Alistar has one of the weekest Level 1 in the Game, punish him. Be carefull as soon as he hits level 3 can easily engage and win the trade or one-shot you if you are below 80% HP. After level 6 even if Alistar engages you should win the 2v2 most of the time.
Bard
Very easy to lane, you outrange him and can punish in Lane with Bombs. Be careful to not AA trade into his Meep AA. Bard is a way better Roamer then you, try to track him down stay bot to soak XP till level 6 and ping your teammates.
Blitzcrank
Skill Matchup ITs all about positioning yourself in the Wave so he cant hook you. Play it fairly passive until Level 3 if you have a strong Adc otherwhise farm 6. As soon as you have some Ruby Crystal you can tank the hook and win 2v2. Dont forget his R Silences and can **** up your Ult timing. Big punish Window is always when the hook is used.
Brand
Fairly Dangerous and a skill matchup if you are able to dodge more spells than him than you win. Ask for Ganks, E into double bomb is always a kill on Brand. Brand lanes might push most likely. You have the better scaling and always win after level 6.
Braum
The easiest Matchup Zilean has in the game. When he shields you can throwh the bombs behind him and they still hit, Play Agressive Level 3+ You are stronger than him and outscale. Just make sure to not get hit by his Q or he can run you down.
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks is one of these Champions you just hate to play against when playing Zilean. He can 1 Shot you in silence from almost 100% HP. Buy many wards and try to always know where he is. Stand behind the eam so he cant ult directly onto you.
Janna
Depending on The elo its between Minor Thread and Extreme. Janna is very lane dominant and can roam pre 6 a lot aswell. The worse the Janna the easier it is to make plays in the early game. Try to ask your jungler for Ganks, she is immobile. Start ALWAYS combos with E on Janna, due to her high base movement speed its hard to hit her with Doublebomb. Potentially take Ignite in lane to have kill pressure.
Karma
She has a lot of Poke, the Lane until Level 6 is very hard. You need to make sure to survive and take some bad backs and give up farm. I recommend First base Dorans Shield As soon as you hit Level 6 there is noway you loose 2v2. Easy ganks, you can just E and doublebomb.
Leona
You have to always respect her E range. Her amount of CC is brutal. She is a very scary Opponent paired up with a agressive Adc because every Leona E is a kill. After 6 you should win 2v2s. You outscale her hard.
Lulu
Similiar to Janna but easier to kill, Skill matchup. Its mainly about preparing a good gank setup and killing them with your Jungler or Mid laner roaming. She scales even and is stronger in lane until Level 6 but you outrange her. Midgame is your time to shine. Level 6-10 you usually win if you arent to behind. Easy target to catch in fights with your maxed E.
Lux
Very hard matchup. Buy first base Dorans Shield Her E has a big hitbox so its almost impossible to dodge. Focus a lot on dodging her Q because it means likely a Oneshot. She is very vulnerable to your Ganksetup since she is pushing and immobile so ask for ganks. You outscale her Level 6.
Morgana
Paired with Caitlyn its going to Even / Major. Besides that its fairly easy. The Binding is a slow Skillshot that you should be able to dodge most of the time. After Level 6 you just win straight up 2v2. Dont Doublebomb to much you just outscale her heavily and the spellshield can **** you up.
Nami
she outdamages you dont try to trade ever in her W range in laning Phase. Setup Ganks, just play for all ins 3v2 / 2v2 if you have a strong allin Adc. You outscale Nami hard.
Nautilus
Respect especially his Level 1. Its about positioning yourself behind the Wave so he cant hook and After Level 6 it should be very free even if he hooks you. Give up some farm when the wave is in the middle and Naut threatens to hook you its fine you outscale.
Pantheon
One of the worst Matchups in the game before Level 3. His W range is 50 Range higher then your E so you have technically no counterplay at all to stop him from gapclosing. His damage is absolutely absurd. You outscale. Roam sometimes. Call your jungler. Probably very easy matchup in low MMR because Pantheons dont push to there limits level 1-3.
