Generally:
Top: Tanky melee AD, sometimes AP
Mid: AP
Bot: AD carry and support
And a jungler, which is almost always tanky melee AD.

I dont want to be a bad *** right now, but i guess you should understand a bit more every champ, where they belong, what they do in lane / team fight, before starting ranked
English is not my native langage, I'm sorry about how painful to read my text are :c

Im going to have a little bit of a different opinion from Jhoijhoi (sorry) about the best characters to fulfill each roll. Among these characters the "BEST" is all dependent on the player.
Top:
Lee Sin
Gang Plank
Mordekaiser
Olaf
Nidalee
Sion
Rumble
Mid:
Morgana
Brand
Kassadin
Cassiopia
AP Sion (anti mid)
Katarina (anti mid)
Caitlyn
Vladimir
Leblanc
Jungle:
Maokai
Lee Sin
Noctourne
Udyr
Olaf
Skarner
Warwick
AD Carry Bot:
Graves
Vayne
Corki
Ezreal (hate laning against ez)
Caitlyn
Support Bot:
Alistar
Taric
Sona
Soraka
Maokai (zoning master, don't laugh till u try it)
Zilean
Following the meta top is traditionally survivable above all else, while dealing decent to awesome damage. Mid is traditionally ap, and bot is ad carry and a support/tank or support/heal. And, sorry pal, but im going to have to agree with everyone else and say that you need a bit more understanding of each character before Ranked becomes your option of choice :(

well im ok, im 1100 elo, but i guess im trying to find stuff to read to help integrate me into ranked better so that im not a jerk for playing and not knowing what i think is refered to as the "metagame". if anyone knows of a good guide for making the transition to ranked let me know. thank u guys for ur help so far, it defenitly helps.

Well i will say this much... At least you are doing your research. That puts you ahead of at least half of the jerk-offs that play this game. Don't worry, we were all scrubs at some point, and ******s will still call u a nub in game even if your elo was at 2,000 just because they arent doing well and they want to blame anybody but themselves. Keep at it, keep doing research, look up at least 3 different guides for a single character before you decide what you want to do. Eventually you will be able to scrap guides alltogether and react solely on the situation at hand. Many people on this site, such as Luiginof, Jhoijhoi,Luther3000, and (i guess) Dufftime, will be more than happy to help you out. They offer good advice (most of the time when they aren't trolling) and it would be wise to listen. Just hanging out with the people already IN ranked or reading what they post online will do you WORLDS of good. And im pretty sure there are several guides like "Escaping ELO Hell" that kind of give you an idea on how to transition, you just have to select the proper guide type from the pull down menu in the guide search screen.
On a personal note, the biggest thing that i can say makes the difference between a good character and a bad character in lane is the familiarity the player has with him. Knowing his exact ranges, how much punishment he can take at any point in a build before its time to scoot, AND general play skills, all make a world of difference. Getting a buddy to go into a custom game with you and have you try to farm and dodge while he tries to skillshot you to death as Urgot, Ez, or Ziggs is WONDERFUL experience. Or picking a character like Gragas and going around the map in custom and learning which walls you can belly bump through and committing that to memory also break that good-to-awesome player barrier. All in all, the "most OP" characters in a lane only mean so much. I could go out and buy ez right now, but if i try to run a ranked match with him, i would get my entire team obliterated. (only reason i dont own him is because i hate him so much... but eventually i'll have to get him simply because of that hate). Play the characters you like and are good with, and odds are there will be a spot for him to fill in a Ranked game.
