommend duo queuing as any bot lane role with someone else not in bot lane. This is because the bot laner can be left with an unreliable partner, which can cause them to lose control over their lane and make it too difficult to impact the game on their own. That is not to say that you shouldn't queue this combinations - anything can work, after all! In fact, some of the best combos in the first chapter of this guide use some of these duo roles. This is more of a personal preference than anything.

Top + ADC
Top + Support
Jungle + ADC
Jungle + Support
Mid + ADC
Mid + Support

This leaves us with these four combinations:

Top + Mid
This is my preferred combo for duo queue. With a premade top and mid laner, they are in solo lanes, leaving full control to them, and unlike the role of jungler, they are not relied on by other lanes to help them win, meaning they can dedicate their game to winning their own lane, and helping each other with their synergy.

Jungle + Mid
This combo allows the jungler to focus the mid lane, which can thus lead to more frequent utilization of whatever synergistic picks you choose to go with. Junglers can make any fight a hard time for the enemy laner, allowing your duo queue partner to gain momentum in lane at minimum. Mid has two sides to gank from, making it easier for the jungler to gank when the time is right.

Top + Jungle
This combo, similarly to the previous one, allows the jungler to focus the premade lane and apply pressure. However, top is harder to gank as it is only approachable from one side, meaning there will be less opportunities for the jungler to gank, unless they wish to lose half of their jungle (which is undoubtedly a bad move). That alone makes this pick slightly less effective than Jungle + Mid, but good nonetheless.

ADC + Support
A premade ADC and Support will be by each others sides constantly. This allows for duos to constantly take advantage of their synergy. There is a large downside, however. The duo has no control over the other 3 teammates controlling (or quite possibly losing control of) the other 75% of the map, until after laning phase. ADCs cannot roam effectively, and a support roam will leave the ADC vulnerable to death. Lack of map control makes this my last preferred combination. It's do-able, but less reliable.

Final Thoughts

I need to make it clear that the information in this guide is not the only duo queue synergistic pairs! I am in Silver 4 and have a lot to learn about this game. I wrote this guide as a resource for duos looking to climb - it has mostly helped me learn more about the game, as a lot of time and research went into this guide. Even though I'm just some random Silver player, I hope this guide can provide something useful to anyone reading.
