abilities

Passive: The Darkin Scythe

Kayn wields an ancient, sentient weapon, that battles with him for control. Each instance of damage (excluding damage over time) and takedowns Kayn deals against champions causes them to drop orbs, red by melee champions and blue by Ranged champions, that are automatically collected upon leaving combat, filling their respective bars by 2.5 − 7 (based on minutes) points per orb.
If Kayn is damaged by an enemy champion, he will instantly collect all dropped orbs opposite to the attacker's range type and fill the corresponding bar of his attacker's range type.

If out of combat, and once one of the bars is full, which scales down with game time, Kayn will either be overwhelmed by Rhaast or expel him to become the Shadow Assassin, based if the filled bar is red or blue, respectively. Once primed, the other option becomes available after 4 minutes.

The transformation can only be performed by interacting with their portrait while on the summoning platform, permanently changing their abilities and granting them Homeguard.

The Darkin Scythe:
SHADOW ASSASSIN: Kayn deals 12% − 44% (based on level) of post-mitigation damage dealt against enemy champions as bonus magic damage, lasting for 3 seconds upon entering in combat with an enemy champion, refreshing after 8 seconds out of combat with them or by using Umbral Trespass.

The Darkin Scythe
RHAAST: Rhaast heals for 34.5% − 43% (based on level) of the post-mitigation Attack damage physical damage that he deals with spells against enemy champions

Q: Reaping Slash

Kayn dashes forward, dealing physical damage to all enemies he passes through before flourishing his scythe, dealing the same damage again to surrounding enemies.

The dash's speed scales with Kayn's total movement speed.

RHAAST: Both instances of damage are modified to 50% AD (+ 5% (+ 4% per 100 bonus AD) of target's maximum health) physical damage, capped against monsters.

PHYSICAL DAMAGE:
60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 (+ 65% bonus AD)

Kayn heals himself upon moving through terrain for the first time and, if he's not in combat with enemy champions, duration is increased. While inside terrain, Kayn's vision pierces all obstructions although he cannot see into brush.

Entering combat with a champion after the effect is enhanced reduces the remaining duration to 1.5 seconds. The effect also cannot remain active out of terrain for longer than 1.5 seconds.

my thoughts on the abilities

passive: this is kayn's biggest strength and his greatest weakness

this passive grants him extreme flexibility at the cost of a very poor early game

he basically has no passive early game, which is bad for any champion. you have to get all the orbs before you can get a passive.

note that if you get the wrong form you have to wait four minutes before you can choose the other, so try to get the right form

Q:
this ability is your bread and butter, it provides damage and mobility and procs sudden impact

i take 2 points in this ability early when playing rhaast but max it first when playing shadow assassin

putting points into this ability is awful when you play rhaast as it does almost nothing, but as shadow assasin this get very good

W:
this give you long range poke that is useful in getting orbs
when you hit darkin form it gives you hard CC which triggers aftershock
in shadow assassin it gives you the bulk of your damage and a stronger slow

E:
this gives you unparalleled mobility, allowing you to slip in and out of walls
a good path is to loop through the river before E'ing through the wall to surprise them
i put 1 point in this early as it is purely a 1-point weapon

Ultimate:
this is a very terrifying ultimate, it gives 2.5 seconds of untargetability which is very useful for dodging incoming damage, however the end will not be impactfull until you transform

In Rhaast form it gives yo a massive heal, effectively giving you another health bar

in Shadow assassin it refreshes you passive, giving you another round of burst o kill a squishy

i level this ability whenever i can like 90% of the ultimate's in the game

runes for shadow assassin

Predator grants a large amount of MS, allowing you to get to your targets with ease. It also synergies well with the other runes on this list

Sudden Impact once again grants free lethality due to the abundance of dashes in kayns kit

Eyeball Collection grants AD. you cannot have enough AD on kayn

Relentless Hunter more movement speed. the reason for all this movement speed will become apparent in a moment

Celerity this is what all the movement speed was for. you will get a ton of extra MS from this. the combo is Predator ==> Ghost ==> Shadow Step ==> Youmuu's Ghostblade

Nimbus Cloak more MS for celerity

Runes for rhaast

i will start with the runes for Rhaast

Aftershock while an excellent late game rune is unusable until you hit your darkin form
if you don't feel comfortable without a keystone in the early game Grasp of the Undying can sacrifice some late game power fro some early game healing.

Bone Plating is good for the extended teamfights where Rhaast shines

Conditioning Gives you some extra armor and MR that adds up in the late game.

Revitalize is an excellent rune for Rhaast because it boosts the healing he receives from his passive and Umbral Trespass

Sudden Impact triggers very often due to Reaping Slash being a dash so it is essentially free stats

Ravenous Hunter gives you more healing which is very nice on Rhaast

Items for shadow assassin

Doran's Blade is really just your generic starting item as is Health Potion

the core items for shadow assassin are the 3 Serrated Dirk items, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Duskblade of Draktharr, and Edge of Night
use Youmuu's Ghostblade to get more ad from celerity and Edge of Night for surviving the retaliation from your assassination attempts

Mortal Reminder is if you are going against an armor heavy team

ALWAYS BUY BOOTS- you will need them to make full use of Celerity and Predator
buy Boots early and buy Boots of Swiftness if you are getting slowed when you try and assassinate

buy Manamune if you are having mana problems as it will sole that without giving up much AD

Mercurial Scimitar is if you are being CC'd too much and are instadying

Ninja Tabi is the more defensive boots option

Maw of Malmortius is just if you are getting killed by the midlaners you are trying to assassinate, it has not much use otherwise

items for Rhaast

once again Doran's Shield and Health Potion are generic starting items

your 3 core items, Black Cleaver, Spirit Visage, and Death's Dance all are indispensable when it comes to rhaast
Black Cleaver grants you HP and AD both of which Rhaast cannot deny
Spirit Visage increases the power of your passive
Death's Dance grants you EVEN MORE healing

Bloodthirster is very useful with the amount of healing in Rhaasts kit, your ultimate will almost always grants you its shield

Ravenous Hydra Grants you the cleave effect and some more lifesteal with a very nice added affect for use during teamfights

Blade of the Ruined King grats you more percent max health damage on you basic attacks

Guardian Angel grants you basically a second chance at impacting a teamfight, increasing your unkillability to even higher levels

Sterak's Gage grants you more AD and a teamfight shield

Frozen Heart grats you armor and mana (note that it gives you 20% CDR which if you have the core items will be useless so you can get Frozen Mallet instead)

Pro's / con's of top kayn

PRO's:
you can predict which form you are going to get
CC as rhaast
instaburst as SA
you can walk through walls
you ult is like a fizz E on steroids
multiple playstyles in one champion
flexible
high mobility

CON's:
low range
venerable to CC
doesn't do well when peeled

A note about pyke

pyke is a weird champion to lane against as kayn, he has abysmal health meaning as SA you should stomp him, but he's melee, meaning that attacking him powers up rhaast. the solution is to try not fight him. tell your jungler not to gank and wait until either 15 minutes or you bar is almost full with red orbs. then go to mid lane and attack the midlaner. try to supprise them with your E. if your bar is still not full go gank bot lane. along the way to both bot and min lanes, take jungle camps you you don't fall behind in gold(raptors are pretty quick). by this point your bar should be full of blue orbs. if not, recall and repeat. if they have melee a midlaner don't gank that lane. also avoid damaging the support if they are melee. then return to the lane and stomp the pyke
Back to Top

Summary

kayn is a very good top laner that is often ignored in this lane in exchange for the jungle
