Not Updated For Current Season

Alistar is able to deny all-ins from Shen with his Headbutt, however Shen's ability to block Alistar's Trample-empowered basic attack with Spirit's Refuge coupled with his Taunt also makes this lane a relatively power-neutral match-up. Shen has a slight edge since Alistar's Headbutt does not stop his target from being taunted for 1.5 seconds and, if anything, it gives Shen a free escape.
Bard
Bard has strong poke in lane and the ability to match roams quickly with his Magical Journey. This lane can go in Shen's favor with aggressive abuse of ability spikes, since Bard offers very little peel for his Carry and gains very little combat effectiveness from his abilities besides Cosmic Binding. Bard also deals a lot of damage through his passive on basic attacks which can be mitigated with Spirit's Refuge.
Blitzcrank
Shen is not particularly in danger when blitzcrank lands a hook onto him as it often will pull him into range to Taunt the enemy Carry. Shen will struggle to peel for his own Carry should they get hooked however.
Brand
Brand is notorious for being a lane bully, particularly into melee Supports. Priority in this match-up should be placed on sustain and damage minimization.
Braum
While Braum makes it difficult to all-in during laning phase, Shen's ability to counter his passive stacking on basic attacks with Spirit's Refuge and his superior roaming makes this generally a power-neutral match-up.
Fiddlesticks
Fiddlesticks has strong poke in lane and the ability to stop your all-ins using his Fear. Despite this, Shen is able to win this match-up with Taunt+Flash combos that can be difficult to stop and early trades onto what is a relatively squishy Support.
Janna
While Janna is very effective at peeling her Carry, she remains a very squishy champion and offers very little in terms of roaming. Abuse ability spikes to win this match-up early, or gain advantages through Shen's superior ability to impact other lanes in the mid-game.
Karma
While Karma offers relatively strong poke and shielding, her peel is quite weak against Shen's all-ins. Keep track of when she chooses to use her Mantra to win trades in lane.
Leona
This is quite a comfortable lane for Shen since Leona can struggle to peel for her carry and freely be engaged upon herself. Spirit's Refuge allows Shen and his allies to dodge her Shield of Daybreak-empowered basic attacks to avoid the stun.
Lulu
Lulu's poke in lane should not be underestimated and her power to deny all-ins using the polymorph from Whimsy and health increase from Wild Growth at level 6 and onwards makes it important to try to roam and impact other lanes in this match-up.
Lux
Shen can deny Lux's empowered basic attacks from her passive using Spirit's Refuge, but her strong poke can sometimes be difficult to deal with. That said, Lux's peel is relatively weak and she is squishy enough to be susceptible to Shen's strong all-ins.
Morgana
Morgana has strong lane push and poke which is very difficult to deal with as Shen. Her Black Shield makes all-ins very hard to pull off and her ability to lock down champions using Dark Binding and Soul Shackles will often put Shen and his Carry on the back foot. Focus on impacting other lanes in this match-up.
Nami
Nami's poke is very expensive and often requires her to get quite close to see any real benefit. She is incredibly squishy and struggles to peel from an all-in. Spirit's Refuge can be used to mitigate her empowered basic attacks granted by Tidecaller's Blessing. Nami also struggles to match Shen's roams so this is a relatively good match-up for him.
Pyke
While Pyke has strong roaming, his peel and ability to fight all-ins that aren't on his terms makes this a strong match-up for Shen. Pulling Shen towards his Carry with Bone Skewer often makes it easier for Shen to land a taunt.
Rakan
While Rakan struggles to peel his Carry, his all-in is strong. He has multiple escapes so focus should always be on the Carry unless Shen is strongly ahead.
Sona
Sona has very little peel for her Carry and is incredibly squishy so this lane provides many opportunities for all-ins. Spirit's Refuge can be used to counter Sona's empowered basic attacks. Pay attention to when Sona uses her only form of crowd control with Crescendo as it grants a large window in which to look for taunts.
Soraka
Soraka is very squishy and immobile so focus all-ins onto her in lane. She can match ultimates with Shen to some extent but generally speaking having an extra member in a fight is more valuable than the healing she offers with Wish.
Hi everyone, my name is Tom and I am a support main playing on EUW. Shen support has seen a rise in popularity this season in professional play but remains a rare support in solo/duo queue. I am writing this guide after seeing a lack of quality and reliable guides out there for Shen support.
What does Shen offer in the support role?
What does Shen offer in the support role?
Shen is commonly picked in professional play for his ability to play in the side lanes and contribute to plays being made across the map, without the need for teleport, using his ultimate. This is more powerful in a communicative environment with lots of team coordination which is why it sees less play in solo/duo queue. That said, Shen's kit also makes him an effective laner into many match-ups and his ability to make plays with his ultimate definitely increases as you begin to play with more skilled players.
