The only Volibear Toplane guide You'll ever Need

By Singed1vs9
Introduction:
Hello guys.

I really like Volibear pre and post Rework.

I'll try my best to teach You the best way to play him after the rework since he's strenghts completly shifted.
Volibear Abilities:
The Relentless Storm:

INNATE: Volibear gains 1 stack of The Relentless Storm whenever he damages an enemy with Basic Attack basic attacks on-hit and abilities, up to a maximum of 5. The Relentless Storm lasts for 6 seconds, refreshing whenever Volibear gains a stack. At maximum stacks, he gains Lightning Claws.

THE RELENTLESS STORM: Volibear gains 5% bonus attack speed per stack, up to 25% bonus attack speed.

LIGHTNING CLAWS: Volibear's claws ignite with lightning, causing his basic attacks on-hit to deal 11 − 60 (based on level) (+ 40% AP) bonus magic damage to the target and the closest visible enemy within 450 units of the target, chaining up to 4 subsequent targets.

Q - Thundering Smash:

ACTIVE: Volibear drops on all fours, becoming ghosted and gaining Movement speed for 4 seconds, doubled when moving towards visible enemy champions.

While active, Volibear's next basic attack within the duration pounces on the target, deals bonus physical damage, and Stun the target for 1 second.

If Volibear becomes immobilized while Thundering Smash is active, the effect ends prematurely and the cooldown is reset.

Thundering Smash resets Volibear's basic attack timer, benefits from Life steal and is affected by Critical strike modifiers.

W - Frenzied Maul:

ACTIVE: Volibear strikes the target enemy, dealing physical damage, applying on-hit and on-attack effects, and Wounding them for 8 seconds.

If Frenzied Maul targets a Wounded enemy, Volibear bites the target, dealing 50% increased damage and healing himself. The heal is halved against Minions.

Frenzied Maul also benefits from Life steal.

E - Sky Splitter:

ACTIVE: Volibear summons a lightning bolt to strike at the target location after a 2-second delay. Enemies can see the cast location indicator after a 1-second delay. If Volibear is within the lightning strike, he shields himself for 15% of his maximum health (+ 80% AP) for 3 seconds.

The lightning bolt deals magic damage to all enemies struck, capped against non-champions, slowing them by 40% for 2 seconds, and grants sight of the area for 1 second.

R - Stormbringer:

ACTIVE: Volibear gains Stormbringer for 12 seconds and Dash leaps to the target location with immunity to crowd control as well as granting sight of the area in a 500 radius during it. If Thundering Smash is active when Stormbringer is cast, its duration is refreshed.

STORMBRINGER: Volibear becomes ghosted and gains Health, 50 bonus attack range, 25 increased range on Frenzied Maul, and 25% increased size.

Volibear impacts after a 1 second delay, slowing all enemies in an area by 50%, decaying over 1 second. Enemies in the epicenter are also dealt physical damage.

Volibear also disables enemy turrets (including Playful untargetable ones, excluding Nexus Obelisk Nexus Obelisk) in an area for a few seconds, dealing them the same physical damage.
Runes:
Primary Tree - Precision:

Press the attack:

Most of the players like to play with Conqueror. In my opinion Conqueror is overrated.
Since early game you are not that strong compared to old Volibear, you need to do quick burst trades.
With PTA you can charge them with Q, casting your E, stun them into auto and reset the auto with your W.
This combo proc PTA for a super strong quick burst trade. Ofc mid-late game conqueror is better but PTA makes your ****ty early game actually really good.
Conqueror:

Just take it in pretty passive lanes that allows you to freely scale. Otherwise just go PTA.
Triumph:

The best option in this section. Just take it.
Legend: Tenacity:

It's the best rune in this section since it gives you free tenacity.
Even in low amount of cc just take it so you become unstoppable.

Last Stand:

The best Rune in this section. Coup de Grace is super nerfed and Cut Down is pretty useless on volibear since you get a lot of HP.

Secondary Tree - Resolve:
Bone Plating:

It really helps into all ins from the enemy toplaner.
Whenever it's up is really hard for the enemy toplaner to burst you.
Second Wind:

Take it into Ranged Toplaners to sustain yourself from poke.
Overgrowth:

Really good rune that synergize with your HP stacking build.
It makes you even tankier while also increasing your W - Frenzied Maul damage.
It also synergize really well with your ultimate giving you even more HP.

Primary Tree - Resolve:

Aftershock:

Take aftershock into hard matchups such as Darius .
It also scales really well into the lategame making you even tankier.
Demolish:

Demolish is really really good on Volibear. The damage to towers from Volibear basic attacks is just nothing. Demolish however makes your tower taking potential super good.
Do not take Shield Bash it might sound good on paper but the damage and the bonus resistances is just not valueable compared to demolish.
If it get's buffed might consider get it.
Conditioning:

Since you have aftershock you don't have to be worried about getting oneshotted.
Since you have to scale and farm safely Conditioning is the best choice in this section.

Unflinching:

Overgrowth as i said before is really good on Volibear.
But since you do not take the tenacity from the Precision tree getting Unflinching is the best option here.