Pyke
Pyke is my personal ban. Now that he has good Items again its reaaaly hard in laning phase. He wins Lane and is very hard to gank due to his spellkit. He is better in Roaming and skirmishes. Play the lane as safe as possible and make your way to level 6. In mid game your Champion is a lot stronger then pyke and your Ult gets his Ult on cooldown.
Rakan
I like this matchup a lot i usually put 2 Points in E so my Adc can run out of the W of Rakan. IF you do that consistently he is very lost and can only roam to win the matchup. You can also match the roams and he cant really catch you out. Be carefull of his Level 6 Ult W when you are below 75% HP and dont have exhaust you might get 1 shot and cant R. If his W is out you can ignore the champ and just focus the enemy adc.
Seraphine
But it seems to be Similiar to Janna but she doesnt have such a dominant Lane. Gank her a lot you are way Stronger Level 3+ and in the mid game. Try to engage her whenenver you can. She cant do a lot in All ins vs you. Her Waveclear is absurd so try to gank her pre Lost chapter.
Sett
Very hard matchup. Often Setts look to flash on you Level 1/2 with his E and still have Hexflash. After Level 6 it should be easy to win. Its again about giving up some cs, sit back and outscale. You can roam but be carefull they have a good dive. 2 Points E are good.
Sona
Almost the same as Seraphine fairly easy to stomp in lane but be carefull she outscales you. Call your jungler and dive her over and over post 6. Start with E and she cant dodge your double bombs.Level 3+ always free to kill. Play ingite
Soraka
Take Ignite She has good base bamage you cant really match Again easy to lockdown CC Level 3+. Also call jungler she is easy to gank. Be carefull she outscales you most likely due to her absurd healing numbers. Keep trying to flash E her in teamfights so she dies first.
Zilean
Stop playing Blind pick. Hop in ranked and get your LP.
Swain
Fairly hard to play he has tons of damage and even if you lock him down you will not be able to 1 shot him. I would suggest roaming, he cant really follow and 2v2 seems to be quite hard.
Taric
You can keep him on range and scale for free vs him. Be carefull if he hits a E you loose 70% of your HP. In late game Zilean is really insane to kite Taric. You outrange him hard and can pressure lane. He has tons of Sustain so dont get baited to use a ton of mana in lane.
Thresh
Used to be a very difficult matchup but Thresh isnt good rightnow. If he hits a hook on you or your adc they have easy kill pressure Level 2-5. Play around the wave, let them push. Also very scary are his ganks with lantern and flash. AS soon as you have 6 you should win 2v2. The Champion also outroams you at all stages of the game but you outscale him very very hard.
Yuumi
Its a easy matchup but she scales so well so you need to punish her which is not that easy. Try to roam when you push the wave or atleast put good vision. Abuse weak early game. Level 6 you should also win hard. But be carefull later on its getting difficult. Play flash Ignite
Zyra
Scary until Level 3 than you should win most all ins and you outscaled her on Level 6. Try to not get poked to much and just farm Minions and XP until Level 6. E into doublebomb should be at most cases a kill. Dodging her E is Key. Buy Dorans Shield first base.
Samira
The champ Kills you in every 2v2 bot. Her W blocks your bombs which makes 2v2 unplayable. Avoid and farm up. Play it extra carefull as soon as she snowballs she is unstoppable.
Tristana
She can just jump in your face in the laning phase and you have no way to trade back to that. Stand very safe until Level 3. And fairly safe until level 6. This Champ will still 1 shot Single target all the time but it gets playable post 6. Dont use bombs so you have them to instandly bomb her after jumping him.
Rell
Rell is rather dependant on the ADC matchup. If she is paired with a strong adc you will have a very hard time surviving her W engage. Try to bait it sometimes run out of it with E and doublebomb her. That way you get a heavily winning trade. After 6 make sure to not stick to your adc. IF rell cant W R both of you you should win all 2v2s. In teamfights dont stack with the entire team to give Rell the wombo combo.
