Hey! I am ori main, obviously an
Orianna main. My 2nd main is
Garen. I think
Garen is a great Champion to learn, as he is playable in most Roles and pretty easy to pick up. Since his Mini-Rework he's also Meta for pretty much the first time. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about him!

I've met quite a few people who didn't know about the new
Garen Scaling with Attack Speed and accused me of trolling their games. I've also witnessed the same thing happen to other
Garens in my games. I wanna clear this up: Eversince Patch 9.20
Garen's amount of spins per E
Judgment scales with Attack Speed. And it does incredibly well.

Eversince his Mini-Rework
Garen's E
Judgment can proc
Conqueror. That means that each Spin functions as an auto attack, acquiring 1 Stack of
Conqueror. This made
Garen significintly stronger than before.
Triumph is obvious, you take it because it delivers incredibly strong sustain in Teamfights.
Legend: Tenacity is very strong on
Garen, because the only thing that counters him is CC which keeps him at a distance. Tenacity removes a large portion of that CC. Lastly
Coup de Grace because it makes your R Execute even stronger.

Now it depends on your matchup. The standard 2nd tree is
Bone Plating and
Overgrowth (or
Demolish for splitpushing). Even though it's especially strong against poke and ranged Champions, it's also generally a good allrounder. However, I personally like to take
Cheap Shot and
Ravenous Hunter whenever my matchup allows it (melee).
Cheap Shot deals bonus true damage against targets you hit with your Silence
Decisive Strike, which means it impowers your Q
Decisive Strike E
Judgment combo.
Ravenous Hunter stacks healing from Ability Damage, which means that especially your E will heal you for a good amount when fullstacked.

These are very briefly summarized Skill explanations I came up with. If you want to know more about the ability, hover over it with your mouse and read the official spell description!

First of all, let's explain
Garen's Standard Combo:

First of all, you use Q
Decisive Strike to gain Movement Speed to gapclose towards your enemy. This also triggers
Sheen to empower your next Auto Attack. Next up, you use your E
Judgment to shred your silenced enemy to pieces. The silence prevents him from flashing, dashing or escaping otherwise for 1.5 seconds. When he's low enough, use your R
Demacian Justice on him. When ahead enough, you can manage to shred him low enough for R
Demacian Justice to be lethal within the 1.5 second silence - that means he has 0 counterplay after you hit your Q. Even if he flashes right after the 1.5 seconds are over, as long as you pressed R before or even in the same momen, he'll still be executed.

What when you don't have R
Demacian Justice ready? No worries:

This can be used for trading during early game, but during lategame it should be lethal, even without the 2nd Q
Decisive Strike. Once again, you proc
Sheen on both of your Q
Decisive Strike-Auto Attacks. Besides of that all of your abalities have the Chance to crit. Great damage output.

There are really good Synergies between
Garen and some Champions.

First of all,
Garen works amazing with any kind of Support who can buff, heal or shield him (especially in the botlane). The best ones are probably
Yuumi because she offers CC, healing and Mobility for
Garen and
Lulu, mainly because her R
Wild Growth because it works very well on Bruisers, but also because of her W
Whimsy which grants the target ally bonus Attack Speed. Other honorable mentions which fit into this category are
Soraka,
Nami and
Janna.

Then there are (mostly tanky) Supports who offer
Garen the CC his Kit is missing.
Garen's only real weakness is, that he lacks Gapclose AND CC (Most champs have either one or the other, some have both), while his damage Output and Frontline Abalities are insane. Now pair that with a tanky CC machine like
Taric, and the 2 are unbeatable. Other honorable mentions are
Nautilus,
Blitzcrank,
Pyke,
Morgana,
Lux and
Rakan.

Against Melee Champions, you can pretty much go ham. Although it recently got nerfed,
Garen's base damage on E
Judgment is still enough to pick up an early kill or two using your
Ignite. Wait for lvl 2 though, you will need your Q
Decisive Strike-E
Judgment- Combo.

Against Ranged Champions, or generally Champs with annoying CC or dashes it's a different story. You'll have to play safe and farm well before your first back. Trying to engage early is useless when your enemy
Gnar just hops back or
Xerath just throws an E
Shocking Orb at you. After your first or second back, owning the Items
Berserker's Greaves and
Phage you should be able to just
Flash-Q
Decisive Strike-
Ignite-E
Judgment-R
Demacian Justice onto your enemy (make sure to land your
Ignite before your Q
Decisive Strike-Auto Attack hits for maximum damage). If you're heaving trouble, you can always ask your Jungler to help you.
Xerath can't stun 2 people at once! The same goes for
Azir,
Syndra,
Fizz,
Teemo,
Orianna,
Lux, etc.
