Your goal is simple. you just need to get to the point you are acually tanky. wich is at 3 items. That means you have to will needs a lot of gold. unfortunatly you will almost never have the damage to kill anyone by yourself. That means you will need to farm to get gold or help kill someone.
how to achieve it in top lane
With your goal in mind, it is time that you use W to clear waves and Q E to prevent all ins from the enemy. If you have no wave to clear and tower plates isn't a good option it is time for you to steal crugs if able. If your jungle ever ganks you use Q to ingage, duh.
