Champion Build Guide
Welcome to MagmaSmoothie's Urgot Guide!
Hello people. My name is Magmasmoothie and I have been playing League of Legends for maybe 10 years. The roles I used to play are mid/top/adc but lately I have been focusing solely on the top lane. I have won some local tournaments and my peaks are challenger EuNE and Master EuW(430lp). I recently got a better ping and I was thinking of trying to reach a high rank on EuW. I was a gnar otp in the early season 11 but after the w nerf(11.6) and me depending on my teammates in the teamfights really made me dislike playing gnar so I wanted to find something else. A friend of mine suggested me to try out Urgot and I have been playing him ever since. I made a smurf on EuW playing only Urgot and according to League of Graphs I was #1 Urgot in the world when he was meta, so before his w nerf when he was considered the best top laner so everybody was playing him. ( Here photo of Urgot #1 )

Difficulty - 7/10 Just like most champs in League Urgot is difficult to master but I when it comes to the basics he is one of the easiest. The reason that he is considered one of the easiest champions in low elo is because you see Urgot players having W on permanently at level 9 and he just kills everybody around him and people just think that you just have to move around and you kill people. That's not the case in high elo, you have to do the w reset to maximise your damage which i am going to talk about later in the abilities section and that takes alot of time to master. You have to play hundreds of games to understand when to keep w on , when to do the w reset and when to toggle off to do the final auto attack. I played thousands of games on Urgot and I still haven't mastered this skill, I would say im 95-98% in mastering this. Another factor that made me put him at 7/10 is that you have 3 skill shots in your kit with very high cooldowns, in a teamfight you are most probably going to use them all only once , max twice, which means it is very important to hit them ESPECIALLY your e and r.
Fun - 9/10 I played thousands of games with Urgot and I am still having fun playing this champion and I think that says a lot. I get a dopamine rush every single time I hit level 9 because of how much fun it is to use your W resets. Countless times I destroyed enemy wards because they placed them next to me when I had W on. Hitting E flash combo on enemy 10-0 adcs is so much fun and the 1vs2 you can do in late game because opponents underestimate your E still happens to me in high master elo
Viability - 7/10 - Viability always depends on the meta . At the time of making this guide which is preseason of season 13 Urgot is definitely viable. Urgot is a great blind pick because even in bad matchups he can farm with his q and there a lot of item choices to help you with those bad matchups. And even though you can get counterpicked because Urgot is a very good late game champ you can shine in teamfights. Another viable thing is that Urgot counters a lot of solo q champions like Trydamere,WW, Irelia,GP,Riven. What keeps him from being on the top of viability is his weakness in early game and that he is super weak against dash/range comps which is why he isn't played so much in Professional competitive games, because a good pro team will make him utterly useless by making a comp against him
Laning Phase - 5/10 - Overall I would say Urgot's laning phase is one of the weakest on top lane. He can be strong levels 1-3 against very few matchups but in most cases you have to play safe. The good thing is that he isn't weak enough for the enemy to fight you in your wave because of your e. The reason that he is weak in laning phase is because his kit is based around his Passive leg shotguns. The cooldown on his shotguns in 30 seconds in the early laning phase and you are forced to use them to farm, therefore most of the time you won't have shotguns to deal tons of damage to the enemy because this is where all the damage comes from. With all your shotguns up you can try to go for a kill but if you miss either q or E you are most probably dead because if you dont hit your q then your w will hit enemy minions instead of the champion and if you miss your E then you miss alot of damage because you won't be able to use your shotguns efficiently. What keeps him from having an even worse laning phase is his Q. You can use this to farm from far away and scale into late.
Teamfighting - 9/10 Urgot has a lot of tools to make him strong in teamfights. You have the tankiness to defend your carries, Crowd control with q and e to catch enemies or defend your teammates and an ultimate that was made for teamfights. If you have flash you can catch the enemy fed carry with your E which most of the time leads to an insta kill especially if your team can follow up. What keeps Urgot from being a 10/10 is that he can get kited pretty easily and unfortunately most of the time your teammates don't understand how important it is to help you proc your ultimate fear and they do not help you. This happens even in extremely high elo and it can get very annoying if your teammates don’t help you proc your ultimate because they were focusing somebody else.
