Introduction
There are two approaches to early game.
This first strategy is a bit riskier. You should use this strategy against squishier/low mobility opponents. In early game, play aggressively. Your abilities still do decent damage without AP items, so hammer away early game. Your goal is to get as much farm as possible. The sooner you get your full build, the sooner you can become Legendary.
The second strategy is less risky, but you can still get profit from it. Play passively, and get as many last hits as possible. Sneak in poke with your Q when you are sure it can hit. Without mana regen items, you will run out of mana fast if you spam your abilities.
Mid game is probably the roughest part for Vel'Koz. Your AP abilities have lost their shine, but you don't have the critical chance or attack speed to make it up yet. Try to get as much gold as possible. Try ganking other lanes to pick up a few kills. Your full combo still packs a punch.
Late game, try to catch enemies alone. You can explode them. In a team fight, try to lay down your abilities in the W E Q R order. Your Life Form Disintegration Beam usually scares the enemy away. After the combo, you can lay down your basic attacks. If your ult isn't up, just do W E Q and then basic attack. Try to go for the squishies if possible. If you can't, you still deal a decent amount of damage to their tankier champions.
