BLAARGH!

Uh.. Cool story and what not, but I think you missed something.
I'm not in fact.. you know... using Japanese..
This may come as a surprise to you, but I've actually been writing in English here.

Anime is a word that has been adapted by the English language; it is often pertaining to Japanese animation, not the literal meaning of the Japanese word, which is "animation", I believe.

Since it has been adapted into the English language, general English grammar law could be applied to it.
Just take a look at the French/Latin words in English.
"Camera" is an English word taken from Latin that has a plural form of "cameras".
That said, I cannot make a definitive statement on which form is right or wrong, but neither can you, seeing as it's not an actual Japanese word. So let's not get our panties in a twist over something that isn't even officially defined yet..

It's also in essence what OTG said, less eloquently so.

However, because I don't want him to actually drill you through the ground while having the hardest comeback on you (so hard you'll think twice about correcting someone again) for this sentence: "There IS lots of sushi", I'd suggest you correct it asap. (It goes without saying of course, but just to make sure you get it : "There ARE a lot of sushi").

He makes many mistakes, but I'm not certain that you're correct here.
"There are a lot of sushi" just sounds wrong to me, so I'm thinking it might be a case of using "is" for both singular and plural, like with the word "you", which uses "are" for both singular and plural.
Grammar can be pretty stupid at times ^_^

I think It depends on how one percieves the word "Sushi" in the sentence. For example, the word "Sushi" could stand for "an assortment of japanese seafood combined with cooked rice" in general , which is a singular word. On the other hand, "Sushi" can also mean one "piece" of that sushi box, therefore be considered plural depending on the contest. (For example, if there's a plate far from you full of temaki and makizushi on the dinner table, you would say: "Could you pass me a couple of sushi?" Which is plural. (I suppose)).

However, I do agree that "There are a lot of sushi" sounds wrong. I just don't know if it's gramatically correct or not.

I suppose I owe Cuddowls an apology. My bad, I'm sorry :)

Someone agreed with ME? in an OFF-TOPIC Thread? Writing the date down, victory is mine on this day.

And yea, I kinda purposely made that sentence you were referring to as 'murican as possible.

WHILE I'M ACTUALLY IN THIS THREAD, I don't really watch much anime, but I'd like to get into some new ones. I've only watched Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Zoids and Claymore on my own merit so far... Looking to expand. Any suggestions?

It has some nice elements, but the fights have been really pathetic lately. They've literally been using the same pattern of fighting (i.e: everybody gets hurt, Mr.Bloodgod comes and saves the day) for like 4 arcs now. I'm contemplating dropping it.

The Breaker is one of my favorite manga series(yes, manga=manhwa). Not amazing or so, but really good and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I've been mostly disappointed by The Breaker: New Waves so far though.

Me neither, but that just means you're only watching anime adaptations. And as SHOULD be common knowledge by now; Anime adaptations are terrible 90% of the time.
If you wanna watch anime you should stay away from any anime that has been adapted from manga (read the manga instead). Just watch original content, animes that are created from scratch. There are definitely a few good ones.

Nichijou is a safe bet if you like comedy and Cowboy Bebop is pretty good even if slightly dated by now.
I'm not too big on anime, but I read a lot of manga and have a few I'd recommend to anybody that can stomach the mature themes.
My 2 favorite mangas are Berserk and Shingeki No Kyojin. Full Metal Alchemist is also most definitely worth checking out too(it's a runner up for me).

Uh, grats.

Nichijou is a safe bet if you like comedy. It has some truly brilliant humor and is nicely animated.

If you liked FMA Brotherhood and Claymore you should check out Shingeki No Kyojin and Berserk (in MANGA form, the Berserk anime sucks and the SNK anime airs its first episode in 2 days; here's a trailer for it). They're kinda similar in overall style and they're both amazing.
Vagabond is also really good, but I don't rate it as highly as the 2 above.

I'll make it easy for anybody that wants to read them:

Download link for most Berserk chapters.(download for best quality)
Online reader for Berserk.
Online reader for Shingeki no Kyojin.

Rave Master doesn't suck. Bleach doesn't suck and it's actually been getting better recently. Big 3 is doing okay. Naruto is getting more interesting as well and I forgot to mention One Piece as well so thanks for reminding me.

Oh, lol. It seems I was right in thinking you were a lost cause.
All the hints were there; you reading Rave Master, having a To-Love-Ru avatar and sig(I think. I only read ~3 chapters; it was awful), writing down every single manga/anime you've ever watched.
This may come as a surprise to you: Tite Kubo (the author of Bleach) wanted to end bleach like 100chapters back, but he was talked into continuing it. And now the story is ****ed up beyond repair, which I'm sure you didn't even notice.

Let's be honest, though. If you're watching/reading Bleach, or any similar anime/manga, for the plot, you're doing it wrong. You're in it for the fight scenes, not anything else.

On the subject of typical shonen, I'm really starting to appreciate Hunter x Hunter, which I'm watching the anime of. Its ********-magic-stuff that powers everyone's powers is incredibly internally consistent, people use their ********-magic-stuff powers in really cool ways, and its dealt with a couple of typical shonen tropes in very amusing ways (there was/is a bad guy who puts bombs on people; he arms the bombs by explaining how his power works). It's still not fantastic and still not worth watching for the plot, but it has managed to be consistently enjoyable for over 70 episodes so far, where other shonen I've watched have petered out much more quickly (even if I continued to watch them).

I also started Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth on Hulu. So far it's cute but nothing special. Except that episode two is called "Cheese", which just makes me laugh. Cheese. Heh.

There's a lot of anime on Hulu (browse the genre). Free streaming is a great way to just test stuff out. I'd suggest looking at the sci-fi stuff--it's the most likely to have robots--or action/adventure--it's less likely to be about feelings. You'd probably enjoy Trigun.

I actually have seen some of Trigun and loved it.

I'm a bit biased towards anime in general (Because my friends are the types that are overly obsessed about it) and thus "popular" animes like Naruto and Bleach annoy me to no end. Been looking for more obscure animes to watch that no one can ruin for me. -.-

trigun is solid.

I also am biased but yeah popular anime like naruto and bleach annoy me also because of what was touched on earlier...if it has more than say 40 episodes it is typically not that good...and a lot of the episodes are filler episodes or episodes that just catch you up to speed if you missed the last 10. aka naruto...bleach...DBZ....inuyasha

You say this but never say if latin words have a plural form or not. Your argument is a fallacy.

So "animes" and "sushis" and "ramens" sound right to you?

Sushi is kinda' a plural word by nature. You can have more sushi, but having a sushi isn't right--you have a piece of sushi. I don't know what rules there are for words like this, but since this is English, it's not like the rules would matter anyway. Yay language!

Animes? Sure, if you want. Sushis? I mean, it'd just show that you don't talk about sushi much. Ramens? Doesn't sound wrong, necessarily. It depends on how you use it. Feels like a plural for multiple types of ramen, the way "peoples" and "fishes" work. (Insofar as how a word "feels" actually has anything to do with what's right.)
