Introduction

Hey, my name is My Broken Wings and I play in the EUW server, I am currently Gold ELO. Riven was the one who carried me to Gold and I won many a game due to her kit. Starting in Bronze in mid season 3 I immediatly liked her kit when one of my friends told me to pick her up. Since that moment I never looked back. I ended the season in Silver 5 but this was in Pre-season so I didn't get it noted. I started Bronze 4 this season and carried myself to Gold 5 thanks to Riven's Kit.

Riven is a high mobility burst top laner, who can 100 to 0 squishy champions. She is very good at roaming around the map and applying alot of map pressure. She is a very high skillcap chamipion meaning if you master her you can be amazing at her. I believe Riven is a great pick for ranked as she can escape from ganks, splitpush, kill enemys, peel for your adc and snowball very easily.

Spell Introduction

= Riven's abilities charge her blade for 5 seconds, causing her to do 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 % of her attack damage as bonus physical damage on her next basic attack. Riven can store up to 3 charges, and can only expend one at a time.

= ACTIVE: Riven steps forward and lashes out in a series of powerful slashes, dealing physical damage to all enemies within 112.5-range. Broken Wings can be cast two additional times within 4 seconds, with the timer resetting after each. All three strikes deal the same damage, with the third damaging enemies within 150-range and knocking them up. Riven will target the unit under your cursor; if no targets are present, Riven will simply strike the direction she is currently facing.

= ACTIVE: Riven deals physical damage to all enemies within range and stuns them for 0.75 seconds.

= ACTIVE: Riven dashes towards the cursor and gains a shield that absorbs incoming damage for 1.5 seconds.

= ACTIVE: For 15 seconds Riven's sword is reformed, gaining 20% of her total AD as bonus attack damage and 75 bonus attack range (200 total range).
Broken Wings's 1st and 3rd area of effect radius increase to 162.5 and 200 respectively and Ki Burst.png Ki Burst's area of effect radius increases to 135.
For Blade of the Exile's duration, Riven can use Wind Slash once.

= ACTIVE: Riven unleashes a 2200-speed wave of energy in a cone, dealing physical damage to all enemies hit.
The damage is increased by 2.67% for every 1% of an enemy's missing health, capping at 200% bonus damage (300% total damage) against enemies with 75% or more missing health.

Skills Info
Riven's Passive, Runic Blade, stacks up to 3 times, and each auto attack spends on of these points, this means you should use 1 auto attack after each ability to maximize the effectiveness of this passive.

Riven's Q, Broken Wings, is not only the place where I got my name from, it's also a triple dash ability in which the 3rd strike can jump over small walls. Remember to auto after each strike if possible.

Riven's W, Ki Burst, is an AOE point blank stun, however this has a small charge time, this means if you're moving and you cast it you will stop in your tracks to cast it, and then carry on moving.

Riven's E, Valor, is a small dash which can't go over walls, however if you stand right next to the edge of Jarvan IV's Cataclysm she can get out of it. Other walls such as Anivias Crystallize is yet for my testing, as is Trundle's Pillar of Ice. This also gives a large shield which scales off your AD.

Riven's R, has 2 components, Blade of the Exile and Wind Slash. The 1st part. Blade of the Exile gives you extra range on your 1st and 3rd strike of your Broken Wings. It also increases your attack range by 75. However the main part is that her sword reforges itself and she gains 20% of her current AD, basically her AD*1.2. The 2nd part, Wind Slash, Strikes her enemy with a cone of Wind which does damage based on how much health the enemy is missing. This is capped at 300% of the original damage against enemies at 25% health.

The Exact numbers are as follow as from lolwiki from the 5.8.2014:

[[Blade of the Exile COOLDOWN: 110 / 80 / 50
ACTIVE: For 15 seconds Riven's sword is reformed, gaining 20% of her total AD as bonus attack damage and 75 bonus attack range (200 total range).
Broken Wings' 1st and 3rd area of effect radius increase to 162.5 and 200 respectively and Ki Burst's area of effect radius increases to 135.
For Blade of the Exile's duration, Riven can use Wind Slash once.
Wind Slash RANGE: 900
ACTIVE: Riven unleashes a 2200-speed wave of energy in a cone, dealing physical damage to all enemies hit.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 80 / 120 / 160 (+ 60% bonus AD)
The damage is increased by 2.67% for every 1% of an enemy's missing health, capping at 200% bonus damage (300% total damage) against enemies with 75% or more missing health.
MAXIMUM PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 240 / 360 / 480 (+ 180% bonus AD)

Here is a map of most of the the walls Riven can jump over with the 3rd strike of her Broken Wings

Summoner Spells

= I recommend Flash on Riven, because it is always good to have an escape or quick engage.
While most jungler and toplaner will have Flash as well, it is a lot easier to escape, while you have loads of mobility with Broken Wings and Valor, as stated before. This also allows you to gapclose much faster, and have the extra mobility over your enemys.