Lucian
Lucian Nami is a strong combination that 1 shots you level 2+. Play the lane very respectful and ask for jungle help. Lucian without a nami is not a big thread. he cant dash in when you hold your bombs. Play far back when your bombs are on CD.
Senna
Hard Matchup dont run Grasp, trading Grasp stacks for Senna Stacks is NOT worth, she outtrades, outsustains you and often rushes swiftie boots which are hard to deal with. Setup Jungle ganks and try to kill her, dont feed her early enough and 2v2 3v3 as soon as you have ultimate.
Ashe
Hail of Blades Ashe is a extreme Thread in laning phase. Dont ever go in AA range in 2v2 he just procs his HOB and outtrades you terribly. You outscale the champion very hard hope that your Adc doesnt tilt, grab the CS you can and fight post 6.
Camille
Hail of Blades Camille is a extreme Thread in laning phase her Level 1 E to a wall and trade you is a cheese you just cant play vs. Sit patiently under tower you outscale it very hard. If you are high elo maybe even skill E level 1 and try to outplay there slowpush dive on the 3. wave by flashing her E.
Maokai
Maokai is now very popular since many patches. 14.5 he finally received nerfs to not be way to opressive anymore. Try to punish him very hard Level 1 he cant win, even if he W in. He will rush swifties and get Trailblazer and be very fast. He has tons of CC lockdown so respect his flash W as gank setup. As soon as you have Giants belt tank his CC combo and go on enemy Adc and you should 2v2 level 5+ very hard. If you play tank Zilean make sure to tank one of Maokais ults for your teammates so they can stand behind you and not get rooted.
Xerath
Skillmatchup, whoever hits more spells will win. You hardcore outscale xerath so dont get to focussed on trying to win lane. Get a first base Dorans shield in and win 2v2 always level 6+. He is easy gankable with the amount of CC Zilean provides, so ping your jungle to play for that.
Aphelios
I like having an Aphelios his stun is a great setup for a Double bomb and when he has the White+ Blue/Red gun he does tons of damage when you CC the opponent. He is also a great hypercarry who can go melee and receive your Ult.
Ashe
Very good she is early game Strong and carries you through the early levels of the lane. Her dps is decent and your speedups provide Ashe the mobility she needs to be a strong DPS in Fights. Also her Ult is a great Setup for your combo.
Caitlyn
She is lane strong and carries you kindoff through the lane. She works also as a Hypercarrie and benefits a lot from CC and speedups you give her. She is usually further back in the fights and not a great Ult target. Its hard and often not possible for Caitlyn to time there traps with your double bomb.
Draven
The best Adc you can have as Zilean. He is lane dominant, carried you in the lane gets huge benefits from Speedups and when you cc the opponent. A Draven also wants to get very close to the oppoents and be the Target so you can just ult him afterwards. If you want to duo an Adc take a Draven player.
Ezreal
Its fairly good, he doesnt benefit from your speedups. But if you slow the enemys its very easy for Ezreal to land his Q in Fights. You both scale extremely way and he can safely farm with Q in your weak early game pre 6
Jinx
Jinx is a fine lane partner to scale up with in lane. You both want to farm and have great CC setup for a junglegank to kill the opponent. Its becomes very op if you mange to survive the early game.
Kai'Sa
Kaisa gets stacks on her passive for your double bomb ofcourse and has huge DPS if you CC the Target. I see it often misstimed with the Kaisa R and Zilean R which goes horrible wrong. In general to close Range to play with i personally dont like Kaisa.
Kalista
The worst Adc to have. Kalista needs someone to go in for her and thats simply not you. She wants to play agressive from Level 1 and Zilean feels very useless in that spot.
Kog'Maw
Kog maw is weak in lane, Yes he could need the mobility but to be really strong he should get a shield Support and Zilean can not really be that. In teamfights if he is the target you ult he will just be out of position and die again.