When to pick Urgot:
-When in need of Attack damage
-When in need for frontline
-When in need for split pusher
-When you want to counter pick (see threats)
-When enemies have lots of melees
-When you have good engage on your team
When not to pick Urgot or good indicator to dodge:
-When enemies have already picked a counter pick(see threats)
-When enemies have lots of ranged and mobile champs
-When your team is full attack damage
+ Can be very tanky + Can farm in bad matchups ![]() + Can be a tank shredder + Good Split Push + Strong Team fights + Insane Powerspikes + Easy Mechanics |
- Good players will play around your E - Quite bad early game (except level 1 with E) - It is difficult to help your jungler because of his slow speed and zero mobility abilities. - Has lots of skill shots in kit - Fighting very fast champions like udyr can be a struggle because hitting your q,e and r is difficult and they can also make sure they get hit by only 1 of your legs(passive) |
TP : I use this in 95% of games. Like most scaling champs this spell helps you miss less CS(creep score) which results in you missing less experience and gold which is very important for all champions in the game but even more important for scaling champions like Urgot who needs items and levels. I would also like to add that because Urgot’s kit has a lot of aoe you automatically push the wave by farming which makes you vulnerable to ganks, because of that when you get ganked and you lose a lot of hp you will want to recall and tp back to lane full health.TP is also great for split pushing champions like Urgot because you can split push a lane and tp if needed for an important fight.
IGNITE : In general I get this when I want to get ahead early game which is when my teammates are more early game oriented or when im playing against a heavily scaling comp. You can also get this for its Grievous Wounds usage but personally I don’t find this efficient because it will result in you wanting to fight only when you have ignite up.I would rather get an executioners sword or bramble. I would also like to point out that junglers are more likely to gank a top laner without tp.
GHOST : This can be used when playing against a team with a lot of ranged champions so that you can reach them easier. I also like this against Darius or Olaf so that you can survive when Darius uses his Ghost or when Olaf uses his ultimate
|
|
Dorans Shield: I take this when playing against a ranged champion who I know is unkillable during early lane phase.
Cull : I never take this for start but I take this most of the time when I go back and I have enough gold for it. I do not take this when I am playing against risky/aggressive matchups. The passive heal works with your W which makes it extra good on Urgot.
Boots : Nothing too complex. Armor boots against heavy ad, Magic resist boots against heavy ap and keep in mind when an enemy champion is extremely behind there is no need to get resistances for him. I would like to say that boots of swiftness is very underrated on Urgot. I get this against matchups that can run me down like Darius/Olaf , against heavy slow team and also when im very far ahead because most of the time when Urgot is ahead the only issue he has is reaching the enemies.
Mythics
Jaksho : For now needs more testing but for sure im going to be getting this when we have mountain drake/s.
Eclipse : My favorite item for Urgot and the default option. Everything it provides is greatly beneficial to Urgot except the Omnivamp. It helps with dealing more damage, reaching enemies with the bonus movement speed and the shield is also always useful. I DO NOT get this only conditionally meaning when enemy compositions force me to go something else.
Heartsteel : I’m not a fan of this item on Urgot. The health is for sure really good on Urgot but the thing is in my opinion there is always something better you can get. One might say that it is good against tanky comp but I believe it is just better to get eclipse against these kinds of comps.
Iceborn gauntlet : Great item on Urgot. I take this when against heavy ad team because of the huge armor it gives.
Stridebreaker : I take this when against ranged compositions. The attack speed is kinda useless on Urgot but the ability haste in THIS case is not so bad because whenever you get this item is when playing against ranged comp and you will want to Q as soon as you can.
Trinity Force : I take this ONLY WITH hullbreaker which is when I will want to split push all game long.
Goredrinker : I never take this on Urgot. The ability haste is useless and I feel like on Urgot the active is pretty bad because you are either extremely strong against the matchups you will want this item so you don’t need it (eg Riven ) or you are so weak against the matchup that this active won’t help you (eg Darius)
Prowler’s Claw : This item needs more testing so I don’t want to talk about it too much but I feel like this can be good in some matchups.
Divine Sunderer : I never take this item. If I want a tank shredding item I would just get Eclipse
Titanic Hydra : A necessity on Urgot every single game. This helps with tankiness, damage and wave clear. Urgot’s wave clear gets very awkward without a tiamat item so its very helpful to farm. One more thing I would point out is that fighting in waves without a Hydra is very bad since your W will hit minions instead of the enemy unless you hit Q ofc but even if you do hit Q at some point your W will start hitting minions again. In general I truly believe it is a must on every game.
Ravenous Hydra : Not a fan of this item unless it is overtuned just like it was in patch 12.21/12.22 but in this case any item can be good on Urgot if its overtuned. I believe Titanic is always better on Urgot since the health is more important for Urgot than the extra damage. I guess this can be good when you want to snowball and combined with Jak’sho this can be fun.
Black Cleaver : Another item that is great on Urgot, I get this 80% of my games. This item helps with tankiness, more damage and most importantly helps you with tank shredding and proccing your shotguns faster since you get extra movement speed. I do not get this when enemies have heavy ranged composition which in this case I prefer getting more tanky items or movement speed like Force of Nature or Dead Mans Plate.
Hullbreaker : A MUST when you want to split push. I’m going to talk about when to Split push later in the guide.
