Theres two ways to play him: Fight, or power farm. There's three ways to clear on Karthus and I will explain all three (I go blue smite every game and I don't buy a pot)

1) Full clear blue start into recall:
Start blue, do a full clear then recall and buy amp tomb with dark seal (this only works with future's market). If you have dark harvest you should look to full clear into ganking or invading. Once you full clear recall you should have enough time to go back to the side you started and fight the scuttle crab with item advantage and win the 1v1.

2) Full clear into crab / ganking
Full clear into ganking or getting crab and then recalling will give you enough gold for lost chapter if you have future's market and dont purchase a pot. Once you have lost chapter you can play super agressive and look to fight.

3) Late invade and splitting map
When you late invade and force start the enemy Jungler's buff, this helps Karthus secure a full clear without getting invaded or punished. Obviously you could invade and fail the invade and it could ruin your game, but if you have a strong level 1 you should look to split the map for bot lane. For example, if you are blueside force start the enemy Jungler's blue. He will be forced to either fight or just give it and take your topside. If he goes for your topside, ignore your topside and just take his camps and your botside and you will successfully not be invaded.

Prioritize farming over ganking as Karthus, you can become very strong if you farm well. He can also solo dragons and Herald very easily

Karthus becomes very strong once he hits level 11. His level 11 and 16 power spikes are very strong because thats when your R starts to do a lot of damage. Power farm until level 11 if you take first stirke. Look around the map and use your ult to help your laners when they're taking on fights or split pushing. If you have a split pusher, you should always be ready to use ur ult for them and they will be able to take any fight.