Lucian
its great he wants to go close range and benefits a lot from movement speed. You can also play him as someone who goes really deep and than receives your ult It works fine. He is not that type of Hypercarry adc that you want.
Miss Fortune
Really great she benefits a lot from your movement Speed, Her E is a setup for your double bomb. Also its very nice in lane to do: E into double bomb and MF ults on that they easily loose 60%+ HP
Samira
She can dash in and travel your bombs, likes your ult and gets value from movement speed. The only thing is her passive wants a heavy hard CC support which Zilean is not.
Senna
Nice adc to play with, she provides you with sustain, her W and Q are great setup for your bombs and she can also use your movement speed buffs. Fasting Senna is very good with Zilean.
Sivir
Both scaling Champions, you can get easily dove and Movement speed is again overcap with the Sivir ult. She can use your CC to autoattack alot and Hit her Q guranteed but its still horrible.
Tristana
Horrible Tristana wants to play extremely agressive first level, she cant use your movement speed at all since she just junp resets. Your cc is nice but she wants a tank Supp that engages for her.
Varus
You can be the setup for the Varus skillshots but also Varus R can be setup for you. He has great DPS with no mobility where you come in place. If he goes Lethality your E -> Varus R -> Double bomb -> e is a infinite CC you can likely kill anyone 100-0 level 6+
Vayne
Usually bad but depending on the vayne. Really good vaynes win most lanes and they can E enemys into your doublebombs when you throwh them behind really advanced but strong combo. If the vayne is top Vayne + Zilean teamfights 3+ Items are very strong. Speed her and she can 1v9
Xayah
Pretty good she also has tons of DPS which gets effective when you speed her. Also its nice to CC the enemys and Xayah can farm a lot of feathers behind them for a clutch E while they stand still. Sadly Xayah isnt so good in the meta rightnow.
Jhin
Insane adc, can safely farm with you, dont get baited to speed the Jhin to often in fights most Jhin players simply wont be able to controle there character at that speed, run out of position and die. He has a nice follow up on your CC
you can run up to the enemy when Jhin ults and gurantee that he hits all shots.
Kayn
Kayn benefits a lot from your movement speed and is a great hypercarry. He can always stack full conquerer and get a revive if he is not fed enough yet to 1v5 without R. A great Champion to duoQ.
Master Yi
Master yi is one of the strongest hypercarries in the game. A big problem due to many champions beeing very mobile rightnow is that yi cant stick that close to his enemys. Zilean completely fills that role and gives him great peel. Playing duoQ with a Master Yi jungle player is something i definitely recommend.
Zeri
Zeri benefits alot from your Movementspeed. You have a rough laning phase but a classic 2v5 Partner if the zeri is good.
Smolder
Smolder is a great Hypercarry to play with. She can safely farm with Q W in the early game and your Speed ups complement her otherwhise fairly immobile kit. Be carefull in the early game but Minute 20+ you become 2v5 Monsters

WORK IN PROGRESS first of all a disclaimer i try to update it everyday rightnow and i am sure there are many spelling mistakes, or suboptimal phrasing.

Hello. My Name is Biotic. I started playing League of Legends in 2015 and peaked Challenger in Season 7 for the first time. I played multiple roles and Champions but had big success with Thresh Support and Heimerdinger Top/Mid back then. I experimented with many Roles and Champions and fell in love with Zilean at the end of Season 7. I ended up with a 35% WInrate over more then 200 Games but wanted to learn and master the Chronokeeper. Since the end of Season 10 ive been frequently playing in Challenger with Zilean. I have roughly three million mastery points on Zilean between various accounts on the EUW server. During Season 11, I also managed to hit Rank 10 on my main during MSI. I became popular again in the recent time by playing Warmogs Grasp Zilean to 1000LP EUW.