Sterak’s Gage : Very good late game item if not the best. This gives you the best stats Urgot wants , ad and health. The lifeline passive is also great since you always stack a lot of health. I get this when enemies have a balanced ad/mr team and I’m not looking to stack a specific resistance.
Thornmail : Not the best item since you need to hit an immobilizing effect to reach the maximum grievous wounds, something only your E can do which is kind of unreliable and will only apply to 1 enemy if you hit it. I only get this item when enemies are full ad and with a lot of heal but most of the time I get bramble vest and then sell it to get something else.
Force of Nature : Not much to say about this item other than it is good conditionally. I get this when playing against heavy magic damage comp.
Chempunk Chainsword : I get this more often than Thornmail against heavy hyealing comp since it is more reliable.
Death’s Dance : I get this item when playing against ad/assassin team comp.
Serylda’s Grudge : I never get this item. There are better items to get when you want to shred enemies armor like Black Cleaver/Eclipse and even though it helps with reaching ranged champions with the ability haste and passive slow I believe it is more important to get something tanky instead because they will just one shot you.
Gargoyle Stoneplate : I get this late game when we have mountain drakes and when enemies have a balanced ad/ap team.
Randuin’s Omen : I get this against Tryndamere or when enemies have 2+ crit champions. Very good situational item.
Guardian’s Angel : I get this when I’m ahead and against ad team. If im full build I always sell this after the passive procs to get something else like Sterak’s or Gargoyle.
Spirit Visage : I never get this item but if you go ravenous/jak sho build I guess you can get this.
Sunfire Cape : Since I always take Titanic Hydra I never get this item since the Titanic is mo9re than enough to one shot the waves. It provides good amount of armor but I believe there are better armor items to get.
Turbo Chemtank : I get this when against heavy ap/ranged composition
Dead Man’s Plate : I get this when against heavy ad/ranged composition
Anathema’s chains : I only get this when enemies have only 1 fed champion which in turn I can use this on him to shut him down.
Maw of Malmortius : I get this when against 3+ ap damage dealers
Gameplan : In general you never want to fight him unless you are extremely ahead(1.5k gold at least). Pre-6 just farm and dodge his Q's but keep in mind that he isn't much stronger than you so if he is playing too agressive you can always E him in your wave especially if he has Q on cooldown. Keep in mind that he will try to run for his axes during fights and trades so try to kite him away from them. Like most hard matchups on top lane sometimes you just can't do nothing when enemy freezes so try to gank mid or take jungle camps(yours or enemy camps depending on where your/enemy jungler is) or maybe ask jungler for help but this is very unreliable in solo q.
Runes/Items :
Scaling runes since you want to outperform him in teamfights later on. I recommend getting boots of Swiftness so you can out run him when he chases you down with ult and ghost and delay his axe slows.

The value of dragons always depends on what champions you have on your side and what champions the enemies have but I am going to rate them for an “average “ game of Urgot
Ranked from best to worst:
Chemtech
Cloud
Mountain
Inferno
Ocean
Hextech
Chemtech : This dragon gives Tenacity heal and shield power, all which are very important for Urgot excluding heal unless you get ravenous/hydra or Jaksho. Tenacity is very important for juggernaut/bruiser champions like Urgot and you also shield in your kit (E) and also Steraks! This dragon is extra important if enemies have a lot of cc or if you have healing supports on your team. I’m more inclined on getting ravenous hydra if we get this early.
Cloud : This dragon gives slow resist and out of combat movement speed. Out of combat is always useful because you can get to move faster and roam more and slow resist is really good against enemy comp with slows. I rank this 2nd because the slow resist is really good on Urgot who has difficulty reaching enemies.
Mountain : This dragon increases armor and magic resist. The reason I ranked this higher than the inferno buff is because I believe the extra tankiness is better than the extra damage because Urgot one shots anyway with black cleaver + hydra. When I get this I’m more inclined on getting tanky items and especially gargoyle stoneplate.
Inferno : This dragon increases attack damage. Not much to say for this one, you deal more damage and you wave clear faster but you don’t get heavy attack damage items so it doesn’t matter that much on Urgot.
Ocean : This dragon restores missing health every 5 seconds. This dragon is one of the best if not the best to get during laning phase because that’s when you want to restore more health so you are not forced to recall. Other than that it is kind of useless unless you are playing against a poke enemy team.
Hextech : The easiest ranking I could ever give. Attack speed and cd are both really bad for Urgot.
The reason why I gave you my thoughts on dragons is because I believe it is important to know when to contest dragons especially in high elo. For example it could be more worth it to get a rift instead of a late ocean drake or it could be more worth it to split push top instead of helping team get a hextech drake. Keep in mind there are a lot of variables involved in this , meaning it depends a lot of how the game is going, your team comp and enemy comp, to decide this kind of stuff.
I hope you learned something from this guide and you found something to help you become a better Urgot player. If you enjoyed this guide an upvote would be greatly appreciated :)
