Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Since Ezreal is entirely skill shot reliant, Vayne can easily Tumble, sidestep, or stand behind minions or your support to negate most of Ezreal's damage. Vayne's level 6 powerspike gives a huge advantage as her invisibility makes Ezreal's skillshots difficult to land.
Sivir
Since Sivir's laning phase is among the worst, and her range is extremely low compared to Vayne, Vayne can become a lane bully and easily outrade Sivir. Sivir can spell shield a Vayne's Condemn, but usually Condemn will not be the defining factor of living or dying. She simply cannot out trade a Vayne and is forced to farm.
Twitch
Twitch also has a naturally poor laning phase, and Vayne can outshine him early. Vayne's level 6 is usually stronger than a Twitch unless the Twitch has great coordination with a CC heavy support. As long as you get on top of Twitch, there is virtually nothing he can do except flash or fight. Although, late game Twitch is a powerhouse that can melt a Vayne. You should be able to 1v1 him at all stages of the game because you can go invisible if he ambushes you, but if he is protected heavily late game he is hard to deal with.
Kalista
Kalista has a potentially better early game than Vayne, but Vayne outshines Kalista at level 6. While Kalista is highly mobile, she isn't mobile enough to escape a Vayne with ult. While she is extremely squishy and vulnerable alone, she has great disengage with a support, so be weary engaging fights on her. You can outscale her easily mid-late game.
Corki
In the rare case where you will lane against a Corki bot lane, Vayne should play safer in the early levels. Corki is great at poking and bullying scaling ADCs like Vayne, so as long as you try to dodge Corki's Q you should be fine. He runs out of mana easily, and after level 6 there is virtually no way he can 1v1 you. Although, he can easily escape with his W and can quickly burst you while paired with his support. He falls off late game, where you excel so as long as he doesn't easily snowball the early lane you should be fine.
Kog'Maw
Vayne can crush Kog'Maw early on. She completely out-damages him until mid-late game, and he cannot possibly 1v1 her past level 6. He has an extremely poor laning phase, and is extremely immobile and vulnerable. However, he outranges Vayne with his W so short trades may not be in your favor. If he is alone, you can quickly and safely kill him. Late game he deals insane damage, but you SHOULD still be able to 1v1 him. Avoid fighting him when he is around tanks or CC support like Shen, Thresh, or Braum as he can quickly melt you.
Jhin
Before level 6, you should avoid all fights with Jhin. He is incredibly strong early game, with lots of harass and range at very little mana cost. Just farm up until level 6. His level 6 doesn't really help him in 1v1 or 2v2 from close range, whereas Vayne excels close range. From that point on, you should have little trouble fighting him alone, try to Tumble away from his snare. Getting snared or chunked from Jhin is extremely detrimental to Vayne, as she is extremely vulnerable while CCed or at low health. As long as you play safe Pre-6, you should be able to easily get on him and kill him at close range.
Jinx
While Jinx does have a poor early game, she can snowball extremely easily. She can outrange, harass, and consistenly poke Vayne so try to play safe and farm up in lane. Her traps are great for zoning Vayne, and trapping a Vayne almost ensures that the Vayne must flash or die. Jinx's fast-ranged and wide ultimate is hard for Vayne to Tumble from, unlike her W. But, Jinx is incredibly immobile and vulnerable if she misses her trap and Vayne gets close to her. Jinx is known for working extremely well with most supports, so if you are not comfortable with the support you have, or have little coordination, just avoid fighting 2v2 and wait for good 1v1 opportunities.
Xayah
Xayah also has a range advantage over Vayne. While Vayne can usually stay behind minions to avoid harass, Xayah can easily damage her through an entire wave. Xayah has a very strong level 6, especially with a support like Braum, Thresh, Rakan, etc. someone who can set up for her. 1v1s can be difficult because of her feathers being spread out everywhere, potentially snaring an engaging Vayne and invulnerability from her ultimate. She also scales insanely well late into the game, so I would generally avoid fighting her alone. If your team can successfully CC her down she is an easy clean up kill, but a difficult champion to engage onto.
Ashe
Ashe loves to harass any squishy opponent with her low mana cost W and great auto range and slowing auto attacks. She will constantly poke you down, forcing you to stay far back and attempt to farm. Her level 6 powerspike is very dangerous, and one stun will most likely kill you. Although, she suffers from really bad immobility and vulnerability if she misses her ultimate, and you can then easily get your autos off on her. It is just difficult as a Vayne to deal with her constant harass and slows, but she is possible to deal with.