Why Zilean you may ask? Zilean is one of the most unique Champions among the Supports. While having one of the oldest Kits in League of Legends Zilean is without any major Changes a absolute powerhouse since 4+ Years. His Unique way of entchanting, high movementspeed to roam and rotate, heavy Ability Haste scaling and ofcourse the revive makes him one of the most obnoxious champions to play against. If you like a entchanter with a Unique Playstyle ,one of the best scalings in the game and beeing the Carry in Teamfights with a clutch Revive Zilean is your Champion.
Who is this guide for?
In this guide I want to show the most effective way to play Zilean Support against good players I win with this item build against high Challenger, LEC and ERL players who play League of legends professionally. Although I am firmly convinced that this Zilean item build / rune set is even better in Iron Platinum than in high elo. I know the comments are coming: but I have bad teammates in silver 4 and I have to play Aery, Ludens into Rabadons to carry my **** Team: No you are simply wrong and i cant help you if you believe that.

Before we get started i often stream my soloQ Adventure in High Challenger and sometimes on smurf on twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/bioticzilean If you feel like there is something i left out in the guide come in my Streamchat i am always down to answer and explain my thoughts on Zilean. WORK IN PROGRESS
Zilean Passive:
Time in a bottle: Zilean generates experience every 5 Seconds. When he has enough to level up an allied Champion, he can select them to level them up. A successful channel levels up the target and rewards Zilean the same amount of experience for himself as well.
How to use Zilean passive?
Runes
In the next section I explain in detail why I use each individual rune.
First Row resolve options:
Grasp of the Undying: I recommend Grasp vs Melee Supp and Guardian vs Range Supp. The Zilean bomb alone is enough to fully charge Grasp and you can easily stack it in laning Phase. Grasp increases your poke in lane, heals you a little bit and most importandly generates max HP that counts towards your Warmog's Armor . It also adds decent damage to your Autoattacks in Teamfights since its scaling with max HP
Guardian: Guardian is another option if the game is slower and you simply cant stack grasp as much. The rune helps you trade in Laning phase and survive big Bursts in Skirmishes or dives. Make sure to only proc Guardian when you really want it to proc due to its high cooldown. Keep in mind that taking Guardian over Grasp delays your Warmogs passive likely by 1-2 levels which can be worth considering that the Guardian shield scales with max HP which you are getting a ton of.
second row resolve:
Font of Life: healing your Teammates if they attack targets CCD by you scaling with Zileans max HP makes Font of Live a very strong Rune for our Fulltank Zilean in Teamfights and laning phase. Demolish and Shield Bash cant be used by Zilean at all so this is a no-brainer choice.
third row resolve:
Second Wind: heals you after taking damage for 4% of you missing HP making this a great rune if you are buying a lot of HP. Second Wind helps you sustain in hard matchups working like a 2. Dorans Shield and scaling incredible well into the game. Bone Plating giving you a flat amount of Damage reduction (already worse then Second wind after Giant's Belt. The third rune choice Conditioning only working Minute 12+ not helping you in early game at all which is our main focus to survive not beeing an option either.
fourth row resolve:
Overgrowth : gives you max HP standing nearby dieing Minions. This rune is a must to reach the 1300 Bonus HP you need to make use oft he warmogs as soon as you buy it. You are not healing your Teammates enough to utilize Revitalize and Unflinching is after the rework a completely dead rune dont take that on any Champion.
secondary Tree
Sorcery : Being the only options right now due to the lack of Mana Reg / total mana and Ability haste. Manaflow Band helps you with your mana management in the early game and throughout the entire game. Zileans abilitys are very strong so Transcendence is a no brainer getting more Ability haste to press your Buttons more often.
Shards
We take Ability Haste, Health Scaling and flat HP in the Shards. Zilean has awfull AP scalings so there is no need for any AP from the shards. Yes even if you play in Silver Elo you will end up dealing more Damage securing yourself free Ability haste you cant get otherwhise from the runes. Double HP Shards are used to reach the 1300 Bonus HP needed to activate the Warmog's Armor.
