Very hard lane if the Camille is somewhat competent. She can win both the short and long trades. W her E, silence her then walk away. Do not take her Q2 or you will get significantly chunked.
Darius
This guy is a real Chad. If the Darius is bad, you can actually win this lane. However, all of them take ghost and will attempt to run you down level 1. Don’t let him 5 stack you or it will likely mean your death. Take ignite just in case he does try to all in you from nowhere as it’s your best chance of coming out even/beating him.
Heimerdinger
Just another annoying ranged toplaner, though I rarely see him in top these days, the one game out of one hundred that you do fight a Heimerdinger top will make you want to ban him every game from here on. Just play passive and farm as best as you can. Jungle assistance might be able to grant a kill, but be careful, his 1v2s are actually very strong.
Sett
So, Sett. He’s really strong during laning phase. Garen is too, Sett just has more in his kit to beat the 1v1. The better player can win this matchup, however, if you make one mistake, you’re dead, or forced to flash. If you want to fight him, W his E, start with a spin, then Q him and walk away, that way, he can’t instant W you.
Tryndamere
This guys is pretty much your hard counter. Lots of consistent fast damage, and way to heal quickly after a trade, an AD reducer, and gap closer that deals a pretty good amount of damage, and an Ult that basically makes your Ult pointless vs him. He will push all game and be better at it then you, so your best bet here is to TANK TF UP. Bramble and Steelcaps should be your first 2 items. From there, an early stopwatch isn’t a bad idea, as you can pop it after he Ults so you can wait it out, then kill him after. Overall though, pretty miserable matchup. Not a bad idea to ban him.
Vayne
An ADC with true damage, a kiting ability, and a way to stun you if she hits it right. On top of that, she also has invisibility, making it even more fun to fight her, which is why I wouldn’t. I recommend farming what you can and playing hyper passive. Just don’t giver her kills, or that snowball with never stop rolling.
Yorick
Yorick is a pretty bad Garen matchup. He does a lot of damage and is pretty damn tacky, but the thing that really jacks Garen up is his cage. Garen has no way out of it, so he can just cage you then kill you while you’re in it. Another lane where you take the shield and farm what you can.
Akali
A good Akali is very obnoxious to play against. She’ll look to constantly poke you down with Qs, and if you try to engage on her, she’ll drop shroud and hit you while you can’t see her. Plus, her ult slaps hard. D shield and farm. Hit her with a Q here and there and take a quick Q-E trade, but don’t overextend it.
Cho'Gath
Abuse him early on, but try not to get kited too much by the constant Qs he’ll be dropping. He outscales you really hard and will eventually get too tanky for you to do much into, so be aggressive early and try your best not to let him regen off last hitting creeps.
Fiora
A good Fiora is hard to play against. Her true damage plus healing is very formidable in the 1v1. If you fall behind, rush a heal cut against her. Your best chance to beat her is to start the fight with E, as it will bait out most Fioras' riposte, then Q.
Gangplank
Somewhat of a skill matchup, but he definitely has a lot of poke which makes it slightly favored on his side. If they take First Strike instead of grasp, you'll almost always win the all in unless you face tank his barrels. Ignite him early in the fight since his W plus corrupting is a surprising amount of sustain.
Gnar
His range + tankiness make him hard to deal with as Garen. Be mindful of Mega-Gnar, has it makes him even tankier and grants him access to a lot more cc.
Jayce
He outranges you hard. He'll look to poke you down, then all in you with hammer form and kill you in one big burst. Just play safe and wait for jungle assistance.
Kennen
Too much range and CC for Garen to deal with. With his ult, you'll take a lot of damage while being unable to move. D shield start, play safe and farm.
Lillia
I've fought a Lillia top a handful of times and can honestly say this matchup is pretty awful. She gets so much move speed that you'll never catch her, whilst dealing a lot of damage thanks to her true damage on her Q and her natural % Max HP burn. If she misplays, a kill is obtainable, but very difficult, as she can just hit you with an ability, Ult you, then run. Just farm it up and ask for jungle assistance.
Lucian
Lucian top is a pretty tough laner for almost any melee top. I will say this, however, if you catch him with Stridebreaker slow and get a full E and Q off, he dies very quickly. The biggest threat here is getting poked down hard during laning phase, which will happen, so try to obtain what farm you can and play back.
Mordekaiser
Some see this as a direct counter to Garen. I don't personally, as I think it's winnable if played right, but it is difficult. The problem is during an extended fight he'll get a massive shield and heal from his W. Also, if you get pulled into his ult, it will become very difficult to fight him and you can't escape, so most of the time you just end up dying. QSS rush is sometimes viable, but don't just immediately do it. Look at the rest of the team and determine if it's right for the game. Otherwise, don't bother fighting him and just farm, and do your best to dodge his E or he will be able to force a fight on you.
Olaf
Real tough lane. The nice thing is, if you don't feed him a lot of kills, then he ends up falling off during teamfights and an underfed Olaf dies relatively quickly to your ADC. Just play it safe here, you don't want to risk a fight into him as you'll likely die unless you're ahead.
Pantheon
Another lane threat more then anything. You'll be able to beat him after 2-3 items, barring him not getting super fed, but early on, you will loose the fight.
Quinn
Quinn is like Lucian, if you manage to Stridebreaker her and then hit her with the full E + Q combo, she'll die real fast. Quinn has several tools, however, to disengage you. Your best bet is to chill and farm.
Rumble
His flame shred hurts a lot, so don't fight him while he's casting it. If you play better then him, you can beat him, but against a practiced Rumble, you'll likely loose lane.