Lucian
Lucian excels in the early lane, constantly engaging short trades and, most of the time, succeeding. He is very oppressive and will always be looking for windows to engage a Vayne, which is very easy for him. All you can do is condemn him away, but with his short cooldowns and high damage early on he is just a very difficult champion to lane against. After level 6 it gets slightly easier, and your invisibility helps greatly in 2v2 fights, but Lucian's overall mobility, burst damage, and oppressiveness in lane makes this a difficult matchup for Vayne.
Varus
Varus is a difficult lane for Vayne. He is a very good lane bully, constantly firing his Q and E to deal heavy damage to Vayne. His ult is devastating to you and most of the time ensures you dying. Vayne can easily dodge his Q with her Tumble, but most of the time Varus will win all trades and fights. But, Varus falls off hard into the late game making him a very vulnerable target to quickly burst with a few autos. If you ambush him it most likely forces his ult onto you, but his ultimate disengage, if it lands, can ensure you dying.
Tristana
Tristana outranges Vayne, so trades will be rough as Tristana can keep auto attacking you even after disengaging. Her heavy AoE damage from her E makes it difficult to Tumble away from, and her W is great for engaging onto a Vayne. Her W is also very annoying for Vayne as she can just jump away after an engage, making Vayne have almost no kill pressure in this lane. She can poke easily, burst easily, and engage/disengage easily. While Vayne can still kill her as she is vulnerable in close quarters, she can just press R on you and disengage that way.
Miss Fortune
Miss Fortune is just an incredibly annoying matchup for Vayne. Her constant low-mana Q harass, insanely damaging Love Tap autos, and zoning with her E make any trades extremely difficult for Vayne. Miss Fortune is a great early game laner and lane bully, which is Vayne's worst enemy. She simply deals insane damage that a vulnerable Vayne just can't sustain. Vayne's only advantage is that she can condemn a Miss Fortune out of her ult, and then followup if Miss Fortune gets stunned, but Miss Fortune's E slow is far too much for Vayne to fight within. If you see the enemy pick Miss Fortune, just don't pick Vayne- it'll make your lane much more difficult than it needs to be.
Kai'Sa
Kai'Sa performs nearly the same as Vayne. They both have a very poor early game, very strong level 6, great engage, and great 1v1/2v2 potential. Because of the burst damage and shield Kai'Sa has post level-6, she is probably stronger than Vayne. If you can condemn and stun her, then you should have little problem killing her, but an upgraded W hit into a Kai'Sa ult can almost ensure you losing the 1v1.
Caitlyn
Caitlyn is among the top 3 worst matchups for Vayne. She is just extremely difficult to deal with. She easily outranges Vayne, and can constantly harass with her long-range autos and headshots, and heavy damage Qs. She can zone Vayne with her traps, and if a Vayne gets caught in one, it basically guarantees death. Caitlyn can net a Vayne if you get too close, allowing her to headshot you, followed by a Q, auto, ult, etc. She basically counters you very well and you can do virtually nothing except stay back and farm. You can try to kill her if she misses her net and you can tell she has no more traps, but other than that, this matchup is just extremely hard for Vayne.
Quinn
Quinn is probably Vayne's second worst matchup. Quinn is known to be super strong in the early game, constantly bullying Vayne, outtrading her, and can easily kill a Vayne after level 3. Not only does she have lane pressure, but she has a ton of map pressure, where she can just steamroll the early game if you give her a kill or two. If she lands her blind on you, you can basically do nothing and are just forced to use your summoners or die. Farming is extremely difficult as she can consistently harass you, so just avoid this matchup if you can.
Draven
Draven is easily Vayne's worst matchup. He just deals insane amounts of damage starting at level 3. His level 6 is strong, his early game is strong, his late game is strong, everything he does is strong. He WILL always outrade you, and will win the majority of 2v2s. Once he snowballs there is virtually no stopping him. Just avoid this matchup at all costs.
Janna
Janna is an easy target for Vayne. Very squishy, all she can do is disengage on you. She's annoying to deal with but really not a threat.
Blitzcrank
Blitzcrank's whole purpose is to hook onto the carry, and Vayne's low cooldown Tumble can completely ruin that for him. As long as you dodge his Q there is virtually nothing he can do as you can just condemn him if he chases you.