Items
First base purchase:
Doran's Ring: The optimal first base on Zilean Support is buying a Dorans Ring in 90% of the matchups. You probably wonder why is that. Dorans Ring is extraordinary gold efficient, boosts your laning phase power significantly by its !18! AP for 400 gold, the 80 HP needed to complete your Warmogs at around level 8 and a good amount of extra mana sustain this itembuild otherwhise lacks.
Doran's Shield: A alternative to the Doran's Ring in heavy poke matchup. Doran's shield lets you heal a few HP after getting hit by something making is great against long range poke lanes. Again a very gold efficient item to boost your otherwise fairly week laning phase and complete your warmogs a bit earlie due to his bonus HP.
Boots
Ionian Boots of lucidity: are the only viable Boots on Zilean. This itembuild is on the fairly low end in Ability Haste compared to all other Zilean itembuilds. We cant miss out on these 15 Ability Haste and the summoner spell haste is a nice bonus to be able to use summoners more often. Complete your Boots before Warmogs.
The question ive been answering atleast 100 Times every stream wtf Biotic why are you buying Warmog's Armor?
Warmog's Armor: It is fairly complex and hard to describe with words so i will link clips showing the value of the item below aswell. The big trick with Zilean over the years has always been to play as offensively as possible and as passively as necessary. Warmog's armor now completely overrides a basic principle of League of legends. I can play so aggressively once I have it ready that I lose a maximum of 99% of my health and trade against X% of the opponent's health and since I just regain it, i can not lose trading. This fact forces extremely passive positioning by my opponents, or permanent grouping because there is simply no other answer. But there is another special case: Teeamfights. With this item build, I can finally play engage Zilean without dying/ self ulting. The tankiness allows me to run in with E, use Bomb, 99% slow into double bomb on an enemy carry, lose up to 90% HP in the meantime and my team can follow up. Now I simply run into the backline, can continue to travel bombs over my teammates in the fight and speed them up while warmogs regs me full again and I can continue fighting in front as soon as i regenerated some HP.
frozen heart : is considered by the majority of the community a simply OP item. Providing you with 70 armor, a absurdly high amount creating the fulltank Zilean vs AD heavy teamcomps you really want to be. Additionally the item gives 20 Ability haste, as most of us still know from old seasons it’s the most importand stat for Zilean to keep spamming his abilitys that are so valueable. Our favourite Time Chronokeeper can get very mana hungry in extended fights so the 400 extra mana come in handy aswell. What makes frozen heart ontop of its already insane stats the OP item is his 20% Attackspeed slow for nearby enemys cripping all autoattacking enemys.
Abyssal Mask: is our item choice vs heavy magic Damage. Providing us with 60 MR a insanely high amount that allows us to deal as example with the Akalis diving into us and face tanking her spells, or the Azir DPS. In Addition to the high amount of MR and HP the item gives us we are getting 10 more Ability Haste we are seeking on Zilean to use more of our spells.
locket of the iron solari: is a great Item against burst Teamcomps especially recommended vs Karthus to be able to Locket his Ult. Locket also provides you Armor and MR so you get mixed resistances as a 3. Item for a extremely cheap price of 2200 Gold. The 10 Ability haste on Locket are the cherry on the cake.
4. Item Option
Anathema's Chains:
Build Anathema's Chains if the enemy team has a single important target that you need to take down in order to win fights, or if there's only one threat of a damage type. By that, I mean that if the enemy team is all AD but has one fed AP champ, don't bother with an MR item just for that one champion - build Anathema's and put it on them.
Imperial Mandate:
was also changed for the new 2024 season. When the mark that it applies is removed, it now does 12% current HP damage and give 25% movement speed for you and whoever else on your team procs it, for 2 seconds. That's a great for Zilean, I t's basically a buff for him since you apply it so easily and just boost your self and your teammembers while still doing great damage for almost no effort. It also gives you Ability Haste, which is a stat we really want on Zilean.