= This should be your second Summoner Spell in most cases.
The explanation is quite simple: Damage. You want to burst your enemy down and additional damage helps you a lot.
Tip: If you know you can kill your enemy, use Ignite early. It will grant you more damage from Wind Slash, because it deals more damage if the enemy has lower health. That means you get more damage.

= In the current Metagame Teleport is standard for nearly every toplaner. Because it's cooldown went down to 200 seconds, if you Teleport to a turret it is very efficent in early game as well know. It helps you to get early into base and buy items frequently, without losing out on EXP or Gold. In the lategame it allows you to splitpush, another strength of Riven. I guess it is your decision wether you stay with Ignite or not in Solo Q.

= I do not find useful, unless they have Champions with low/no CC ( Shyvana, Evelynn) this is also a very good summoner spell as it almost halves damage done by the enemy for the duration, slowing them, allowing you to destroy them in 1v1's aswell as it reducing armour and magic resist.

Runes

Runes

Precision
Press the Attack
Electrocute
Lethal Tempo
Predator

x9 = The attack damage given from this gives a high base od AD at level 1, it increases the scaling on her spells and passive. This is by far the best choice for marks.

x5 = This is good in early trades against AD champs such as Rengar. This reduces the damage of early trades sigificantly, especially against high auto attack champions.

x4 = This gives you some extra health in the late game where you are pretty squishy, 95.76 to be exact.

x3 = In early fights against AP toplaners such as Vladimir and Kennen, this is very good as it can let you take some of the harass at a small cost. This also helps in early game against ganks from champs who do magic damage such as Elise.

x6 = I have chosen these runes because I find they very useful early - mid game. With an early The Brutalizer you will have a total of 18.75 CDR, meaning spam, spam, spam. You will have your abilities up more often including your Blade of the Exile.

greater quintessence of armor penetrationx1 = The reason why I take this over a 3rd AD quint is because some very tanky champs come up in toplane who start with 40 armor which is really annoying such as Shen and Garen. This goes through some of their armor for greater damage although it doesn't better the scaling on your spells and passive.

x2 = Extra scaling, harder auto attacksv, better damage from the active on Ravenous Hydra. Nothing disagreeable, especially is ALL of Riven's scalings are AD.

Masteries

21 Offense

= This gives you 2% extra damage at the cost of taking 1% more, however it's a better trade-off as you are melee, plus your sword has 2 edges, why wouldn't you want it?

(3/4) = 3.75% Cooldown reduction isn't much but it's better than fury because you can only get 5% attack speed which is really poor, you also need these points.

= This helps with last hitting. The reason why you take this is so that you only have to invest 3 points into the 2nd tier so you can go straight to the 4th.

= Brute force gives you a free Long Sword at level 18 which is decent. This will help all your spells and passive scale better.

= Spell weaving is good because each time you use a spell your next autoattack does more damage, your passive, Runic Blade does the exact same thing, this is what you call perfect synergy between mastery and kit, this is the kind of mastery you need.

= +4 AD gold efficiency wise is worth 144 gold, this just helps with last hitting and early game scalings, however it is bonus AD so it is amplified by Warlord .

= We were talking about perfect synergy before, weren't we? Well then get a load of this mastery. This synergises with your ult so well, Wind Slash. More damage the lower the enemy is. This means damage from all your other spells and autos is amplified too.

= Same story as Spell Weaving really, you damage them with your autos and they take more damage from your spells, the reason why this is so good n riven is because you can put all 3 stacks on them with your Broken Wings meaning it is ready for you to ult them in the full combo after.

Increases your bonus AD by 5%. This may not seems like alot but you will build around 300-400 bonues AD, which is then amplified to 315 or 420, respectivly. A beautiful mastery and a must take for any Riven player.

= Riven does alot of physical damage and this mastery works with your build, very armor penetrating. The magic penetration is sort of wasted but no one really gets this mastery benefitting perfectly from both aspects.