Alistar
Similarly to Blitzcrank, his whole thing is locking onto the carry. Your condemn can simply pushing him away if he uses his W into Q combo. Vayne is a natural tank shredder as well with her percent health damage on Silver Bolts.
Lux
Although not typically a support, Lux is a very loose cannon support. Vayne can simply tumble out of her snare and Lux then can't do very much. She is very squishy, has no peel for her ADC, and can be easily punished for making mistakes.
Soraka
Extremely squishy, focus her in lane. She can't heal herself as good as she can heal others, so harass her in lane. Her silence and slow are both annoying to deal with but rarely the matter between life and death.
Sona
Sona is extremely squishy at all stages of the game. She is super easy to kill late game, and in lane all she can do is heal her ADC. If she tries to poke you with Q + Auto you can easily turn if your support follows. Her only advantage against you is the hard-to-dodge ultimate stun, but it is very possible to Tumble away to safety.
Morgana
Morgana is really good against hybrid ADCs or heavy CC adcs, and Vayne is neither of those. You can easily Tumble away from the binding, and the Black Shield will only block a condemn a small amount of times. She's squishy and it's hard for her to protect an ADC from an ulting Vayne.
Zilean
Zilean is sort of difficult to play as Vayne just because not only can he stun you, he can slow you by a ton, AND keep his ADC alive under any circumstance. He's annoying to deal with, and can poke you down a lot, so you may want to sit back and farm until you can get a pick or force him to use his ult. Without his ult, he is much less threatening.
Leona
Leona is great at engaging and disengaging. You can condemn her away with she tries to E you, or simply Tumble away. Tumble is also great for dodging her ultimate. But, if she locks onto you, she has far too much CC for you to survive. A Leona also needs coordination with her ADC to perform ideally, so she isn't the best in solo queue.
Zyra
Zyra honestly isn't a support- she's a mage. She deals ton and tons of damage, constantly. Because of Vayne's poor laning phase, Zyra can be very hard to deal with, but she is very squishy. If you dodge her snare with Tumble, you can easily focus onto her and she dies quickly. Just be weary of her high damage and high range and only go for engages in ideal situations.
Braum
Braum can be both easy and difficult for Vayne to deal with. He is excellent at protecting the ADC and allowing his ADC to lock onto a target. His passive can be devastating and he can block Vayne's autos, but he can't really do much to help his ADC besides that. He has no shields or heals, so if you can bait out his E shield, he can't do a whole lot to protect his ADC. His ult is pretty easy to Tumble away from, as is his Q.
Thresh
Thresh is like Blitzcrank but harder to deal with. He has more opportunities for playmaking than a simple Blitz hook, but Vayne can still dodge his hook and punish his mistakes. Thresh himself is actually quite squishy early on, so if he misses a hook or fails an engage, you can punish hard. His Q is very easy to sidestep or Tumble from, and if he walks up to Flay, you can just Condemn. But, he is amazing at setting up ganks and locking you down, so focus on dodging Thresh's engage and then following up, rather than engaging yourself.
Brand
Brand is very annoying simply because he does an extreme amount of poke. Paired with another bursty/poke ADC is recipe for disaster as Vayne. But, he is very squishy and easily punished. Missing a stun on Brand is huge, and you can then easily turn. Tumbling out of his W is quite difficult, so always buy boots as soon as possible to dodge his skill shots easier. If he stuns you, you will most likely die. But, if he misses, he can easily die.
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks can easily lock you down. His Fear can be really impactful. But he is very squishy, and if CCed, almost certainly dies. If you pair with a tankier/CC support, Fiddle really can't do much. But if you have a squishier support, Fiddle can bully both of you and make plays fairly easily.
Karma
Karma sort of does everything that you don't want a support to do. She can disengage, shield and buff her allies, and poke a lot. Focus on dodging her Q early game as it can quickly take your health away. Your only advantage is that you can Tumble out of her W snare's range (most of the time). Just focus on farming and dodging her Q. Give up cs if you must, because Karma has a very strong early game that can snowball hard.
Lulu
Lulu is extremely annoying for Vayne. She's like a worse form of Karma. She can shield her ADC incredibly, while poking you down. Her polymorph screws you so hard and it's point-and-click. Even staying behind minions won't help because she can just Q through the wave. Try to play as safe as possible and avoid fights/trades until at least level 6.