Secondary Tree - Inspiration:

Biscuit Delivery:

Since you have to survive the early game biscuits is the best option in this tree.
Use them when you are low on health to make the best use out of them.
If somehow you don't use them you can sell them for extra gold (the max Mana is added even if you sell them).

Cosmic Insight:

New Volibear heavily relay on CDR. This rune is one of the best.
It gives you 5% cdr to pretty much everything.
Summoner Spells:
Flash:

Always take Flash no matter what.
Don't grief :)

Teleport:

Never take ignite Toplane as Volibear. Your early game is really bad and one kill sometimes doesn't make a huge difference. You need to scale and also helping your teammates.
The only rune that can be usefull over Teleport is Ghost for kiting or chasing.
TP plays can make the differece between winning or losing a game.
If the enemy toplaner do not take TP ask ur jungler to abuse him since one death means he is out of the game for a while.
Itemization:
New Volibear heavily relay on CDR. So your build path is quite tricky:

Forbidden Idol:

Super underrated item. It gives you shield and heal power and most importantly 10% CDR and a bit of mana regen on top of all that.
It builds into one of my favorite item Shurelya's Reverie a cheaper version of Righteous Glory but gives Movement Speed to all your allies.

Kindlegem:

All Volibear needs. HP and CDR for 800 gold.
It also builds in Spirit Visage .

Glacial Shroud:

Armor, Mana and CDR.
Prioritize Forbidden Idol and KindleGem over this item.

Sheen:

Last item for CDR is Sheen .
After buying this item Volibear reach 40% CDR a huge powerspike.

Shurelya's Reverie:

Super good item. All volibear really needs in one item.
HP, Mana regen, HP regen,Shield and Heal Power and an amazing Active.
After 40% CDR you can decide to complete Shurelya's Reverie or Iceborn Gauntlet and then finish Shurelya's Reverie.

Iceborn Gauntlet:

Good Chunk of armor and an AoE slow to chase even better.
Since you buy both Sheen and Glacial Shroud finishing this item only costs 750 gold.
Some people think Trinity force is better. In my opinion is way too expensive and also Volibear Base attack Damage is not very high and that means the Triforce proc does very little Damage compared to a normal Bruiser making it not very efficient.
Spirit Visage:

Third item will be Spitit Visage. HP, MR and a massive 30% increased healing added on top of Shurelya's Reverie 10%.

Sterak's Gage:

After your Spirit Visage the other items are situational.
I personally like Sterak's Gage for the raw HP stats and the massive %HP shield.
After your ultimate the Passive, Giant Strenght, gives you a massive Shield while also grants you a big amount of tenacity.
Consider that Volibear AD ratios are not that bad making this item super powerful.

Liandry's Torment:

I know that might sound strange. An Ap item on Volibear, what a troll.
But you have to consider that Volibear has super good AP ratios compared to Pre-reworked Volibear.
Liandry's Torment gives you HP,%HP damage, increased by the slow of Iceborn Gauntlet , your Q - Thundering Smash or your E - Sky Splitter and 10% increased damage from all your sources.
Making it one of the best if not the best item on Volibear (and probably in the game)

Mercury's Treads:

Take boots whenever you want even first item if you really need them.
I take Mercury's Treads 80% of my games prioritizing Tenacity over Basic attack reduction from Ninja Tabi .
If the enemies have really low amount of CC then you can buy them and sit on Legend: Tenacity or Unflinching .
Early Game:
As i said earlier Volibear early game is not that good compared to pre-rework Volibear.

However his lategame is way better so you have to manage your early game in other to guarantee yourself a good mid to late game.

First of all choose the best runes for the matchup.

PTA:

Since early game you are not that strong compared to old Volibear, you need to do quick burst trades making the most out from your shield from your E - Sky Splitter .

With PTA you can charge them with Q, casting your E, stun them into auto and reset the auto with your W.

This combo proc PTA for a super strong quick burst trade. Ofc mid-late game conqueror is better but PTA makes your ****ty early game actually really good.

And if they want to keep fighting you after your quick burst trade, you have the advantage to do 12% increased damage off your PTA proc.

Aftershock:

Farm safely as much as you can while maintaining a good wave management.

Do not let enemies freeze under their tower and if they do ask your jungler to help you fix the wave in order to keep farming and scaling.

Since you get Teleport you need to use it for helping your team. First TP for your lane, afterwords you always wanna look for Tp plays.

Wasting your TP for one minion wave is really not worth for either you and your teammates.
Mid Game:
In the Mid-Game you should have your 40% CDR if you manage to farm well and not die.

Now you have to start looking for roams and dives with your ultimate.

New Volibear R - Stormbringer disables Towers up to 6 seconds at level 16.

With 40% your ultimate is permanently up that's why looking for dives is the most effective and the best way to get an advantage in other lanes.

Start looking for drakes or Rift Herald with your team.

Remember making your teammates ahead can mean the difference between winning and losing.
Late Game:
You are now a massive tank while also dealing a **** ton of damage.

Look for plays when you have your flash up, otherwise look for peeling for your backline. (PTA damage also increase ally damage)

Remember that your splitpush is actually really strong so whenever you have your TP up look for it.

Remember new Volibear, for now, It's not a super hard carry champion.
You have to help your teammates in order to let you and them scale.

GL and enjoy new Volibear :)