= MONSTER mastery here, all your damage from all sources, spells, autos, items amplified by 3%. Even the passive and active on Blade of the Ruined King would be amplified, as an example. This is why we went so deep into the offense tree.

9 Defense

= Each auto attack is reduced by 2 points in damage, this is after resistance calculation so it will always be 2. This works in conjunction with Doran's Shield.

= This isn't much but to Riven's low inbuilt sustain this is pretty good to keep you in lane a bit longer.

= All damage is decreased by 2, This means autos are already reduced by 4 after resistance calculation. Then all the enemy spells and item actives are are reduced by 2.

= 36 extra health is nothing to laugh at pre 6 levels, this could save your life but late game this isn't much use, though it is amplified by Juggernaut

= Juggernaut will help make you that little bit tankier, youe 2k health endgame will be turned into 2060. Not that good but then again it's better than Oppression or 1 point in Hardiness or Resistance

Items

= I think this item is great on Riven because, Riven does not have a energy or mana bar. This means she is free of sustaining herself from spam. With Ionian Boots of Lucidity you can have 15% CDR. This allow's you to combo more often, have more ablities up more often, and have your ult up more often. Allow you to kill champions more often.

= This item does fairly well with Riven's kit, if you are abusing your passive and Broken Wings you should get the armour reduction stacks very fast. This shreds armour for your whole team, allowing not only you to burst someone down, but someone else to burst someone down. Also with the health that comes with Black Cleaver and the bonus damage, this is a great buy.

= This item is great for wave clear and burst, with Riven's great wave clear already this only compliments it. Allowing her to push waves fast and get tower's down fast. Also allowing you to burst people extremely fast. Ravenous Hydra also gives good health regen allowing you to stay inlane and in the fight for longer.

= This item should be bought everygame, the armour penetration is great for killing everyone on the enemy team from takes to squishy's. Comb'd with you ult you can get people's HP low very fast. For 2300 Last Whisper is a great item.

= This item is great against a high AP comp or just 1 bursty AP carry on the enemy team. If you are going to get this item build the Hexdrinker early and finish off the Maw later into the game. The passive on Hexdrinker is a life saver. If you are versing an AP lane opponent this is also a great item.

= Randuin's Omen is basically anti-adc, and the person in most teamfights that your going to kill or peel for is an ADC. This item is great for peeling [Protecting your adc] with its active. But can also be used to kill the enemy's ADC with its amazing armour and health. + Amazing Passive.

= This item is viable against enemy's with high mobility, however I do not prefer it to Black Cleaver but this item is great for chasing and escaping, also if the enemy has an high attackspeed assasin you could probably keep the their attackspeed with this item. If you really need more armour pen, get this item over a Maw of Malmortius or Randuin's Omen. The item is very cheap for the passive and armour pen.

= Another key item for Riven. 80 Attack Damage and 20% lifesteal with a shield afterwards. It's great as first big item and increases Riven's dmg by a big amount. Furthermore, it offer a lot of sustain, so you can stay in lane for a long time, even without a Health Potion.
Buy the Vampiric Scepter simpy when you feel, that you need it. It mostly belongs on matchups, for example vs a Renekton you need it early.

= The spell shield is really useful for high poke teams, it's also pretty good if you have to get a bit tankier, I like to get this item against Teemo as it ruins alot of his lane presence, however the rest of the time, my magic resist choice is Maw of Malmortius

Ranked Play

In ranked you should focus on snowballing your lane, if your having a matchup against a hard counter like Garen then you could try taking Teleport. You would take Teleport to roam mid and see if you can get some kills, or even roam bot and get some kills. You can rather teleport to a ward or goto the lane and then get a kill for yourself or your teammate and Teleport back to your tower. However if you have snowballed your lane, you could keep yourself snowballed by warding the river with your gold and keep applying pressure, if they are at half health or even 3/4 health that is enough to all in them.

If you have Ignite you should be in a lane where you could possible get kills, or you just needed it to half their healing. If you are in the killing lane then constantly harass them for every farm. Trade them for every farm. Eventually you will get to a point where they are low enough to all in. Make sure its warded and auto between abilities. Get that ball rolling :D.

Also if you have won lane and its pushed, when you recall don't go back to your lane goto the enemy's jungle and try to find a good place to gank an enemy or just kill the jungler, with the latest patch you have timers on enemys buff's if you see them die, Buy a ward a keep it warded. This means you can contest for every buff and keep applying map pressure, this may also lead into you getting some kills on their jungler and even a could buff's.