Tahm Kench
Tahm Kench basically makes the lane a farm-fest. He will constantly disengage any fights, save his allies, and peel for them. He is always super tanky and regens health quickly. You can punish his ADC easily while his Devour is down, but he still has great peel and will just stop you. Be careful of his Tongue Lash and Devour combo, though he should really never be close enough to auto you enough to use Devour.
Shen
Shen is very difficult for you to deal with. Her has great engage and lock on, and his taunt is deadly. His W also blocks all of your auto attacks if the champions are in the bubble, so he can screw you hard. He doesn't really have enough damage to consistently fight, but if a jungler or roamer is present, run far back. He can also ult squishy targets, making it more difficult for you to snowball kills.
Poppy
Hard to kill, has surprising amounts of damage, great lock-on, and completely screws your Q and your R + Q interaction. Just stay far back enough that she can't E you, and try to time your Condemn to push her back. Just don't engage fights because she will most likely beat you.
Taric
Taric is incredible at not only protecting his ADC, but allowing his ADC to lock on. You can Tumble his stun which helps a lot with his engages, but post level 6 he just screws you. If he manages to make at least 2 or 3 targets invulnerable, you are pretty much useless in teamfights and getting those resets on your Ultimate duration from kills is essential to keep your invisibility. In lane he's not too much of an issue with little kill pressure, but post level 6 he can do everything to stop you.
Vel'Koz
Annoying to deal with. Just focus on dodging his E and Q, he may beat you early on but he shouldn't be a problem late game.
Pyke
Pretty annoying for Vayne. He has great engage, mobility, and damage. If you can Tumble his stun and dodge his hook, you should be ok, but Pyke is still difficult to deal with always. Between his mobility, CC, and high damage, just play safe and he shouldn't be too much of an issue after the laning phase.
Rakan
Annoying. Post level 6 he is just dangerous. He has lots of CC and lock on. Try to Tumble from his knockup and you'll be much safer, but his ultimate is pretty difficult to deal with.
Nami
Lots of poke, lots of CC and slows, generally difficult to deal with. Avoid trading with her and stick to trades with the ADC because she will most likely outtrade you. She has lots of setup for her ADC and jungler, so if she makes advances just back off, even if you must give up CS.
- Hey everyone! I'm chrisloths, a Plat 3 ADC main, where I mainly play Vayne, Jinx, and Caitlyn. I have been playing Vayne for about 3 seasons, and think she is among the most fun champions to play. She has such a high skill ceiling and you can always improve your Vayne mechanics. She can outplay almost anyone, is a great choice against a tank-heavy team, and is an overall late game machine that can 1v5 Pentakill an entire team.
RUNES
RUNES
As far as runes go, Vayne is actually pretty flexible in what you can take:
- Fleet Footwork is the safest for Vayne, providing sustain and safety that she lacks in the laning phase. This is essential if you don't have a healing/shielding support. It also provides great engage, giving Vayne movement speed that can pair with items like Stormrazor and Blade of the Ruined King.
- Press the Attack is great for Vayne as it pairs perfectly with her Silver Bolts. It helps her deal even more damage, and is great with a CC/engage heavy support. Although not as safe as Fleet Footwork, it provides a great advantage for trading.
- As far as secondary runes go, Celerity and Gathering Storm are both safe and great for giving Vayne extra stats throughout the game. You can switch one of them for Nimbus Cloak if you want some extra Movement Speed, but my go-to is Celerity and Gathering Storm.
ITEMS
ITEMS
As far as Vayne's essential items go:
- Blade of the Ruined King: 40 Attack Damage, 25% Attack Speed, 12% Life Steal. Basic attacks deal 8% of target's current health as on-hit damage. ACTIVE: Deals 100 magic damage and steals 25% of the targets movement speed. - Really good on Vayne. Supplies her with on-hit damage, as her main damage source is Auto Attacks. Provides great Attack Speed, and lifesteal which is essential for Vayne's trades and fights. The active also gives great damage and pressure in the early levels.
