Some time ago there was a "bug" in Malzahars Q.
If the enemy was |---x-O-x---| there, he recieved double damage. But that was really hard to pull of. Regardless of how rarely it happened, I think Riot removed it some patches ago.

So, I finnaly managed to run a couple of tests. From what i tried, it obviosly seemed that the spell does NORMAL dmg no matter where the target is, minions and champions alike. Also, the part about the Banshee's Veil is not true, too.

Well it is, but it is all one spell.
also if you look in that guide, there is a vid showing the Banshee's Veil Q bug, it is gone now I am pretty sure (this was one year ago)
