Hello and welcome to the MOBAFire Patch Summary - 8.19!

This is the Worlds patch which will determine the face of the competitive scene throughout this year's international Worlds event. There are a lot of buffs in this patch to champions like Elise and Jarvan IV that have seen a lot of competitive play historically.

Patch 8.19 also includes some audio-visual, client and gameplay improvements, as well as a test of the upcoming positional rank system. Keep reading to learn more about those features!

Check out the full patch notes for details on any changes that interest you, and be sure to check out Riot's video summary below!

Champion Changes
Buffed

Adjusted

Audio-Visual Updates

Item Changes

Ability Power: 80 ⇒ 75
Damage Over Time: 1% Max HP per second ⇒ 1.5% Max HP per second
Damage Over Time Vs Impaired Targets: 2% Max HP per second ⇒ 2.5% Max HP per second

Other Changes

  • Gameplay Clarity
    • The default visual effect for movement speed slow effects has been updated!

    • Baron Nashor, Rift Herald, and Dragon steals are now celebrated (or "celebrated", depending on which side of the steal you were on) via chat call-outs and announcement banners!

  • Client Updates
    • In preparation for the 2019 ranked changes and the return of Clash, the profile page design has been revamped. A couple of the profile icons will remain empty for a while, but that should change soon.

    • Also in preparation for Ranked 2019, Riot is now previewing positional matchmaking in Normal Draft only. This means you’ll be matched based on the position you were assigned instead of just having one rating in the background. This should make matchmaking better across the board, and tangibly better when playing secondary and autofilled games. They’re also testing position detection, which determines what position you actually played on the end of game screen.

  • Bugfixes
    • Dark Harvest’s dropped Soul Essence particle is now brighter and clearer for colorblind players.

    • Allies Tahm Kench has devoured will no longer sometimes be targetable when first swallowed.

    • Willump's transition to walking after he finishes rolling his snowball will now feel smoother.

    • Tiamat's passive will now consistently work when hitting a target with Martial Cadence.

    • Lunge will once again correctly prioritize champions and vital procs over killable minions.

So let me get this straight, they're buffing Pyke, Thresh and Janna which are already top tier supports for no reason, but no Karma buff? Karma got her E destroyed a while ago with no compensation...so they're just gonna forget about her completely?

Huge liandry buff? Riot, when you buff an item, you need to look at who buys it, because you're buffing them. Riot just buffed support Brand and Zyra, Singed, and Rumble. I get that they wanted to buff Mordekaiser, Amumu and Teemo, but there's no excuse for buffing the former.

There's one thing I like about the patch and it's AP Nunu & Willump buffs, AP tank Nunu is really good. I'm pretty worried about the rest...OP supports are not fun.

Thresh has been pretty underwhelming for a while now IMO, I don't know about Pyke though. As for Janna, her buffs have nothing to do with her upcoming skin at all!

Ugh, more Fiora buffs. % max health true damage is my least favorite stat in the game and I'm always happy when champions that have it like Vayne and Fiora are in the gutter.

Rito why you make a stat that is impossible to itemize against?

Jarvan IV needed a little love, but just a little.

Elise need a little love, but I think they went overboard. They could have just upped her attack speed and she would be a lot better. She still suffers from the problem of needing level 3 to easily kill scuttle crabs.

Kha'Zix already strong enough in the hands of people that could pilot him. His isolated damage is really difficult to deal with for most champions.

Darius eh, feel like he was in a pretty good spot. Difficult to deal with if he got ahead and if your team didn't have good peel. Not a completely liability if somewhat behind since he can get resets in team fights.

Nunu & Willump seems to work well in higher ELOs where people will take advantage of the advantages that Nunu could give them, coming in fast for ganks and with a lot of CC. Still not a solo carry that is going to 1v9 the enemy team and I don't think the AP ratio updates change that.

Pyke - WTF. I couldn't keep that champion pinned down when I was actually trying to with a Maokai. He literally makes some team fights impossible to take due to the execute damage on his ult and good luck getting your solooqueue team to understand when that is.

Kog'Maw - I'm beginning to despise champions that build on-hit. If Kog is ahead he can vaporize you and probably any dive buddy that chooses to go after him if you can't pin him down and burst him quickly.

Janna - Oh you thought you were going to make a play? Not today. Not a champion I like to see META. I've flipping been poked out of lane vs a Janna as a Brand before the Summon Aery nerfs. If she is going to be the queen of disengage, she should not also be able to poke you out of lane.

Thresh torn on this one. A good Thresh can flat out take over a game. Bad ones (most) are kind of non-entities. Feel like he gets just that more terrifying in good hands and becomes at least annoying in the hands of bad ones.

Really feel like they are trying to prop up champions that they think would be exciting to see at Worlds. I'm not disputing the need to keep things interesting, but when a champion is already in a good spot, ugh.

One champion I'm surprised they don't look at a little is Warwick. I think thematically he is one of their best champions post re-work and he is a great skirmisher which potentially makes moments of excitement outside of team fights. I think they hit his early game a touch too hard given how hard he falls off late game and they really need to address the buggy mess that is Blood Hunt. Honestly if they fixed Blood Hunt they probably wouldn't need to buff him in any other way.

Graves is another champion they need to look at. Toning down the slow on Smoke Screen would be good. I also think his ult needs to be looked at. If he is meant to be a short ranged brawler, why can he snipe low health targets with his ult? I can think of several time that I've found my way into games after not doing much else than farming by walking in and blowing away some low health target. Kill secured.