Teemo
Ah, the ole' Teemo pick into Garen. Very annoying lane, but winnable if you bait his W an land Q + Stridebreaker + E
Urgot
Urgot is another pretty tough lane. He builds full tank and does a ****load of damage, complete with an execute. He will outscale you and generally be better in teamfights. I would recommend trying to outpush him after laning phase.
Volibear
His massive amount of sustain during a fight makes contesting him difficult. Try to W his stun. If you don't, you'll take half of your health in one combo. Also, do your best to dodge his E.
Aatrox
Pretty much a skill matchup. Take ignite so you can have good kill pressure on him and weave in and out of his Qs. If he lands W on you, press Q and get out of the box.
Dr. Mundo
Old Mundo was real easy to fight, but new Mundo is a fair bit harder. He has very good sustain and pretty decent damage. Hide behind minions to not tank every one of his Qs. Carry ignite so that you have good kill pressure on him, it pretty much shuts him down from all ining you.
Illaoi
If she lands E on you, walk away. That's the only chance she has of winning the trade. If she misses it, fight her, you'll smash her without it. Same concept with Mundo where you want to be behind minions so that you don't get hit by her E.
Kayle
In your favor early, although she's honestly somewhat hard to kill thanks to her W giving her healing and move speed. Don't let her touch the wave for free pre 6. After that, it'll be hard to catch her. She outscales you hard so the more advantage you build early the better spot you'll be in come mid game.
Kled
Try not to fight him if he landed the full Q pull on you. That grevious wounds he applies to you from that is enough to push the fight in his favor. If you dodge it successfully, you can fight him.
Malphite
Boring lane. He's gonna Q you then run. Fortunately, nobody normally picks Malph as a counter to Garen, but if they do, just get ready to farm a lot, as he can just decide to not trade you. He ends up with lots of armor mid-late game, so hopefully you have a good AP/True damage source on your team.
Nasus
Will start off in your favor, but if you don't get a massive lead on him, but 150 stacks and sheen he can pop Ult on you and run you down pretty effectively, and he'll be too tanky for you to fight. That being said, if you DO get a sizable lead, the lane is very easy. He'll just end up being far too squishy to stand up to you. Be aggressive early and push the edge you hold over him as much as you can.
Renekton
Skill matchup entirely. If you W his empowered W, you can win the trade. Be mindful of his Ult, however, he is fairly strong while in it.
Ornn
His W does a fairly solid amount of damage. Stay away from his pillar and save your W for his W. His trades are pretty strong and he is very tanky, so you might actually struggle a bit vs him.
Poppy
She's looking to poke you down with passive + grasp. Don't stand near walls, or you'll get stunned and significantly chunked down.
Shen
Before his nerfs in 12.2, I would've put this as a Major, maybe even Extreme matchup for Garen. But his Q was hit fairly hard and his dueling against champs is significantly weaker. W his taunt and start spinning when he goes in so that when he casts his W zone, you're stacking damage and Conqueror. You'll win an extended trade against now no problem.
Singed
Kind of an annoying lane. He'll fling you then run if it looks like he's loosing the trade. His Ult makes him crazy tanky and fast. DON'T chase him, no matter what, as that is what he wants. Honestly, unless either side makes a major mistake, kills won't really be had either way unless jungle assistance is involved.
Sion
His tankiness and W shield, along with slows and a stun if he gets his Q fully charged make him able to short trade against you effectively. If he's about to land full Q on you, W it, or, if he begins charging it and you're close enough, Q him to stop it. If you can drag the fight out, you'll win early, but come mid-late game, he becomes extremely hard to kill alone.
Sylas
If he steals your Ult, he's going to looks to fight you, and actually has a good chance, since his W is a point and click heal that gets better the lower he is. W his E2 and don't get hit by his Q explosion.
Vladimir
He has lots of sustain and outranges you. If you try to fight him, he'll just puddle away. Take ignite so if he tried all ining you with his ult, you can fight back. A good Vlad is very annoying to fight.
Wukong
This is a tricky one. He gets free armor stacking, and the double knock-up on his Ult is fairly strong. Start spinning if he E dashes into you as almost every Wukong will E dash and instant W and look for the double Q with the clone. If you can W his Q, you actually win the trade pretty hard, but it is fairly difficult to read as the cast time is super fast.
Gwen
The only thing you have to watch out for is the level 1 IF she has lethal tempo + ignite. You'll loose that pretty hard. Once you have completed Berserker's Greaves, she stands very little chance. Start with E during the fight, then Q and you'll chunk her pretty effectively.
Irelia
If you're fighting an Irelia one trick, you have to be cautious, but then again, that's the case with most champs. This is another matchup that you win pretty hard. Fight her as she's trying to stack passive and she won't be able to do anything to you. If you dodge stun, you especially win the trade.
Jax
If you can build a lead in this lane, it'll be game over for Jax, unless you drag the game out until he's full build, then he'll never be able to catch up and you can kill at almost any point. Some Jax's will be aggressive and look to jump on you with E. If they do this, start spinning, W the stun, and run him down. Once his E is down he stands no chance against you.
Nocturne
Not a very strong pick into Garen. You are just too tanky and do too much damage for him to deal with. Once you have Berserker's, you'll kill him no problem. Just W his fear and fight him.
Rengar
If he jumps on you, Q him, then follow him with E. Don't stand in the bushes to fight him, as that's what he wants. Let him come to you, then chunk him down.
Riven
Same kind of thing as Irelia where unless they're a one trick you don't have much to fear here. Start your trade on her with E and then Q. W her stun and you'll be able to kill her pretty easily.