- Guinsoo's Rageblade: 25 ability power, 25 attack damage, 25% attack speed. Basic attacks deal 5(+10% bonus AD) physical and 5 magic damage on-hit. Basic attacks also grant 8% attack speed, 2.5% bonus ad, and 2.5% bonus ap for 5 seconds, stacking up to 6 times. At 6 stacks, grants 48% attack speed, 15% bonus ad, 15% bonus ap, AND every 2nd auto triggers on hit effects. - Essential on Vayne. Expensive, and the AP is completely useless, but the fact that it triggers on hit effects every 2nd auto means Vayne can apply Silver Bolts every 2 autos instead of 3. Once you get maximum stacks you just shred everyone and everything.
- After those two items, Vayne can really build anything. You can go for more Lifesteal with Bloodthirster and Death's Dance, more defense with Maw of Malmortius and Guardian Angel, or crit/attack speed with Phantom Dancer and Rapidfire Cannon.
- As far as itemization on Vayne, you just want items that buff her auto attacks. As long as your autos deal the most damage, as fast as possible, you will do a ton of damage.
SPELLS
SPELLS
Passive: Night Hunter: Vayne ruthlessly hunts evil-doers, gaining 30 movement speed when moving toward nearby enemy champions. - Great for engaging and pairs well with ultimate.
Q: Tumble: Vayne tumbles, maneuvering to carefully place her next shot. Her next attack deals bonus damage. - Also great for engage. Adds a lot of damage, helps a lot with resetting autos, good for farming, and vital for ultimate use and survivability.
W: Silver Bolts: Vayne tips her bolts with a rare metal, toxic to evil things. The third consecutive attack or ability against the same target deals a percentage of the target's maximum Health as bonus true damage - This ability is what Vayne is known for. Auto three times and proc a big chunk of True Damage. Kill squishies fast and bust down tanks. Just make sure you are not constantly resetting by autoing different targets.
E: Condemn: Vayne draws a heavy crossbow from her back, and fires a huge bolt at her target, knocking them back and dealing damage. If they collide with terrain, they are impaled, dealing bonus damage and stunning them. - Not as impactful, but can certainly save you in a lot of situations. You can use it both to disengage and to stun targets, ensuring a kill and your safety.
R: Final Hour: Readying herself for an epic confrontation, Vayne gains increased Attack Damage, Invisibility during Tumble, and triple the bonus Movement Speed from Night Hunter. - Vayne's ultimate is great. It gives her a lot of bonus Attack Damage, triples the effect of Night Hunter (gives 90 Movement Speed while moving towards enemies), and grants invisibility to her Tumble. Constantly autoing and resetting Tumble will do insane amounts of damage and melt one target to the next. Remember that the duration of Final Hour is extended after an enemy champion dies within 3 seconds of being damaged by Vayne.
PROS AND CONS
PROS AND CONS
Pros:
- Great against a team with more than one tank. - Great engage. - Amazing 1v1 potential. - Hard to deal with while ulting (constantly moving around and invisible). - Great at farming. You can use Silver Bolts and your Tumble to help out a ton. - Goes well with almost any support. - Late game monster. - Extremely fun to play. - Once mastered, you can pull off insane plays and win or turn games single-handedly. - Clean auto attack animation. - Edgy voice lines.
Cons:
- Pretty poor laning phase. - Pretty weak before 2 items. - Very squishy. - Huge skill ceiling ( meaning it may be easy to learn her, but takes a while to truly master her. You can always improve mechanics ). - Very expensive build path, usually will not complete until 35+ minutes. - Not great into poke lanes, bursty supports, or early game ADCs. - She has a bad reputation for having toxic players. Always stay cool even in harsh situations because Vayne is one of the best champions for outplaying and turning the game.
SUMMARY
SUMMARY
All-in-all, Vayne is an extremely fun-to-play champion with a huge skill ceiling. If you have the time to learn and master her, I'd say go for it. She's very rewarding and helps a lot with mechanics you can use for not only other ADCs, but most other roles as well. For maybe the first season I played Vayne I had poor mechanics, little knowledge of the champion, but still had lots of fun playing her. Don't pick her up and go right into ranked, play her a lot in normals, get your mastery up, and once you feel confident enough, go for it in ranked. If you really want to play Vayne and you already see the enemy has locked in an unfavorable matchup, don't be alarmed. Vayne can be played in almost every matchup, except for super high damage and early game matchups, like Draven/Brand or Quinn/Karma. Even these champions can easily be outplay and you can still come out on top with enough practice and mastery of Vayne. Hopefully this helps you guys, good luck, and enjoy playing my personal favorite champion, Vayne!
