Introduction

Hi I'm Death Leash a Platinum Master Yi main with 300+ yi matches played in season 8. This guide is for people that want to improve their jungling and playstyle as Master Yi to be able to carry their own matches.
Let's get started

Pros / Cons

Pros: Cons:
  • Squishy
  • Weak to CC
  • Decent Early Game potential if you can stack Conqueror before fighting
  • Weak Early Game overall as you are not bringing any form of CC into your ganks

Runes

There are 3 viable rune paths for this build:
The first build path is using the Domination tree:
The second build path is using the Sorcery tree:
The third build path is using the Inspiration tree which gives you 18% attack speed bonus compared to Domination and Sorcery which are giving you 9% attack speed and 6 AD:
In the end I can say Domination Tree is for people that want to stack up during the game in order to carry the game by having higher base AD stats and some more sustain. Sorcery Tree enables plays earlier in the game as you'll have a higher base movement speed and a nice burst from Nimbus Cloak that may help your ganks. Inspiration Tree is a safe option that helps you clearing camps slightly faster in the early game and gives you a free pair of Magical Footwear and some extra cdr from Cosmic Insight. Overall every of these rune pages is good in a way, so it's kind of personal preference

Skill Sequence

Master Yi's Skill Sequence is basically the same across every build you may play:
  • Highlander will be maxed first as it's your ultimate ability and allows you to make plays
  • Alpha Strike will be maxed second as this skill enables your outplay potential and maxing this will lower it's basic cooldown allowing you to dodge cc/skillshots/some targeted damage more often
  • Wuju Style will be your third skill to max as it's true damage adds up nicely with Conqueror and the rest of the build
  • Meditate will be maxed last as this skill is only useful to autoreset or tanking some damage which eventually you will be able to dodge with Alpha Strike anyways so that's not a big deal

Spells

The summoners I am running most of my games are Flash and Smite.

Simple yi tips

Yi has a pretty straight forward kit but if you're new to him you probably make some simple to fix mistakes:
  • Don't use your Alpha Strike straight to gap close to someone if you have Highlander up. You can keep Alpha Strike to chase people who Flash away or try to get away from you.
  • Use your Wuju Style just as soon as you start autoattacking someone. Don't use that before as you would waste some seconds of free true damage and use it after casting Alpha Strike as you may lose 1 or 2 seconds of it while you bounce between targets

Jungle Paths

My Standard Jungle Path is Red Brambleback -> Rift Scuttler (On the opposite side of the map) -> Blue Sentinel -> Gromp -> Wolves -> Raptors -> Scryer's Bloom* (Hit this to get sight on the Rift Scuttler you didn't take and if it's alive try to get that) -> Krug -> Recall and restart.

After the first clear you should be around level 4/5 depending on what camps you managed to clear.

*Scryer's bloom is the plant that grants you vision after you attack it

Ganking

Ganking as Master Yi is pretty simple I generally ask myself these questions:
  • Is my ultimate up?
  • Is/are the enemy laner/laners low on hp?
  • Do I have red buff?
  • Does the enemy laner have a lot of mobility?
  • Does my laner have some CC to make the gank successful?
You should answer those questions in order to have a higher chance of success in ganking as that helps you understand your champion's weaknesses and strengths and play accordingly. For example: You don't want to gank a lane you're most likely not going to get at least one kill into instead of farming, this is valid especially pre level 6

Splitpushing

Splitpushing with this yi build is really effective as your Guinsoo's Rageblade + Conqueror make you unstoppable and force the enemy team to send more than one person to try doing so while the rest of your team is free to play around the rest of the map by pushing other lanes. While doing so always check the minimap to avoid getting flanked and then killed as that may give away free objectives such as Baron Nashor during your respawn time. Also if you want to go aggressive with Highlander you have to make sure Conqueror and Guinsoo's Rageblade are fully stacked before going in as that will make you much stronger.

Vision and Objectives

As a jungler it's your job to keep vision of objectives either through Stealth Ward
or Control Ward. Never forget this as objectives win or lose games. Also remember that after your 2nd back or approximately around it you can solo drake (always buy a Control Ward to clear vision before doing so as you don't want to get killed in the process and get your drake stolen, also always keep an eye on the map to see if botlane or midlane is moving towards you, in that case abort the operation and try to get them together with your bot/mid depending on who's moving). With the Domination tree after fully stacking Ravenous Hunter and having purchased Blade of the Ruined King you can try soloing Baron Nashor pretty easily as you'll have a lot of sustain (always remember to buy and place a Control Ward to clear vision before doing so)
